That's about as awkward as the Japanese names for some of the techniques (like the Makankosappo) in English.

What the Taiwanese call Bulma was a better choice compared to her name in the Hong Kong translations. In Taiwan, she was 布馬 ("Bu-Ma") compared to the 莊子 ("Jong Ji) in the Hong Kong version.

But despite the changes in names for the Hong Kong edition of Dragon Ball, Piccolo's name change is so bad-ass. They renamed him to 笛子魔童 (dek ji moh tung). "dek ji" being a literal translation of a piccolo. "moh tung" meaning the child of a demon. Plus, it sounds like something you would hear in a wuxia novel.
That's a cool transliteration, so it's like "Devil Piccolo Jr." That does sound pretty wuxia.

Have they changed any of the attack names this time around? I remember seeing the Cantonese version where Vegeta's Final Flash was changed to "Extreme Light Ray Finisher."
I forgot how Vegeta's finishing moves were renamed in Cantonese. It's been a while since I've read the manga or seen any of the Cantonese dubbed anime. I'm pretty sure the eventual Cantonese dub will keep the sae dub names. TVB's got too many anime lined up in their schedule in Hong Kong. I think they're still airing Gintama and Soul Eater (only two of the shows on TVB right now). They've also gotta deal with dubbing Naruto Shippuden, Bleach, Keroro and more.

I was going to include this in tonight's podcast update, but I'm a little confused after reading the thread again with some links removed.

Which dub is airing in which country on what channel...?

So we've got a new Cantonese dub of Kai that's airing on... which channel, exactly? But it didn't actually start on January 1st, since a streaming version of the first episode was already available by that point?

And we're expecting a Taiwanese dub (in Mandarin?) separate from this on another channel?

I'll help you EX. It's airing on TTV in Taiwan, and it's the Mandarin dub, but it's streaming on TVB's website. There is no word on a Cantonese dub yet.

No, it's not streaming on TVB's site.
The streaming video link I removed is one of those sites on the *uhm* shady side of legitimacy (they're even using the TVB logo) if you catch my drift. TVB would apply region locking on streaming videos for their official sites. Hence, why I removed the link in the first place. Nothing has been announced for the Cantonese dub which one can immediately assume will be done by TVB as they have done so for DBZ in the past.

There's no word on home releases in Taiwan since it barely just started a week ago.

It appears this is the official Taiwanese website for Dragon Ball Kai. Apparently, it's scheduled to air on Saturdays at 6pm followed by "Fairy Tail". TTV also airs the Mandarin dub of "One Piece".

I won't take this as a sign that Kai will be continuing into the Buu arc, but I notice that the Taiwanese website has profiles for Goten, Gotenks, and Buu.

Hmm, they went with "DragonBall Z Kai" as well. I wonder if this is a Toei demand. ::shrugs::

So, if I understand this right, we can stream episodes online?

Not legitimately. That illegal streaming site only posted one episode.
Nothing else has been uploaded since then.

The score has been replaced from episode 14. These are what Nagasaki used:

M1606 - Title card
M741 - Goku powers up
M1525 - Goku vs Vegeta
M737 - Vegeta decides to destroy the earth
M742 - Kamehameha vs Galic Gun
M1412 - Yajirobe talks to Goku ~ Vegeta is chagrined
M1314 - Vegeta notices that there is no moon
M1405 - Explanation about Oozaru
M735 - Vegeta morphs into Oozaru
M1318 - Oozaru is complete
M1307 - Goku vs Oozaru Vegeta
M1418 - Goku plunges into crisis

Even though they do not have an access to the unreleased and mono-only pieces, there are still about 100 tracks he can use, however, he is using the same few pieces over and over again. :x

Sorry for bringing this old topic back but a friend of mine wants desperately to know where he can find the Taiwan Mandarin Dub of the second season of DragonBall Z Kai (Episodes 54-98). He already has the first season from Horng En Culture Co. LTD (4 Box Sets) and now wants the second one.

Do you know where he can buy (or watch) the second season?

I'm pretty sure it is. Every international version/dub made thus far of Kai has changed it to "Z Kai." The Brazilian Portuguese dub verbally refers to the show as "Dragon Ball Kai," but that's about as close to an exception that we have had thus far, as even they still have the modified "Z Kai" logo. Chris Sabat also mentioned on his Facebook that changing it to "Z Kai" was a demand from Toei.

Personally, I like the change, and I think it makes more sense. After all, if we interpret Kai to mean "refreshed," then it would be more accurate to refer to the show as Dragon Ball Z refreshed, rather than Dragon Ball refreshed.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."
