I wouldn't call it the worst then. It's just a different style of translation: one that I'd never use outside of documentaries (and using the original audio, never a dub), but a different style anyway.

Whoever translated the series into French is the one to blame for the dialogues in most European dubs. Their usage-non usage of the name "Kakarot" (which lead to the term "Sperm Whale" IIRC) was so bad that a few other dubs left it out almost entirely.

Only the beginning and the end of sentences
I've tried to concentrate on the French dialogue while the Polish narrator translated and the sound was so low that I couldn't understand anything.

Well, yes and no. Voiceover is used almost exclusively in Poland (only like in the past 10-15 years the trend to use subs for actor movies and dubs for children movies has really started but it's still far from universal) but in the case of DB/Z/first 2/3 of GT it was done using the French voices as a base (the last part of GT somehow managed to get aired using the original Japanese version as a background). As to the translation: yes, the French (AB Group - more precisely "Club Dorothée") version is to blame. But the Polish localization was done so carelessly that what little consistency in nomenclature remained in French, it was discarded by the Polish translators (for example Kamehameha is "shock wave of the Genius Turtle", "shock wave of the ancients" [just what?], "highest power", "kameha wave" [yes, that's quite ok], "kameamea" [I guess the logic here was "the French don't pronounce the "h"? Ok, so it should be read without them.], "dispersion through light" [yes, that's as silly as it seems], "magic power come forth" [it sounds a lot like Sailor Moon, doesn't it?] and I probably have forgotten quite a few others). Heck, Goku is in Polish changed to "Songo" (you know: take "SonGoku" and cut the "ku" off - why? No idea.).

Oh, and my favourite example: #16 talks about himself: "I am constructed out of nothing and it makes me strong".

Want me to try to remember more?

Yes, there are multiple French dubs. The good one is the new Kai one. The bad one is the AB Group one.

It's not like the French terminology was very consistent to begin with anyway. "Shock Wave of the Ancients" must have been taken from the German dub. IIRC, the name was "Schock Welle der Alten Ahnen".

The Spanish dub was based off the French dub too, and we got quite a few names for the Kamehameha as well: the most usual one was "Vital Wave" (which, arguably, sounds good) but there were a few instances of "Kamehame Wave", one of "Infinite Light" (after the infamous French Lumière Infinie), and even one of "Kaito Technique" (Kaio-Ken).
Luckily, the new film threw all those names to the bin.

Is there any information about who translated the series to French? I'd gladly read about it: it must make a really interesting story.

It's the same VAs. The Kai version is the best in terms of voice acting.

Tzizgi have you seen Polish release of Movie 12? Because it got a real dubbing- translation problems still stands, but VA was really better than I remember- nice mix of veterans and new voices. Makes me wonder what could have been, had RTL7 not cut the corners, use JPF manga transaltion and hire real actors. Believe me, it will make you regret that Vegeta didn't speak with voice of Borys Szyc.

About French AB- again the transaltion was low point, but acting itself was pretty decent. I feel it's really unfair to say that it's the worst one.

I have seen, I have written about it, I have been really unhappy that the series didn't get such a treatment. But this is beside the point - in this topic we compare different dubs, not only the best and the most recent, so I can easily mention the RTL7 atrocity ;)

The voiceover I described earlier aired on a channel called RTL7.

Polish situation was surprising considering that Sailor Moon (which aired earlier) used original Japanese voices and no one complained, the series was a massive hit.

The serbian dub. Reminds me of Tommy Wiseau's acting in "The Room".

I would have to say that the Greek dub is the worst. As Gonstead on the Skype chat said...

its kinda sad"
