I agree with his anaolgy, that is EXACTLY why shows like SM, DB, Pokemon and Yu Gi Oh, (depsite their enormous popularity in the country from which they originated among fans of all ages even in animated form, which is a tough task) are rejected in the US. He`s absolutely right.

But... I strongly disagree that the Naruto merchandise is overwhelming. It is enjoying its popularity, but there is no question that OP makes it its lowly bitch.

And why will OP suffer in America? "Because it looks like Disney and the animation sucks!" Well screw me and call me Susan! That means that everything Osamu Tezuka did should "suck" as well I suppose.

I really cannot stand the overwhelming majority of US Japanese animation fans.

I agree with you omae about One Piece. I personally think that if it gets on T.V. here it will flop. I know that it's not the most popular title in Shonen Jump. As a matter of fact, I remember a few months back I happened to be checking out Shonen Jump's website and they had the results of a survey ranking their current titles in order of popularity. One Piece was second last, only being beaten for last place by Sandland. And that's a real shame. It is without question to me one of the best, most adventurous, most imaginative, and unique series out there right now.

I have this feeling that One Piece will be taking a ride back-seat to Naruto, Kinda like Yu Yu Hakusho to Dragonball Z.

Anyway, whatever, anything I wanted to say has already been said, which is not a bad thing, not at all.

I would imagine though, the Op for One Piece would be different for TV broadcast, assuming it even stays in there.

Personally, I think Naruto's battles are a lot quicker than DBZ, Anime that is. Now manga, while thats a different story. Naruto's fights last a whole what, two episodes? Naruto vs Neiji was barely two. Although the current scenario Orochimaru vs the Third, Naruto/Sasuke vs Gaara, is currently the longest fight in the anime. Reason being, its also one of the major fights series. Just wait untill the anime catches up with the manga, then you can complain about the fights dragging out. If the whole Freeza v Goku in 5 minutes thing was directed by the Naruto guys, it would actually have ended in 5 minutes, not 5 episodes later.

I will agree however, that the Naruto manga is getting a bit long in the tooth. There currently seems to be no solution to the Sound nin vs the Leaf Gennin.

Oh, and as for One Piece, i completely agree with NeverRamza. I had that same situation, except i couldnt get past the first 5 episodes.

I'm guilty of being elitist in some ways (you should hear my Final Fantasy rant...). For some things I almost can't help but be "hardcore" and get into it heavily, but not every single thing (I do have casual interests!). But I try not to let it bug me so much that other people don't feel the same way that I do; everyone should be allowed to be a fan in their own way, so long as they don't prevent anyone else from enjoying their fandom.

But I'm not perfect. Sometimes I don't follow my own rule and say not-so-nice things.

Nothing beats Chrono Trigger.

Well, anyway, I think it's not so much the overhypedness that makes people dislike DBZ so much, but also the fact it has become ''cool'' in the elite anime circles to dislike DBZ. If you like DBZ, you're a loser. If you despise DBZ and live and breathe Love Hina, you're the greatest person ever. Hating DBZ is ''hip'' and ''cool''.

The fact some people even go so far as to pretend to dislike DBZ, just so they get liked by other anime fans, even though they really like it. It pisses me off.

And I don't really give a damn what people say about One Piece... It's the greatest manga ever for me, point. From the first volume on I got hooked... And I've yet to loose interest in it. I'm glad I managed to get some of my US friends hooked on it as well. It simply took a little portion of the manga, and a collection anime box from eBay, and bang, they're now some of the biggest OP fans there are. It's just proof of how great it is.

Though still nothing can beat Dragon Ball... Even if it is nostalgia.

I only started reading One Piece a month or so ago, after hearing Mike praise it to death. I quite liked it. Enough to pick up the second graphic novel, which I also liked. But whenever I check for the third one in my local shop-o-import-nerd-stuff, it's not there. And I get more and more annoyed each time. I want more Luffy, damnit. I know have to click closed threads whenever anyone talks about it, to avoid anyone accidently spoiling the story for me.

Is the third graphic novel even out? If so, what number are they up to?

Yes, I forgot about Chrono Trigger. Love that one too! :) And Dai, you do know that that collection anime box of One Piece off of E-bay is a bootleg right?

Some book stores don't care about release dates and release them as they get 'em. I bought volume 4 of Gravitation several days before it was supposed to come out.

Cool. What number are they up to in Japan (assuming that the US Shonen Jump ones are equivalent)?

Also, roughly how far ahead are the stories currently being printed in the US Shonen Jump? What year are they from?

And yet, I'd hardly call Love Hina a masterpiece! Narrow-minded snobs! :x I like Love Hina and some parts are really funny, plus it stars one of my favourite seiyuus, Ueda Yuji, but I'd never put it on a level with Miyazaki or Oshii. :?

You said some of that stuff already... But, how could you forget CT? Makes me want to cry...

I only follow OP in SJ, so I haven't seen Chopper...

Right now, I'm only just getting into .hack//SIGN. What with all that Tsubasa, and stuff.

In Shonen Jump right now, they're at Chapter 35, with the fight against Captain Kuro and his Black Cat pirates on Usopp's island. And wait till you meet Chopper, although that won't be for a while, Sanji hasn't even yet been introduced. Anyway, he's just sooooo awesome, and his voice in the anime is done by Otani Ikue, the voice of Pikachu. As you can tell, I have a big Chopper problem. :D

In Japan, OP is up to around chapter 316 or so. At least, that's what the people over at http://www.ToriyamaWorld.com tell me.
Also, roughly how far ahead are the stories currently being printed in the US Shonen Jump? What year are they from?
I'm assuming you mean "behind" and not "ahead"... in which case, very. I'm guessing that the arc they're currently on is from 1998 or 1999, but I really don't know for sure.
