Choose your next words carefully persian. Luffy is a cool character, but he just doesn't stand out as a brilliant "top 5" especially when compared to characters on there, such as Yagami Light, Edward Elric, and Spike Spiegel, who all deserved to be ranked higher ('cept Spike).Amigo Ten wrote:There was no way Vegeta, let alone Naruto, should be higher than Luffy. Another thing you guys gotta remember - this is probably based off today's popular stuff... in America!* Hence Naruto. Personally, I'm shocked and extremely happy Kenshin got enough attention to make it in at all.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
If they held this list off for two years, a Soul Eater character would be on it.

Well, I haven't seen those shows. I was only comparing him to the DB and Naruto characters.Rory wrote:Choose your next words carefully persian. Some of the comments from the users on IGN are quite hilarious, especially all the sterotyping about Dragon Ball (or "DBZ" I should say).
Alright, I'm going to bed.
And my personal favoriteI mean sure Dragonball is a crap story to begin with, all its about is a bunch of people screaming and yelling, showing their teeth and talk in the middle of a fight but Goku is not the greatest character in Anime.
HAHAHA.Any list with DB/DBZ characters in it gets an automatic fail

That's a pretty horrible list. Glad Goku was recognized, but as #1? And Code Geass, Trigun, and Bleach made the list? While Luffy is in the 20s? And where's Terry Bogard? He should have made the bottom of the list.

I dont think IGN would put him in the same catagory as anime characters even though KOF is japanese. I do wish that Oinzuka made the list.Dayspring wrote:That's a pretty horrible list. I'm not just refering to the fact that it's Japanese, but the fact that it had a huge impact on comics, manga and anime in North America. The Fatal Fury movies were among the major influencial anime when anime and manga first became a big thing in North America. Added to that, it was the Fatal Fury Motion Picture that made Joe Madureira draw in manga style, and a love of his artwork is what lead to many artists in North American comics adopting the manga style through immitation.goku the krump dancer wrote:I dont think IGN would put him in the same catagory as anime characters even though KOF is japanese. Much bigger than friggin' Code Geass, at least.

Well I think the people at IGN wouldnt know that, or digg that deep to find out, I think this list was just on some of the most popular of anime.Dayspring wrote:I'm not just refering to the fact that it's Japanese, but the fact that it had a huge impact on comics, manga and anime in North America. They had frikkin' Pikachu: A game "character"(I like Pokemon, well, the games and manga at least, but seriously?) who also happened to get an anime. That would be like putting Mario on there as an "anime character."goku the krump dancer wrote:I dont think IGN would put him in the same catagory as anime characters even though KOF is japanese. IGN's "Top __" lists are jokes anyway.

I don't understand why this many people are shocked about Luffy's standing in this apparent "greatest" list. Even given that the list is hardly representative of a true panel of otaku experts, Luffy is about where he should be given One Piece as a series, its relative youth in anime and the other characters/shows represented in the list. I won't deny the popularity of the story or its lead character, but both still have a long way to go before they reach the "historic" status of something like DragonBall.
I would put Luffy no higher and no lower on that list.

I was floored when I realized Astro Boy/Mighty Atom wasn't #1. I mean Dragonball getting props is cool, but the explanation they gave for Son being #1 was ridiculous and... seriously. That's like having Stairway to Heaven be #2. It just doesn't work. Some of the list is nice but some of it... I just gotta shake my head.
Oh, and Rory... were you referring to what I think you were referring to and was Persian meant to be capitalized? Because I laughed pretty goddamn hard when that line jumped out of such an amazingly random place.

I love how it says "counting down a quarter-century of anime greats", and then includes characters from the 60s and 70s. Where the hell did they even get this "quarter-century" stuff from? Was anime invented in 1984?
You could say the same thing about including characters like Goku, Luffy, and Kusanagi, who started out in manga.Metalwario64 wrote:They had frikkin' Pikachu: A game "character"(I like Pokemon, well, the games and manga at least, but seriously?) who also happened to get an anime.
