Swear words

Post by WittyUsername » Tue Jan 28, 2014 11:27 am

What would you think if Funimation started using words like "fuck", "cunt", and "cock", in the Kai dub for the Buu saga? I was pretty shocked when they had Guldo yell out "shit" during episode 29, so what if they started using other intense swear words?

It would be ridiculous and counter-productive. Dragon Ball is a kids' show through and through, and it makes zero sense to age it up that way. The characters do not speak with anything resembling that type of impoliteness/vulgarity in the original Japanese script. "Shit" is definitely on the edge of that, but can still work with phrases like "chikusho", and I'd argue that typical American culture has watered down the value level of "shit" and its vulgarity that it perhaps once had.

Adding "mature" language does not suddenly make it "mature", and you're driving away your actual audience's ability to enjoy it by doing so.

In conclusion, no-one should take any life lessons from Anime Labs.

I definitely agree with VegettoEX. As a dub fan I would be thrown off big time by them using those words. also what would be the point? Would it make them sound more ''Cooler?''

I think "damn" is the only word that should be OK to use in the DBZK dub. Anything higher than "damn" just sounds weird and distracting.

I agree, which is why I was thrown off by the brief use of the word "shit" in the dub.

Where in Dragon Ball would there even be context to use the word "cock?" The few times Goku is naked? Translating the various "you're a perverted old man" aimed at Kame Sennin as "you think with your cock"? The use of that word is very conscious and anything but natural.

It really makes you think about the peppered dialog throughout Kai. Nicktoons apparently airs "censored" versions, but going from Tanooki Kuribo's edit site, they're not as much "censored" as they are translation/script choices that are almost all valid.

Well, Goku did call Freeza a "Ruthless, Heartless Bastard" in the uncut scene for Kai's dub of the scene where Krillin dies. But, that's a fitting response, given his good friend was killed before him.

Well if those words are faithful translations of the original Japanese script, then sure. I only want swearing for the sake of accuracy, not swearing for the sake of swearing. As others have mentioned, the words mentioned in the opening post haven't been used in Dragon Ball yet, and being a kids show, I doubt they will.

Other than adding in random swear words just for the sake of being cool is not f****n' cool.

As long as it's only "Damn", "Hell" and "Bastard".

That was my conspiracy theory back in 1999 with "I'm a freakin' genius!" from Vegeta being "censored" to something else. Don't remember what. Probably just "I'm an absolute genius!"

It wasn't that it was "uncut", it was that they made something just for the sake of being able to make separate "uncut" and TV versions.

Haha, funny. I brought that up in a thread just the other day to illustrate the same reason. And, yeah, it was "friggin'" to "absolute". Hope that was worth the extra five bucks, kids!

I've never seen "Hell" as a curse. They actually said "Hell" on Nicktoons when they aired DBZ movie 12. I guess as long as you're talking about the place it's OK...?

I believe the "censored" version of that line was, "I'm a complete genius!"

There have been a number of times where I've preferred the censored dub script. Interestingly, many of the times I've preferred the censored script come from moments where they had to cut out references to death. When Freeza subtly implied he was going to kill someone, I think sometimes it came across as more creepy than when he flat-out stated he was going to kill someone.

I felt weird hearing even 'bastard' used in Kai.

Obviously that's a valid translation from the Japanese and I'm used to it in subtitles but it was weird watching the English dub for the first time since my childhood and hearing that.

I wouldn't want any unnecessary swearing added unless the translation made sense. It was bad enough watching a horrifically fansubbed version of the DBZ x One Piece x Toriko crossover and hearing Vegeta say 'motherfucker'.

As VegettoEX said, we don't need AnimeLabs resurfacing in dub form!

From what I understand, Nicktoons apparently didn't bother to edit any of those movies. But regardless of whether or not you consider "Hell" to be a curse word, it's not a word you can use on children's shows in the United States. That's why the word "heck" is often used in it's place.

I'm fine with the use of 'damn', 'hell', and 'bastard' since, while they are curse words, they're not really...well, they are offensive I suppose, but they're not really that high level of a curse worse, I guess. Bastard can be, but it's also pretty applicable to some of the situations it could be used in, but I wouldn't want them to go overboard with it either.

Now as far as 'shit' goes, it never distracts me. I'm actually kind of curious if it's viewed as that bad of a curse word in Texas or not. I'm just a state over, and where I live the word is treated just barely above the likes of 'damn' or 'crap'. You wouldn't want little kids saying it, and you might not want to say in front of your parents if they were really conservative maybe, but overall it's never been seen as all that awful of a word here.

I thought the 'cursing' in the Kai dub felt forced as it is. With the word "damn" in particular, it felt like they were trying to squeeze it in at every moment possible for the purpose of making it appeal to 12 year olds who are starting to feel embarrassed about still watching a silly cartoon. Having words like "fuck" and "cunt" would just come off as plain unnatural. Even the one instance of "shit" that they used, didn't even sound like "shit". He kinda trails off at the end, like he's gonna run out of the booth and have a giggle with his mates afterwards.

In conclusion..."Don't piss off the god of love."
