Well, yeah the CG stuff is glaring. I just meant what some other people pointed out about the non-CG parts of the movie.

Few talented animators are involved in the film and for the cuts they do work on they are few in number or not that animator's best work. Oonishi Ryou was only able to contribute to the cuts during the Super Saiyan God ritual, so he doesn't provide any key animation for the action. Shida Naotoshi's cuts are the visual highlight of the film. I think Hosoda Masahiro being an average-level director has a lot to do with this. He doesn't seem to have many contacts amongst freelancers and the film's budget is pretty small as it is (probably no more than a million US dollars), so with less money to spend on drawings the battles aren't particularly high-quality. Episodes of Naruto Shippuuden have more talent and better allocation of resources than Battle of Gods does.ShadowDude112 wrote:So, just a question, since I'm not an animation buff. Some people on the forum have said the animation isn't fluid, or some of the animators cuts weren't very good. I just want to know what they mean and how to look out for those. Cause that's something you have to know a lot about. Does that make sense? I feel it does, but I can try and reword it for clarification if I need to.
Toei Animation rushing the film while in the middle of production on a half dozen other projects doesn't help, either. If Shida, Hamano Yuu'ichi and the other few talented animators had the time to do themselves justice the movie would've been a lot better, I think. The Toriko movie that came out a few months later has a higher quantity of high-quality cuts from Hamano and Oonishi Ryou.

Got any examples? I've never heard any complaints about the normal animation.
Nevermind. Someone already posted some!
Can't say I really agree though. Really bad animation sticks out like a sore thumb to me and there was very little that offended me in Battle of Gods.

A lot of it is 'bad' in that for all the money spent the film doesn't have many particularly interesting cuts, whether we're talking about layouts and storyboarding or other visual quirks. An episode of Nisekoi is a hell of a lot more fun to look at than most of this movie, which I think is a shame given the superb script and acting.AjayLikesGaming wrote:Got any examples? Oh yeah, I definitely agree it's not anywhere near the visual feast I expected from a modern Dragon Ball film; it's definitely not bad looking though. Sorry, I misunderstood what you were getting at. My bad!

Was this C.G.I? I know the awful CGI in Goku vs Beerus that was horrible. But what about this scene ?

It's just an inbetween frame. In motion, you could never even tell.TheGmGoken wrote:AjayLikesGaming wrote:Got any examples? I've never heard any complaints about the normal animation.

And for the record, none of the characters were rendered in CG, only the backgrounds. In those instances, everything in the foreground was drawn in 2D and placed over CG backgrounds. The only instance I'm aware of where the characters were rendered in CG was when Goku and Beerus rush at each other after ending up in a barren rocky area (around the 64 minute mark).KaiserNeko wrote:It's just an inbetween frame. The other day I was re-watching this AMV for the Bleach movies and was reminded of just how big of a let-down the animation for this movie was. The storyboarding, high number of talented animators, and large quantity of action cuts in each film really does put Battle of Gods to shame.

Wow. O_o A lot of that animation is very impressive. It really is a shame that Toei wouldn't put that kind of work and talent on Dragon Ball nowadays. : /JulieYBM wrote:The other day I was re-watching this AMV for the Bleach movies and was reminded of just how big of a let-down the animation for this movie was. To be fair, I really don't think Bulma's bingo party or Pilaf's frivolous antics called for the most captivating of animation and storyboarding from Toei. Remember the majority of the movie just tries to have a fun time with the characters we know.JulieYBM wrote:The other day I was re-watching this AMV for the Bleach movies and was reminded of just how big of a let-down the animation for this movie was. You don't need a lot of action to justify good animation, layouts and storyboarding. Part of dramatized storytelling like film is communicating things beyond merely the use of dialogue or acting. Even then, the those first two action scenes are sorely lacking in interesting animation. That's on them.xXInfinite026Xx wrote:To be fair, I really don't think Bulma's bingo party or Pilaf's frivolous antics called for the most captivating of animation and storyboarding from Toei. Well since today's theme seems to be knock on BoG animation. I think I'll leave this here.
Really though, I agree that we should expect the best from the animation group, but IMHO it wasn't that bad at all.
Besides, animation quality means close to nothing when evaluating a films overall quality.
The bleach films are extremely sub par but they have beautiful animation.

Id much rather prefer this -
Its not just recycled punching and kicking for 3-4 seconds.

So, I'm noticing that almost every theater that has the movie listed shows it's running time at about 85-90 minutes. I'm under the impression that they are NOT using the extended edition for theaters.

You may be right and if i remember correctly wasn't the extended movie about 105 minutes as opposed to the 85 minute theatrical run? We know that they recorded the extended already however this could mean they save it for blu-ray/dvd home release and (like you suspected) post the shorter theater version in theaters.KaiserNeko wrote:So, I'm noticing that almost every theater that has the movie listed shows it's running time at about 85-90 minutes. Yeah, when it comes to animation quality, Jigoku-Hen really brought it's A game.JulieYBM wrote:The other day I was re-watching this AMV for the Bleach movies and was reminded of just how big of a let-down the animation for this movie was. Ooh! Based on that, it says there's a showing in Solon. Which is about 10-15 minutes from where I live. If I have the money for it, definitely going to go.

Closest one for me is either Altoona, PA or Morgantown, WV. A little over an hour each way. I think I'll request a day off work and maybe make a day of it with the fiancé and daughter. I don't know when I'll get another chance to watch DBZ in theaters, and I'm not gonna let this slip away.

Wow, I was not expecting so many Georgia showings. I wasn't expecting this many showings period. Very, very impressive, FUNi.
Still trying to decide if I want to see this or not. Nothing to do with the dub or anything; my last few theater experiences just haven't been too fun. I love seeing movies with crowds of other people, but at the same time... I *hate* seeing movies with crowds of other people. Maybe I can get lucky and have the whole theater to myself like I did with Frozen and Muppets Most Wanted.
