Future Trunks is the most tragic character in the entire franchise

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Shaggy Dog Story incarnate.
My problem is that Trunks has gone from a character who personified hope to a character who personifies hopelessness. Through all his best efforts his destiny in the universe is to ultimately fail and end in tragedy. The issue is for the past few decades we all felt his character represented that hope and the ability to overcome yet we find now that he's nothing more that a victim of circumstance and that his hope was ultimately foolish as the universe was out to get him on a personal level no matter what he did.

I don't agree with you. More than ever I see Trunks as the personification of "Hope"
He has never lost it even after all the shit he's been through. In the end he lost everything but still goes to another timeline with Mai, with the hope of finally finding peace.

He's the best written character of the show, and is the only one who has to suffer some consequence and can't rely on Dragon Balls.
