Travis Touchdown wrote:People are always so hard on Gohan's character because of how much Gohan whined and moaned and cried. But he was 4-5 when he did most of his crying, and 11 when he cired again. Vegeta was a grown adult when he did all of his immature bawling and at the very least, neither Gohan, Goku, or even his son, Trunks, ever threw a tissy fit like he did over a stronger opponent.
Vegeta is never declared a worthy successor to Goku and the hero of Earth for the battle(s) where he breaks down in tears. That's the difference.

Also, I like Vegeta's evil-good transition, as it's far more complex than anyone else's.

Remember Tien's? "RAR me evil!" "You should be good!" "Really? Hm... ok, I'll be good!"

Piccolo was already magically less evil than King Piccolo before he met Gohan (Raditz went to the afterlife, remember?), and he gets huge personality changes from his two fusions.

In fact, I'm going to say that's the main reason I like Vegeta - he doesn't get anything for free, but he turns out to be a decent person, a good father, and a powerful warrior with no freebies.

I like Vegeta for his brilliance that he showed in the Freeza arc. Personally I think he made it by himself until Goku showed back up.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

I think everyone hit on the main reasons why I like the Vegeta character especially my old buddy Rocketman’s statements. Yet, to me the one thing that I think everyone missed was that Vegeta has the ability to fight the wishes of his own creator(s). As Rocketman pointed, it is apparent that Toei and Toriyama dislike Vegeta. Toriyama admitted this himself in Daizenshuu #2. Years ago on this forum when I was just a lurker it was unanimous that Vegeta was an asshole, dick, jerk etc. Son Gohan and Kakarrot was the gods of Dragonball and that no one had better say a bad word about them. Now years later we have at least two pages of people stating that they liked the character in addition to actually presenting justified criticism of the “stars” of the show. Even Toriyama has used Vegeta in Neko Majin Z and that chapter in that manga with the dirty cop on Namek. I think that this is something special about Vegeta that really gets over looked.
The Saiyans are very much like the Klingons and Jem'Hadar.

I liked Bejiita-sama due to his move-set in the games....

The Super Saiyan Buster is the best move because it causes your opponent to explode from the inside out! 8)

I think the reason why some of us like Vegeta and why some of us hate him is because he sometimes reminds us of ourselves.

Each one of us had their moment of frustration, where we tend to close everyone out and act unrationally, and then there are those moments of pride and glory. sometimes you try really hard but then your past mistkes catch up wit you, and then you start to cry and after that just get up and try again.Sometimes it turns out alright in the end and sometimes there's just no turning back but you have to just stand again. It's not always easy to do that- for some, at least, and to some others it comes naturally.

I admire Vegeta's determination and will- you've got to give him that at least.

When I first introduced DBZ to people they seem to flock towards Vegeta for the simple fact he's a badass, one of my friends even said that Vegeta reminded him of Batman (the whole anti hero thing) even my wife likes him, as she put it "he's a sexy bad boy who don't follow the rules".

The difference between him and me is:
1) I take failure and learn from it. Vegeta fights alone several times 'cuz "he is the strongest, LAWL!"
2) It something doesn't work, I find a new way. Vegeta is always a step behind Goku because of that he doesn't think about new ways to train. He keeps with the gravitation room all the time and doesn't think of a new transformation.
3) I let go of my pride once in a while if something has to be done. Vegeta let's Cell absorb Android 18, goes to fight the Androids alone, and decides to fight Buu for himself. All for his pride.

Well, simply, Vegeta is a character that doesn't learn from his mistakes until it's too late.
No more time for Daizex. Goodbye folks!

Vegeta is not only my favorite Dragonball character, but also my favorite anime character of all time. I tend to gravitate towards the villains/badasses of the shows I watch, so it's no surprise that Vegeta became an instant favorite of mine. When I first started watching DBZ sometime in 1997, the first episodes I saw were when he was running around on Namek being a dick to Freeza's minions. Though it's hard to remember the exact first episode I saw, based on how the image stuck instantly in my head, I would have to say it was probably the episode where he's bullying Dodoria. I was like, damn, this short guy's making a total bitch of this pink blob who's, like, twice his size! All while wearing this badass smirk. I was instantly in love  When Cartoon Network re-aired the beginning of DBZ (in early 1999?), I finally got to see how Vegeta's story had started (while watching the Namek episodes, I had no idea why he always used Kakarrot instead of Gokuu), and the love only deepened. I just admired the tenacity he showed during his fight against the Earthlings, how even with all the shit being hurled at him, he just kept going.

Later, when I found out about his relationship with Bulma, it added another layer of interest in his character (can't stop that shipping instinct  ). It was like, bam, out of nowhere, he suddenly had a family. However, it's not like his character underwent an instant transformation into a family man, which was appropriate. It would have been weird for a guy to him to suddenly be all like, "I love Bulma, and I love our son! Forget my training, let's all go out for a family picnic!" (a lot of fanfics seem to go with the fantasy that Trunks was actually planned, though  ). His development happens in stages, and I think a big contributor to it was when future Trunks died in front of him. Vegeta's had his share of rage-filled freakouts over the course of the show, but that was the first one that was fueled by something that happened to another person, rather than himself. I honestly wonder if he would have gotten back together with Bulma again and started being a father to baby Trunks if he'd never been forced to realize his emotions like that. I know a lot of people complain about Vegeta's asshattery during the Cell saga, but it doesn't really bother me, honestly. He still had some great moments and great fights during that time period, so he's forgiven for a little excessive whining.

During the Boo saga, we get to see the result of the previous buildup of character development. Though he regressed when he let Babidi possess him (and gave the most badass evil grin ever  ), in the end, he sacrificed everything in order to protect his loved ones. He even gave up his pursuit of trying to be better than Gokuu. The most telling evidence of his transformation is to compare his views of how he wants the dragon balls to be used. At his first appearance, he wants to use them selfishly, to gain immortality and rule the universe. At the end of the series, he uses them to save everyone. Quite a turnaround, I'd say.

As for GT....leather pants = hella sexy. Freddy Mercury mustache = SO NOT sexy. Vegeta seemed to be more comic relief in GT (I think he had all of the funniest moments!), since Toei was too busy fapping to Gokuu to bother making anyone else useful. I did like his episode where he basically reflected on his own character development (as a bonus, he had cute interactions with Bulma in that episode, too). But anyway that's my take on the man who went from being a Giant Monkey to a big pussy

"Bejiita-sama"?! E-gad, and I thought I'd never see anyone use that name, again.

This is one reason I dislike Vegeta: The name "Bejita" makes me cringe. Reminds me of my earlier days on this forum when I used to say it. :x
