How did Future Trunks get his sword?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

It's evident that Dragon Ball has secluded corruption, and my fanfics simply expose it. Just look at how much they curse. How perverted Master Roshi is. The nudity. Yamcha's sexual endorsement. The gestures. There's even a chapter that Trunks shown psychopathic signs of hatred.

There's no doubt in my mind that there's been an orgy on Planet Vegeta at least once.

Yes, out of universe, episode 164 came out well before movie 13, but we're in the In-Universe section of the forum. The Dragon Balls, Kinto-Un, Nyoibo, etc. all existed before the deities were introduced into the story. Looking at the overall picture, with a retrospective perspective, the theory has no real problems. All humans carry swords to defend themselves against the Jinzoningen, Trunks happens to carry the special sword to help fight them because he saw what it did to Hildegarn and he's willing to try and gain any advantage he can. Honestly, the idea of Trunks carrying the same sword as normal peons is more unbelievable to me that the Tapion theory, because their blades wouldn't do squat to the mechanical terrors.

The symbolic act can easily be a literal one, though with different events preceding it due to the alternate universe.

Aside from the fact there's about as much logic coming out of it as my Mr. Rogers theory. That's the problem with looking at something solely from an in-universe perspective with impossible events, you need a retrospective of the actual events as to why that theory wouldn't work (and you know, the already supplementary and in-story contradictions). Besides, Daizenshuu #7 pretty much says his sword is refined due futuristic technology. There's nothing that implies Toei would have had Tapion give him the sword, especially when supplementary material contradicts it (and their own filler). They merely created symbolism that was similar to the lots of the elements in the Bardock special in the context of, well, literary elements. Plus any of the plot of Movie #13 even fitting in with the Artificial Humans is a joke in itself.

I always felt like the clips of Future Trunks with his sword they slapped over the credits made it seem like they considered it the same sword, but that's just an interpretation.

Not unlikely - there would be a shortage of supplies and munitions what with the Androids terrorizing the planet.

Since it was possible for Dr. Gero to create artificial humans with bodies tougher than Trunks' sword, it was possible for Bulma to make a Freeza-slicing sword.

It was Trunks' power that enabled him to slice through Freeza, though. This was proven when King Cold asked to use Trunks' sword, thinking that it was the only reason he defeated Freeza, only for Trunks to catch it with his hands and then kill Cold.

I think this was my oldest signature, a quote from Trunks in the FUNi dub: "The weapon does not make the man."

I agree and Daizenshuu 7's contradiction of that is just silly in my honest opinion:
Daizenshuu #7 Item Dictionary wrote:A large, Western-style sword. Its true power is utilized by holding it with both hands. Though it looks like an ordinary sword, it's refined enough to instantly cut the revived Freeza's mechanical body to pieces. It seems that perhaps it's been refined through the future's special technology. All the same, it couldn't cut Super Saiyan Goku or Artificial Human No. 18. It's usually stored in a specially made scabbard worn on Trunks' back.

Yeah, to be honest, I don't think Trunks' sword was that special. Out-of-universe, I don't believe Toriyama wanted any reason for it other than "it looks cool".

I like to think that just because the sword is enchanted against Hildergarns, that doesn't really make it anything special against Androids.

What would that matter? As Kaboom was getting at, the sword is a part of the magical set of items from Konut's god designed to battle Hildegarn; two ocarinas to immobilize him and a sword to defeat him. The Genmajin's strength doesn't factor into the equation, its the magic against magic element. In the hands of an ordinary person, they could probably break Tapions sword by swinging it at a rock at the wrong angle.

Yeah, I deleted my post when I realized that. I'm not particularly familiar with that part of DBZ Movie #13 anyway.

I always liked the idea that Future Trunks' sword was just that; a sword. Nothing special about it. I believe the ending credits just pointed out a similarity between the 2 Trunks characters.

I'm not sure it's that silly. Sure, it's Trunks' strength that made it work, but a less finely crafted sword may have broken with that much strength put behind it. The sword doesn't make the man, but a strong swordsman needs a good sword.

Well, look at the Z-sword. They believe it could kill Dabura, but it was broken...
I was about to say 'by a rock' then, but it wasn't! It was broken by that metal...
If Shin can produce metal like that why doesn't he make another sword? THAT would make more sense than depending on this 'magic' that failed.

Kaboom wrote:I've always liked the good old "Tapion and Hoi showed up in Trunks' future too but events unfolded differently than in Movie 13" idea myself.
Same here. The sword is definitely identical to the one Tapion gave him, so it must be a different version of the same sword. Obviously, the events were different, somehow; and I don't think Future Trunks met Tapion--but somehow that sword got to Earth. If it wasn't the "same" sword, there'd be no significance to Toei implying that.

I think it's one of those "destiny" things. The sword finds its way into the hands of the very brave. Great heroes end up yielding that sword. With different time lines and different universes, and the like, it seems pretty likely.

It could possibly be that timeline's Z sword or "Zeto Swurudu". Well then again maybe not for the simple fact that Jinzo 18 broke it and no one came out of it. Aaaahh I'm getting nosebleeds trying to think about this question!!

Maybe Katchin (or however you spell it) can't be properly sharpened into a blade?

In Raging Blast, it was said that Future Trunks got his sword from Tapion. Movie #13 hints this too. The Daizenshuu however says that it was made in the future. So, I believe this: In the anime, Future Trunks got his sword from Tapion. In the manga, it was made in the future. As for the identical swords in the filler flashback, I believe that the swords' design is just based to Trunks' sword, since he is the hero of that world.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.
