It's a shame that the TVTropes Dragon Ball page is passing it off as such.

Name-bindingly, yes, he does. But, actual input?

"Toriyama-san, is it all right if we create an alternate ending to your series? Also, may we make Ki arts a normal human gift that isn't exclusive only to fighters? In addition, we also want to involve Kami-sama and Popo-san. And lastly, can we create an entire race of Majin Boo-spawned beings?"

"Uh, yeah, sure, okay, and um, make the Boo-spawned race the product of childish and innocent playdough sex. Boo-san is a funny guy, haha. I'll do the designs. Sheesh, haven't done that since '08. Can't we use Nakatsuru-kun? [He jokingly laughs but hints seriousness]"

Also, no. He never said it was canon. People just assumed that because he gave the okay on the ideas. But he also did that for GT and the movies.

I just hope I'm around to see the day that Akira Toriyama comes stateside to an anime convention and one fan asks him, "Is _________ canon/a part of the main storyline?" AT's gonna pull off the world's very first Shunkan Ido straight back to Nihon.

As far I am concerned, Toriyama worked with Dragon Ball Online for a while. So it's not comparable to GT in any means.

Besides, I feel like a lot of people is being discriminative because it's a different media. However Toriyama has always been involved in videogames. It is certainly a media you should take in account when it comes to Toriyama.

But it's not just because it's a different media - it's a MMO. Think about that for a sec. That means that there is no set series of events sans the backstory.

I'm pretty sure that MMOs are capable of having certain ingame events that everyone does. Besides, it's not uncommon to have a canon story even if it's for a game that allows players to experience the story in different ways. You can play Final Fantasy VII without meeting Yuffie or Vincent. Officially, though, they joined the party. Like I said earlier, I don't particularly care if DBO is canon. It's worth pointing out that such a change in media does not inherently mean DBO can't be canon, though. It's not as unprecedented as some of the people here think it is.

Nevertheless, unless Toriyama says that it is canon, that it is a side-story ala GT, or that it takes place in an alternate timeline ala the movies, I'm taking DBO as canon as Super Saiyan Bardock from Heroes.

Just because he made designs doesn't mean it's canon to the original manga as a sequel. We don't even know how much Toriyama even worked on it.

Well, it's not quite the same. With GT he checked the script and submitted character/machine designs, but this was only for the DB search at the very beginning of the series. He had essentially no involvement of any kind with the Baby, Super 17, or evil dragon story lines, and those make up the bulk of the series. With DBO he's supposed to have OK'd all the story elements and character designs and submitted many designs of his own, so assuming the game makers aren't just blowing smoke when they say this, he's been more thoroughly and consistently involved with the game from beginning to end. His involvement with the movies is probably closer to what he's done for DBO, since he checked the script for the movies (even contributing a few ideas, like Slug being weak to whistling) and submitted character designs on a fairly regular basis from the 2nd DBZ movie onward. On the other hand, he says in Daizenshuu 6 that he sees the movies as a dimension all on their own, so right there we've got word that he doesn't consider the movies as part of the same continuity as the manga, while as far as I know he's said nothing like that for DBO. I agree though that people aren't justified in matter-of-factly calling DBO a "canon" continuation of the manga, since there's no evidence that anyone working on the game sees it in those terms.

I was talking about the story. I don't recall him being the writer of the story for the game?

To say the truth I don't know of any source that confirms it or deny Toriyama involvement with the story.

However, as far I know the style of Toriyama, I tell it was written by him. Besides, the whole time travelling stuff seems to be a conservative approach for a new saga, comparable to what Toei does.

I'd bet money that the Majin thing at the very least was written by him. I don't think there's anyone else in this world who could have come up with something similar. Well, except the part about him reading Bob and Margaret to get the idea, as I can't see him remembering that little detail.

Not to mention that the Majin species was created by Mr. Boo reading one of Satan's adult magazines  that's 100% Toriyama

But it's one-hundred percent Toriyama coming up with an explanation for a mechanic that is one-hundred percent the game developers'.

Isn't this like saying making Goku an alien was 100% Toriyama coming up with an explanation for a plot twist to extend the length of a series he was getting pretty burned out on?

I don't understand how writing the idea for one aspect of the game(Djinn race's birth), even if it was written by Toriyama, makes Dragon Ball Online canon, o_0.

How do you know? Toriyama worked on plenty of games. I don't really see why can't it be Toriyama who came up with the idea of playing with a Majin race.

It doesnt, but it contradicts GT, proving that they're at least two alternate timelines regardless of wether they are "canon" or not.

Who said that? It's being treated as canon(by a select group of people) because he's overseeing plot points, character designs, and combat techniques. Which seems to me, by way of reading this thread, to be a lot more sound and reasonable than the opposing arguments; if they can even be called such.

Then I guess it wouldn't be unreasonable to ask for proof of this?

Anyhow, to answer the original OP's question, no, Toriyama never said DBO is canon.

Asking Toriyama his opinion about canonicity is the same as asking him who win a fight beetween SSJ5 Goku or ULSSJ Broli. He probably don't know what you are talking about.
