Kai Episode 99 (06 April 2014)

I was following along in the manga. The episode adapted 421 through 423 and the first two pages of 424 practically to the letter, with maybe two or three tiny scenes of additional dialogue.

Can't decide how I feel about the colours. They were always different in the Buu arc compared to the previous ones but after all the green tint talk from the previews, I'm struggling to judge here. That first shot of Gohan in the album is very green.

+The new opening song sounds fun. Also, bonus points for somehow getting both the English words "gorgeous" and "dance" into said opening somehow. XD
=Ending song is ok, feels a bit repetitive, but not bad.
=Also kinda neutral on Videl's new voice.
+But that "jiiiiii" stare of hers did make me laugh.
+I agree with posts above that Nozawa did a fantastic job.
-The Goten and Trunks fusion ending in Videl.... o_O
+But the second eyecatch gets a few points for having Gokû and Vegeta pulled across the diagonal dividing bar

-The scene where Bulma first appears in the ep looked a little greener than I remember it being

-The poor animation in the opening and ending actually made me grateful the whole thing isn't like that; the lack of budget made me appreciate the talent and whatever budget Z had during its run.
=That totally feels like reused BOG CGI from the city
+The Goku-in-the-shadows at the tail end of the ed reminds me of one of the early BOG ads. I don't think it's the same drawing though.

Funi hasn't said anything about simulcasting this, have they? I won't be able to make it next week.

Also, I couldn't find this shot from the trailer anywhere. Did they accidentally air a wrong opening or something?

Bit of a shame something like that wasn't stabilised. I guess it's better than splicing in one of those horrible redrawn scenes though!

I wonder how many more instances of that we'll see.

My guess is that it was caused digitally. As I stated, the jitter perfectly syncs with Videl's mouth flaps, which means that they might have manually set an inappropriate reference point or maybe it's a side effect of an automatic stabilizing filter.

Oh, I see. For some reason I thought you were saying they'd extended the mouth flaps to fit in an extra line or two and that had resulted in excessive jitter that would have otherwise been unnoticeable originally.

Just for the record, Satoshi Motoyama is actually listed first as Audio Director in the episode credits, and Yukio Nagasaki is second. So take that for what it's worth.

Also, I don't really know what to say about the Ending. I like the Opening, but the Ending doesn't feel very Dragon Ball-like at all. It seems to follow the format of a Naruto Ending more than anything. Maybe it'll grow on me over time, but it just doesn't have that upbeat DB energy or enthusiasm.

I can't believe we got another episode of Kai it's so surreal. I really liked the opening and ending songs however the animation for both was meh. I didn't see any digitally retraced scenes which isn't a bad thing just something to make note of. I'll give the musical score a couple of more episodes before commenting on it. All in all I'm incredibly excited for more Kai, I'm liking the pacing, voice acting, and the remastering.

The opening looked a bit stiff and lazy (due to aforementioned animation issues, like the BOG city scene), but I like the ending better.

The episode preview sounds very outdated and weird.

Well, it was originally being produced exclusively for an international market. Maybe that's why they didn't put as much effort into it.

(I mean, DBKai didn't have a lot of effort being put into it anyway, but you know )
