Re: Do you like all filler?
Why do you insist on calling the anime "the original"? It's an adaptation of the manga. Hey, would you be offended if I call you "manga hater" from now on?

The scenes that you refer to as part of "Toei's story", are actually called filler believe it or not, and denying this definition will not do you much good.AnimeMaakuo wrote:The scenes that everybody calls "filler," is actually part of Toei's story believe it or not, and whining about it will not do you much good.
Yet you seem to sprint unnecessarily to Toei's defense whenever somebody so much as makes their distaste with any aspect of the anime even slightly apparent.AnimeMaakuo wrote:Haters can hate Toei's original, but I could care less.
Re: Do you like all filler?
Do I like all of the filler? Not a chance. I would find it hard to believe that there is anyone out there that really likes every last bit of filler. Heck, I don't even like all of the non filler portions of the story. I do however like a lot of the filler.
Re: Do you like all filler?
I can't say I enjoy every filler they made but there are a lo of
I agree, a lot of the times added filler scenes helped shape character depth and relationships. The example was already given, but I think it's worth mentioning again, the growing relationship between Gohan and Piccolo. I watched the anime version before the manga, and when I came to that part in the manga I was kinda shocked to see how fast the "training" period went by, with only a very few scenes with Gohan and Piccolo.
Not to mention my favorite filler episode of all time, Goku and Piccolo go to driving school
I also happen to like the Garlic Jr. Saga
But yeah, a lot of fillers can be unbelievabaly frustrating.

Re: Do you like all filler?
I generally think filler is alright, but naturally some filler that I really HATE!
Ginyu Force on Kaio-Sama's planet: Ok it makes absolutely NO sense that Ten, Chaouzu and Yamucha would so easily defeat a team that Vegeta just had some problems with about 2 days ago or whatever. I don't care how long they've been there.
Bulma and the crabs: boring boring boring! When so much exciting stuff is going on with the other characters I couldn't care any less about what Bulma is doing. Don't get me wrong though, I do like Bulma adventure's when they are actually relevant to the plot. Those instances are pretty much confined to DB and early Namek I think.
Gohan's second Ape transformation: Causes that contradiction with Goku's ship and what not.
The other world tournament: Sorry guys -.- I wouldn't dislike this filler so much, but I just can't bring myself to accept that the people at the tournament were supposed to be the strongest fighters from the entire history of the galaxy. It just doesn't sit well with me. Also I don't like how easy it was to beat Cell after they just had so much trouble with him 2 episodes ago or whatever.
I think those are about the only filler stories that I hate. I do hate standoffs and the fight cut away's as well. And some of the fighting filler isn't choreographed so well either.

Re: Do you like all filler?
I really love all the filler after Uranai baba arc and before 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai.
The second bigger portion before 23rd is not that bad, but I don't enjoy the filler in Z much.
It's kinda boring me then.

The filler that I hate the most is the fake Namek filler, but the other filler is alright. I really liked the filler after the 23rd martial arts tournament, how they had Emperor Pilaf at the end of Dragon ball, which should have been his last appearance in the anime, and they should have shown Goku and Chichi consummate the marriage, its always nice to end a story with a bang
.

I have to say that I enjoyed most of the filler in Dragonball, however I found it hit and miss in Z. A lot of all the filler surrounding Namek and Freeza was absolutely horrible.
I have a Dragon Ball collection of sorts which can be seen here.

Re: Do you like all filler?
I generally liked the filler that actually added something (Garlic Jr. saga having a different type of villain and a much-needed break from Freeza, the "learning to drive" episode being silly, the dead-people tournament showing the other Kais and past warriors that actually come close to or even equal some of the DBZ cast) or expanded on something that was really short in the manga and could actually use some expanding (extended Great Saiyaman scenes.)
Not really a big fan of the filler that was added to inflate already-long-enough scenes, like all the random added bits in fights (Freeza's "five minutes" goes from "okay, they're fighting so fast that it only seems like it would take longer since it's slowed down so we can see what's going on" to "there's no way that was just five minutes, even in slow-mo.") Sometimes it's okay (when very short fights get extended a little bit), but other times it's just ridiculous.
And worst of all is the filler that adds random bits to inflate fights and throws off power comparisons completely. Like SSj3 Goku fighting somehow Super Buu and not getting his ass handed to him (even though he fights about evenly with Fat Buu earlier and Kid Buu later...), SSj2 Goku fighting Kid Buu and not getting his ass handed to him like Vegeta did, Yamcha somehow beating Olibu, and so on.
Also one of the many reasons why I can't stand GT, even though normally I like "new storyline" filler... after the initial Dragonball-hunt (which actually wouldn't be too bad, if not for the whole "whoops, Goku forgot how to fly or be superhumanly strong... because it's GT" thing that happens constantly) is over, GT is nothing but one long string of fights where the relative power levels of everyone make no sense and Goku is magically stronger than everyone in the universe (and it's not even just the "main character is usually the strongest" thing like in DB/DBZ... at least back then there were characters who were almost as strong as Goku, and occasionally someone even surpassed him!)

This. Also, the Vegeta flashbacks and Vegeta getting grossed out by things in Buu's stomach were some of my favorites tooPantalones wrote:I generally liked the filler that actually added something (Garlic Jr. saga having a different type of villain and a much-needed break from Freeza, the "learning to drive" episode being silly, the dead-people tournament showing the other Kais and past warriors that actually come close to or even equal some of the DBZ cast) or expanded on something that was really short in the manga and could actually use some expanding (extended Great Saiyaman scenes.)

Well technically speaking, the anime version isn't the original, it's an adaptation of the "manga volumes agenda." And nobody is talking about accepting it, we're talking about whether or not we enjoy watching it.AnimeMaakuo wrote:Haters can hate Toei's original, but I could care less. Re: Do you like all filler?
I would really love it if Toei could just do 'seasons' of animated adaptations of manga. Then you don't have to worry about overtaking the comics without boring me to tears. One Piece would be a lot more enjoyable to watch if someone just edited together the last-episode recaps...

It was actually the same day; everything from Ginyu and co. reaching Namek to the end of the Goku/Freeza fight is a single day.violadude wrote:Ginyu Force on Kaio-Sama's planet: Ok it makes absolutely NO sense that Ten, Chaouzu and Yamucha would so easily defeat a team that Vegeta just had some problems with about 2 days ago or whatever.

I like most of it, though I wish Goku vs. Freeza wasn't so drawn out.

Re: Do you like all filler?
No, don't like all the filler.
- I hate every bit of filler in the Saiya-jin arc.
- I like Saiyan-jin history filler in the Namek arc. Everything else, hate.
- I hate every bit of filler (especially) in the Freeza arc (the horror of it
) except the build-up filler for Kaio-ken 20x, Genki-dama, and SSj.
That's what I can remember for now (most of it).
@AnimeMaakuo
No, stuff like walking or flying are not filler. There are part of the canon events. Events like meeting orphans in outer space are filler because it didn't got shown in the Manga. While stuff like walking or flying are not filler because it got shown (even though not every frame of it, but it didn't need to because it's already obvious unlike the Anime filler) in the Manga.

Re: Do you like all filler?
In keeping with the general consensus of a lot of the folks here, I like some.
Saiyan saga had some scenes I enjoyed seeing, such as reintroducing Yamucha, Tenshinhan, Launch etc. Some of the filler scenes added to what was built upon during Dragon Ball, and helped you understand and care about the characters, making their deaths from Nappa hit the audience harder. If I were watching Kai as a first-timer, I wouldn't have given a rat's ass since those characters had little to no screen-time.
The fake-Namek saga had some good moments, but I largely just kept it on in the background while I was doing Battlegrounds in WoW the other night, only really stopping to watch the scenes of Vegeta on Freeza No. 79.
Bulma and the crab is stupid shit that I'm dreading getting to, as is some of the battle between Goku and Freeza. It's a good fight, but it drew on way too long and made the threat of "Five minutes until the planet turns to dust!" seem absurd and asinine. I also
didn't much care for the Z-Team beating up the Ginyu Force, but that's for plot-power purposes and not animation griping.
No comment on the Garlic Jr saga, it's enjoyable and animated nicely so long as you keep in mind that it's completely not canon. I think it would've been ten times more interesting to see Vegeta and Tenshinhan having gotten in on the main plot, instead of either being in space, or MIA.
If I think of it later, I'll go into more detail, but as far as I remember, the only filler in the later sagas I had an issue with was Yamucha beating up Olive and Paikuhan. Even the villains keeping their bodies in Hell was something I enjoyed, and it would have been perfect if they had removed Piccolo's line about evil people losing their bodies and being cleansed.

Re: Do you like all filler?
I love the Saiyan-arc filler, particularly the episode "Pendulum Room Peril" and the escapades on Arlia. I enjoyed the way the former portrayed the Saiyans as absolute irredeemable savages with literal fountains of blood on their home planet who engage in a state of never-ending civil war (someone had to have created all those Saiyan skeletons littering the ground!) before the race was somewhat nerfed later on. Early in the series the Saiyans were less "prideful space vikings" and more "interstellar sociopaths", and I prefer them that way. As for "Trouble on Arlia", it also tied into that depiction of the Saiyans as genuine bad guys, and helped to build up Vegeta as a credible "headline" threat, even if some people think that it portrays him as too powerful.
After that, though, the filler is mostly hit-or-miss for me. I didn't really need to see Goku or Gohan train for the Saiyans, but it wasn't bad for what it was. Like Vernichter, the fake-Namek episodes I found mostly pointless, and I don't care much at all for the Garlic Junior saga. Ginyu vs. the Z Fighters was interesting and a good way to keep them involved. Pikkon is Piccolo-lite and not very interesting to me. The Great Saiyaman fluff is the worst.
