Much like how I own the Neko Majin book ($20 Canadian, including shipping, etc.) Akira Toriyama was payed to draw those images, so there's really just a lot of irony in your argument.

I really don't know if there is an infringement issue here, since we are just talking about translations. If they're protected, then I'll have them removed. If Steve or FUNimation doesn't want them public, then I'll have them removed as well.

However, personally, I still don't see the issue with giving people an English translation of the episodes. These days I must admit that it's rather pointless (since IC doesn't run the episodes anymore), but at the time I thought it was an excellent idea.

If you want something, pay for it, god damn it!

The people with IC were paying for Dragonball, I just gave them free translations. And again, $20 CN for Neko Majin, it's not that hard.

First off, I apologize for starting up such negativity, especially regarding a certain site. Despite my intense feelings on what they stand for (and especially their history), I suppose that was inappropriate, especially for what we set out to do on this forum. I'm not trying to be ridiculously rude, so let's try and not get that response back, kplzthx.

Julian and I both own the Neko Majin kanzenban, not to mention a couple of the Monthly Jump issues... so at least we did our part, there. While it's true that the "legalities" are 100% completely the same (say, between Neko Majin and no domestic release and DBZ episodes with a domestic release), remember that we're all anime fans, and there's always a fine line of using morals, ethics, and common-sense "We-otherwise-can't-get-this" ideals.

On this site, we try to follow a fansubber's-ethics-code from ye' olden days of *NOT* "Gimme gimme gimme I'm 12 and like Pokemon and think everything should be handed to me on a golden platter in DVD quality". Our music has never been full CD quality (except for before the DBZ2 & Z3 OSTs were announced, and we had the audio ripped from the games)... so we've lumped them in with a "fansub" type of release, there. They've never been intended to replace the original, and hopefully you're not actually USING 96 kbps to replace an original.... egads, that'd be bad .

So I'm not really sure how to explain it. Since I'm an "older" fan (hah, that's rich... being a fan for a decade hardly qualifies me as being an "older" fan, but these days, it's sad how long that is...), I try to place what we do in the "older" context of fans, fansubs, and distribution.

It can be broken down to the following:

No domestic release, fine to translate and distribute... Domestic license, time to stop

I can understand that plenty of fans just don't agree with this (I mean, take a look at Naruto and One Piece fandom!). However, this doesn't mean I have to AGREE with them (because, quite frankly, I don't, and neither should most fans). When things are licensed, it's really time to start farting around with doing "fan"-lations on them. It's just not appropriate. Leave them alone. They're not "yours," anymore.

If anyone wants to continue this discussion, I'd be more than happy to split this off into a new thread. Anything you want to talk about, whether it be thoughts on translations, domestic releastions, international copyrights, or even our own policies and standpoints on this site... they're all fair game and I'd love to talk with you about them. I can't guarantee a fast response (it's both major real-life-work-project/deadline and Otakon video deadline time ^^), but I'll of course do my best!

Most people do follow the "It's lisenced, no more fanslating!" rule, but it's really VIZ's fault for One Piece and Naruto fanslations. VIZ is really screwing up all of their manga.

Hm, amazing that one post started all this debating. Anyhow, the OA still credits Steve, the dvds, or translating source for the script, so there being honest. I've done a few myself (DBZ movies 4, 10, and GT 13) and plan to transcribe the DBZ OVA. Sorry if that makes me disrepectful in anyone's eyes, but I think reading it is a very interesting experience, especially considering all of GT is up. And if Steve has a problem with his trnaslations being used, by all means I'll ask for my transcribe of movie 4 to be removed. I do know that all of GT on there isn't from the FUNi dvds (which are Steve's translations), so hopefully you guys can read those with a clear consience.

Oh my lord, tell me about it. Yu Yu, Shaman, and DBZ's last chapter have all suffered. Poor Yu-Gi-Oh has even been skipped ahead 2 full saga arcs, and no more DBZ in Shonen Jump

I understand what you're getting at, but I don't think it does anyone any harm. I anything, I would imagine it would boost the sales of DVDs by showing how much better the Japanese script is. Just like you MP3s, this isn't the full product in full quality, but a standalone script, useful for the little things like checking differences between a specific line of dialogue, which you wouldn't buy whole DVDs for. Not to mention it's useful for people like me who simply can't get them. It's a huge project, and a useful one at that, so I wouldn't want to see it taken off the net.
