Favourite Character?
I did a Search but couldn't find anything, Who is your Favourite Character. From any of the Series (Dragonball/Z/GT/Movies). Mine would have to be either Future Trunks or SSJ2 Teen Gohan.

When I was watching DBZ as a kid , I always liked the idea of Trunks coming from the Future, I was always interested with the multiple timelines of the series. When he skillfully sliced-and-diced Freeza, his identity being completely clueless to everyone else. He was so incredibly bad-ass in that episode. I like that his story had an ending, with Trunks going back to his time and killing the Androids there.
So yeah, Future Trunks is my favorite Character.

Next quest: Buy the Super: Broly and Super Hero Blurays, also Daima whenever that releases in the states. Also the Super Manga!

Goku's my favorite; I entered the fandom at a point in the series airing on Toonami where he was just amazing (beating up on Jeice and Burter while rescuing Gohan, Kuririn, and Vegeta) and he left a huge impression on me. I liked him even more the more I found out about him through online research. :3
I hesitate to rank the rest of the cast, since the characters I like most tends to vary from arc to arc. Piccolo, Vegeta, and Mirai Trunks are always near the top though. (I was so disappointed when Trunks left to return to the future at the end of the Cell Arc. I didn't want him to leave. )

On hiatus.

*stretches* Alright, reposting from a prior thread, because it took a while to type it the first time and it's still very true for me.
_______________________
Piccolo Daimaou, the younger. Has been since 1999 and I don't see that ever changing.
There's a lot of things I love about the man that I could go on about for a few pages just to start, but I'll try to keep it brief:
The first thing that drew me to him was the voice. I had been (and still am) a massive Beast Wars fan before ever hearing of Dragonball and my favorite character was this very stoic, silent, honor-bound and very tall fellow named Dinobot. Long story short, he's awesome. And when I first heard Piccolo speak in that low rumble... something about him reminded me of Dinobot, and that instantly made me infer certain things about him and made me like him instantly. I later found out that the same man voiced both of them, but at the time I had no idea of this awesome little fact.
His whole story fascinates me, with the dying world and the Child of Kattatsu sent off into the void, only to grow up lost in Yunzabit and twisted by the reality around him- the whole strive to become God to watch over people he loathed, the massive possibilities for the war with Garlic Sr. and the early days of Daimaou's split and reign of terror, the guild deep in Kami-sama, the revival of such a magnificently wicked (and handsome) fellow throwing the world into chaos again and.... and there’s all of this pathos and drama and Piccolo himself hasn't even been born yet. I'll cut the history lesson here because we all know the rest of it, and I'm beginning to ramble ^^;
Then there's the man himself. He's so damn quiet and severe, absolutely serious and I have to use the word fascinating again. He's always drawn me in and made me curious long before I fell in love with the guy. Part of it is my introduction to the series- long story short, second thing I ever saw was the three young warriors trying to defend Muuri and the children and it's stuck hard on me. And part of it is Gohan. He's such a sweet little boy as a kid, I liked him, and through all that early training for the Sayiajin you learn to know the guy as Gohan does. I have a very deep soft spot for that relationship and the changes it brought out in Pic that made him so much more complicated as a person.
I'm trying to keep this short aren't I... He's a freaking genius in the middle of a battle- except when he's basically a hatchling and right after fusing with Neru (and getting a huuuge ego boost/righteous anger surge from Neru's memories of his brothers compounded by touching back down on his ancestral homeland for the first time in centuries) he thinks through every action and plans ahead of the others who usually just barge in headfirst guns-a-blazing. He's a tactical genius. And he's gorgeous. And I love his whole character arc and it's time for me to cut things short before I take another six paragraphs talking about him ^^;
Piccolo, followed by Gohan, followed by Yamcha. My favorite characters in my favorite show ever.

Son Goku. He just represents everything about Dragonball that I love. The sense of adventure, the carefree world, and let's not forget he/it can switch from this, to completely badass at any time.

I agree 100%Rory wrote:Son Goku. He just represents everything about Dragonball that I love. The sense of adventure, the carefree world, and let's not forget he/it can switch from this, to completely badass at any time.
I also really like Frieza. While others may have surpassed him in power over the years in my opinion no other villain in the series was as bad-ass. I always felt the others that came after him we're bad guys because they knew no better really. Frieza was just bad for the fun of it!
Finally I'd say Dragonball era Bulma, she always makes me laugh. Toriyama drew her more exaggerated expressions really well.

I'm going to go ahead and say Vegeta. He's hopelessly flawed and not all that likable, but his progression throughout the serious is so entertaining.
He transforms from a power-hungry, self-serving all around jerk to a reluctant good-guy, who eventually learns to care about people and things other than himself.
As ironic as it sounds, he seems the most human to me because he's so flawed- He's self-righteous and jealous, arrogant, petty, unpredictable- he struggles with the concepts of right and wrong, while all the other characters, Goku specifically, seem to have an air of omnipotence about them- always doing the right thing for the right reasons, always being a hero. He may not be the most pleasant, or the best role-model, but he's pretty dynamic.

Goku definitely, like Chuquita said, I started also watching DBZ around the Ginyu and Freeza sagas on Toonami.
A selfless, sacrificing hero that can forgive even the most evil villains such as Vegeta. Without Goku there would be no fun to DBZ. Him forgiving Vegeta and letting him live was very noble of him.
And if you like Vegeta, then you have to like Goku more. (You don't have to take that literally though, I'm just making a point)
Vegeta would cease to exist without Goku sparing his life and if Vegeta wasn't in the anime, the anime would have lost interest very quickly. The whole Freeza arc was very interesting because of Vegeta.
Another thing that amazes me about Goku is that he is full of surprises. You never know what he is going to do next. Such as Goku putting faith in his son to fight Cell. Everyone thought Goku was crazy and out of his mind for doing so. And it was funny to see Piccolo react to Goku about this.
That made the whole cell arc very interesting, because you didn't know what was going to happen next. And Goku didn't make it all about him wanting to be the hero again and trying to stop Cell. Goku didn't even care that Gohan surpassed, just as long as Earth would be saved once again.

Uh... he let Vegeta live because he was a strong guy who he wanted to get stronger so he could face against him again...SSVegetto wrote:Goku definitely, like Chuquita said, I started also watching DBZ around the Ginyu and Freeza sagas on Toonami.

..........Actually, that was one of the scenes that made me the absolute angriest with him because of his unbeliveable insensitivity for a boy who hated fighting- sending Gohan in to fight is one thing, but tossing Cell a senzu juuuust to make sure his child goes through as much pain as possible getting there? I'm with Piccolo on this one, and that scene has never made me laugh, it makes me furious.
There's nothing wrong with you liking Son of course, but I'm just a little startled that this would be one of your 'stellar moments' for him o_O Why not any one of the scenes where he's cool, why the one where he's willingly tormenting his kid and getting his ass verbally handed to him by someone who actually cares about the boy?

Favorite character?
Farmer with the gun.
The way he bales that hay, the grace with which he handles his truck, the character development he receives during the Aiming The Gun arc...
Okay, it's really Son Goku. Not a complicated character, but I'm fascinated by how so many fans misinterpret him, and in looking at him, he's probably my favorite one.
What I think I like the most about Goku is that he's not just some muscle-bound, moralizing superhero. He's a child-like hillbilly alien who saves the world now and then. He's uneducated, he's naive, he's a little selfish. He puts his own desires onto others as if it was natural that they want he wants. He's a bit of a jerk, even. But he's also pure-hearted in his intentions.
Like I've said before, Goku is kung-fu Huck Finn.

I was wondering who was going to correct me on this one. I was testing to see who was serious when it comes to dub changes to the original script. I like the English dub version better at this part, even though the translation is incorrect. I just get more emotional at that part with funimation's dub.Metalwario64 wrote:Uh... he let Vegeta live because he was a strong guy who he wanted to get stronger so he could face against him again...

Well, for one thing, Piccolo doesn't have an opinion on this one I'm afraid. He is just a fictional character. Well, in the story he does. But I found it kind of hypocritical that Piccolo was acting like this towards Goku about having Gohan fighting Cell. Since it was Piccolo that put Gohan up to fighting Saiya-jins even though Gohan's power wasn't even close to beating Nappa and Gohan had no chance. But Piccolo expected him to fight regardless and not be a coward. You are telling me then and there Gohan wasn't scared out of his mind then, Gohan at the time had little to no real fighting experience, he was more scared then, then when he versed Cell probably.
Anyways, the whole point is that no one believed in Gohan's power but Goku. They all took him for granted just because he was a "boy". Goku had true faith in his son. This is what true faith is. Even though Gohan had the same training as Goku did. What Goku did was treat him like a man. Of course Gohan didn't like fighting as much as Goku does. But why would he even want to train if he had no intention at all to fight? Goku treated Gohan like a man, like another warrior fighting another warrior. Gohan felt proud, and felt like he had a sense of worth that Goku entrusted him with.
And I like how you look at is , that Goku is letting Gohan getting his ass tormented. Nah, I don't think Goku looked at it like that. I think Goku was treating Gohan like a man, and like a true hero. Just as when Gohan, Krillin, and Piccolo did not step in to interrupt Goku's fight with Freeza, when Goku was getting his ass handed to him by Freeza. No, I didn't think Goku's objective was to see Gohan get tortured and killed (Nor did he enjoy seeing Gohan get tortured). Of course he wanted Gohan to win, and he knew the time would come when the tables would turn and Gohan would end up fighting back and awakening his true power.
Goku is not only a brilliant fighter, but a brilliant father. And Piccolo's reaction to Goku was just hilarious. Goku surprised and shocked everyone. A character that does that is truly brilliant. So, I'm glad you brought this up. Also, if you want to look at it differently you can. I just had to pick this part for one of his stellar moments. I couldn't resist.
Another intense moment was when Goku was fighting Freeza and Freeza had him on the ropes, when he was holding Goku's head in the water.
In this moment, I thought the Japanese version was the best. He had that horrifying dream. Then that made him force Freeza off of him and then he launched a Kamehameha at him. That scene is like one of my all time favorites. That dream represented reality if he would have lost against Freeza.

Eh, I don't know about whether Goku really knew what was best for Gohan in the Cell Games. He knew Gohan had the potential to defeat Cell, but he assumed that Gohan would eventually like fighting as much as he did. When Piccolo pointed out how badly it was turning out for him, Goku got this look on his face, like, "Oh god, what have I done?"
Goku didn't really intend for Gohan to be a "hero", just to be stronger than he is. Goku doesn't have an opinion on heroism. Heroism means nothing to Goku, he's not sophisticated enough to think that way. Saving the world is usually incidental to him. His opponents are just tough guys he wants to beat, because fighting excites him as it does any other Saiyan.
Goku just wanted his son to be stronger than him, to work to his potential. He had no intention of making Gohan a hero, just better.
Obviously, during the Cell Games, it took more than Goku could give his son to make him reach his potential. That's where Android 16 comes in.
