Re: Swear words
What swear words are there in the original? I remember "damn", "shit", "bastard", and I think "fuck(ing)".
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

Re: Swear words
The 4 cornerstones of anime swearing are the following.
*Damn
*Hell
*Ass
*Bastard
Anything beyond those 4 is too excessive for me. I dont need to hear Goku, Ichigo, or Naruto dropping f-bombs or anything.

Re: Swear words
Technically shit could be in the original version. If a character utters "Kuso!", it literally means feces, so it could be translated as "Shit!" or "Crap!".DBZGTKOSDH wrote:What swear words are there in the original? I remember "damn", "shit", "bastard", and I think "fuck(ing)".

Re: Swear words
Damn, hell, and the occasional bastard don't feel forced in Kai, but if they ever say "shit" or "fuck" it would feel like it was trying to sound cool and adult like it does in Yu Yu Hakusho's dub.
The biggest truths aren't original. The truth is ketchup. It's Jim Belushi. Its job isn't to blow our minds. It's to be within reach.

Re: Swear words
I don't think we need these type of words in DB. Usif F bombs does not make the show more mature like Anime Labs try to do back in the day. I find the swearing in DBZ to be okay and it's no different then what you hear in PG-13 movies. Even some PG movies can get away with swear words like shit.

Re: Swear words
Coincidentally I like when Vegeta says pissed or pissing in the english dub of Kai. The way Sabat says it just gets to me, really emphasizes how well...pissed Vegeta is at the time.

Re: Swear words
I still can't get used to hearing Sean Schemmel cursing. After many years of hearing "Super Hero" Goku, it just doesn't feel right to me. Personally I'm ok if a character curses if they are angry, but not ok if they curse casually.
Re: Swear words
The Buu arc of Kai is basically useless if Schemmel doesn't belt out some "DARN YOU"s.

I'm surprised most of you think 'Shit" is taking things too far..? It's harmless.
They say Shit in the original Japanese language don't they?
I'm more interested in hearing Sean say "Ain't". He hasn't said that in the English version yet has he? Goku uses it all the time too.

He did a couple of times in the Cell arc. Also said things like "gonna", and "hafta".LordCrumb wrote:I'm more interested in hearing Sean say "Ain't". He hasn't said that in the English version yet has he? Goku uses it all the time too.

I'm not sure how things are in New Zealand, but in America "shit" is considered a more serious curse word than "hell" or "bastard".LordCrumb wrote:I'm surprised most of you think 'Shit" is taking things too far..? It's harmless.

Yea, it is. "Hell" and "bastard" are said all the time on TV shows here with no problem, not in kids shows though.WittyUsername wrote:I'm not sure how things are in New Zealand, but in America "shit" is considered a more serious curse word than "hell" or "bastard".LordCrumb wrote:I'm surprised most of you think 'Shit" is taking things too far..? Hmm, come to think of it, they did say "hell" in the old Muppet movies a few times...
Re: Swear words
"Shit" has become less and less taboo over time; most basic cable shows are allowed to say it after 9 PM. Of course, you're not going to hear it on a broadcast network like FOX or CBS, and definitely not in children's programming of the same ilk as Dragon Ball.
"Hell" and "bastard" are free game amongst adult programming on any channel. "Fuck" is for premium cable only, at least uncensored. I'm not sure of all the rules here; Dean Norris from Breaking Bad mentioned in an interview that AMC, the basic cable that aired the show, only allowed one "fuck" per season, and even then it has to be censored(uncensored on DVD? I haven't gotten around to collecting BrBa yet).
Pixar's Cars movie used "Hell" but that's a movie. I don't know if any TV airings have altered that line.

Re: Swear words
I remember Short Circuit 2 was able to get away with the F word. Kids movies like Warriors of Virtue, Little Monsters and Beetlejuice have said shit before. I find shit to be harmless compare to fuck in my opinion.

Re: Swear words
Whether or not swear words are offensive or not is extremely subjective, especially if you take into account what George Carlin once said on the subject; that there are no such things as "bad words"...bad thoughts, bad intentions, but there's nothing wrong with words in and of themselves.
The FCC, however, feels differently. It seems to be their job to censor things according to what the most easily-offended person would find offensive. I mean, they thought Freeza had genitals.

A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Re: Swear words
I'm not familiar with the others, but Beetlejuice wasn't really a kids movie. Sure, it had a spinoff cartoon for kids, but so did every popular 80s movie. I have heard there were edited home releases of the Beetlejuice movie with the swearing censored, though.Hellspawn28 wrote:I remember Short Circuit 2 was able to get away with the F word. Re: Swear words
Well my point is, using the word "shit" on Dragon Ball which is supposed to be a kid's show just doesn't seem right.B wrote:"Shit" has become less and less taboo over time; most basic cable shows are allowed to say it after 9 PM. Re: Swear words
The Funi Kai dub already swears too much, no need to punch it up with swears whose equivalents are never used in the Japanese to begin with.
Honestly, the mention of "cock" reminds me more of certain line-meshing youtube poops than something any serious anything would be saying.
Right there with you to a fair degree. I know it was pointed out in the manga review of awesomeness how awkward it was when Viz started swapping out potential curses for "NO!" and exclamation points, but sometimes those work just as well as the fourth "damn" in the last five minutes. I don't know, I'm sure some would argue it enhances the show under the "People swear like sailors under stress" clause, but that doesn't cover all of it either.

Re: Swear words
Swear words aren't adult, using em constantly is juvenile. Sure I'm okay if it's what was really said, but to add in swear words to be edgy is stupid.
Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!
