Was this proven, or was that just what Yamcha thought?

It's a virus. Viruses are not at all like cancer and aren't spawned from one's own genes, and you can't be born with them unless your mom had it, and in that case it's unlikely it'd wait around for thirty years to activate.

There's absolutely no reason to believe that the author added that comment just to make the reader think the opposite of what he intended.

HIV started out in monkeys, then moved to people. There are plenty of other diseases on this planet that originated within one species, then adapted to work in another. The are others that work in more than one species. The rarity of space viruses that affect Saiya-jins/Earthlings is probably the only reason the entire world didn't die from a swarm of mega-plagues by the end of GT. :P
