Perhaps his perception changed after merging with Nail and Kami.SSVegetto wrote:Well, in the story he does. But Piccolo expected him to fight regardless and not be a coward. You are telling me then and there Gohan wasn't scared out of his mind then, Gohan at the time had little to no real fighting experience, he was more scared then, then when he versed Cell probably.

Ah what the hell, my favorite character is Goku of course. After him comes Tenshinahn. Goku is such a likable character it's almost hard to find things I dislike about him. He's naive, an idiot at times, and best of all he's not overly complicated. And Tenshinhan? Well, the third eye is pretty cool.

Why is it hypocritical to be a voice of reason? Goku can be such an idiot sometimes and Piccolo saw this. Piccolo had grown to care for Gohan by this point.SSVegetto wrote:Well, in the story he does. Also I might add that Gohan put himself up to fighting with that display of Power against Raddiz.

But I agree with you.
I actually felt some emotion from that scene with FUNimation's Season 1 dub with Japanese BGM, but in the Japanese version I was like "...uh...lolwut?".

Bless you Kunzait. I don't know how I missed this topic coming back up but you've done a better job explaining that point than I would have anyway. Made me laugh too.Kunzait_83 wrote: In short, he's a changed dude from back in the day by that point. "The Stockholm Syndrome is a psychological shift that occurs in captives when they are threatened gravely but shown acts of kindness by their captors. Captives who exhibit the syndrome tend to sympathize with and think highly of their captors, at times believing that the captors are showing them favor stemming from inherent kindness. Such captives fail to recognize that their captors' choices are essentially self-serving. When subjected to prolonged captivity, these captives can develop a strong bond with their captors, in some cases including a sexual interest.
In many cases, capture may also involve the killing (or threat of killing) of the captive's relatives, thereby isolating the captive. The captive is subjected to isolation and so sees even a small act, such as providing amenities, as a great favor. Such captives may side with their captors while believing their captors have conferred on them great importance and love."
You are forgetting something. It was Piccolo's harshness that made him a great mentor for Gohan. That is what Gohan needed to bring out his full power. When Goku was training Gohan in the hyperbolic time chamber. Goku was treating Gohan more like his son than a true warrior. That is why Gohan couldn't reach his full potential unless Goku was harsh and he had to let go the fact that he was his son, and he was just a boy. And how is Goku an idiot when he finally realizes this and trains hims right? Goku learned this and he had true faith in Gohan. Goku knew that was the only way to beat Cell. Because Goku noticed a glimpse of Gohan's SS2 power in the time chamber.Sunlight & City Night wrote:Why is it hypocritical to be a voice of reason? Alright, Piccolo may not be a hypocrite because his perception had changed because of Kami. But he didn't trust Gohan just because Gohan was a boy. Even though Gohan had the same training as Trunks, Vegeta, and Goku. Goku was the only one who truly believed in him and didn't look down on him just because he was a boy. That gave Gohan great confidence in himself.
Goku, was brilliant for his decision. And the others couldn't see it because they were blinded by the fact that Gohan was just a boy. I knew it when I was watching these episodes. Goku is not dumb, he had a plan, he knew what Gohan was capable of, and his planned worked.

Was part of it misjudging how much power was hidden inside Gohan? yes, certainly. But when someone you love is suffering like he was it has the tendency to blind people to things. Pic's always gone to help Gohan despite whatever danger it would put him in- it's what he does, he protects the kid. I've always been pretty struck by the way he cared a lot more about the kid's mental state than his own father did, and that never leaves me in that scene.

What about Gohan's mental state then? Piccolo didn't seem to care then? Oh that's right I can't use that argument. Piccolo is Kami. My bad. I just love bringing that one up though
Did you hate Piccolo at that point of the series?
Although I have thought up another one.
What about when Majin Buu was kicking Vegeta's ass. And Piccolo tries to stop Trunks from saving his own father. Hypocritical much Piccolo? If that was Gohan down there, you would have been quick to jump down there and rescue him. Don't you care about Vegeta's mental state?
Of course then the argument is that Trunks cared about his own Father's mental state. Where Goku didn't even care about Gohan's own mental state. Geez, I can even find my own contradictions.
Anyways, I think Goku had to stop caring about Gohan's mental state just a little and look as Gohan as a fighter that was ready to almost die near death, to risk a chance that Gohan's SS2 power would finally awaken. That was Earth's only chance.
And Piccolo wanted to convince Goku otherwise that his son was wondering why his father wasn't helping him. But I don't think Gohan was thinking this. Gohan knew that Goku was counting on him 100%. But you are right Piccolo did care more about Gohan's mental state at the time. I just think Piccolo was wrong about Gohan's mental state though. Because Gohan understood the trust that Goku placed in him.
