I don't think anyone credits Toonami solely for anime becoming popular in the west (we all can thank Akira and Ghost in the Shell for that ) but your can't deny Toonami played a huge part in igniting the anime craze especially when yours truly aired on it.Hellspawn28 wrote:I feel like the original Toonami was overrated to begin with. Sure they had some good anime, but people act like it was the best thing ever. People act like Toonami started the anime fandom in the US despite the fact that anime was already big before 1997/1998. Any video store that sold VHS tapes had anime and you could find anime on Sci-Fi or even HBO before 1998-1999. It seems like most people who watch Toonami had no idea about anything else that was not on CN. The anime that was being release on home video when Toonami was airing was not aim to them. I feel like around 2004 was when the CN/Pokemon anime fandom generation took over the past generation.
I personally like the anime block on Adult Swim, G4's Anime Unleashed, Starz and both Sci-Fi anime blocks better than Toonami. I give the new Toonami credit for airing Seinen like Parasyte and old classic anime movies like Akira. Having Jojo on Toonami is really cool too.

Haven't we already gotten these in GT? Goku dies, the DBs go away, and the Namekian DBs most likely won't be used again because of the Evil Dragons.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

Of course anime existed before and aside from Toonami, but Toonami exposed a whole array of kids to it. First of all, G4's (and Tech-TV's before it) Anime Unleashed block came after Toonami (if I recall correctly). Second of all, not every kid on the block had Starz or HBO. Third of all, not every kid watched Starz or HBO. And Fourth of all, yeah lots of video stores sold VHS tapes of anime, but that doesn't mean that kids went into those stores and it certainly does not mean that they bought anything there.
Toonami is credited with exposing many to anime because it was a channel that many kids watched and it aired right after school, when kids would watch it. So regardless of what else existed, Toonami hit the audience with it. If something exists and not a lot of people see it, it still exists, but does anyone really care that it exists? Toonami made kids care that anime exists.
Plus, I'm not a huge anime fan, so I really don't care about that. Toonami was great. It had a whole different feel than anything else that was on TV from the presentation to the video packages to the "host," etc. Toonami could not be overrated because it did exactly what everyone says it did. I think Toonami is "rated" right where it belongs. You could have your opinions on it, but that doesn't mean that it didn't do everything that people claim it did.
Also, just to point out, lots of things in television changed, but how many television channels, concepts, etc. were so popular that they were resurrected years later due to fan requests? That says a lot.

Basically because they spammed their biggest hitters in one shot, & allowed very little room in the schedule to grow smaller shows' popularity. JJBA &/or HxH would work easily between Kai & Super, & DB was always going to smash no matter what (unless, say, they put it in the 2-3AM area). In the current scenario, people can easily just watch DB & turn off when that's done. If they put smaller shows in between, that'd grow all the shows' audiences, & the blocks' viewership overall.8000 Saiyan wrote:Why is it a terrible idea to air Kai and Super back-to-back?
In DB's case, that's because there was such possibility of the TV airing. Lupin III Part 4, for example was also held back from announcements, & tons of localized Lupin has never aired. There's no reason to assume that DBS was only ever going to get localized based on the TV airing. If it got passed around & (by some miracle) no one wanted it, I'm reasonably certain that Toei would still like to localize it (again, it's a product, if they have ways of gauging demand & have a reasonable demand, they will sell it). As for any misunderstandings or being taken out-of-context, I apologize if I've ever rubbed you the wrong way. Some issues (weirdly, dubs are one of these) are a trigger of sorts for me & I do get upset when people discuss them either callously or dismissively. I feel like there should probably be an academic discussion on anime VO (dubs included) on YT or such, & ppl should probably be educated in the way that ppl basically understand how licensing & anime production in general works.Jinzoningen MULE wrote:As far as we're aware, the reason Boo Kai was held back for so long was due to the fact that it hadn't aired on TV yet. It's reasonable to assume that was a demand Toei made, and I guarantee that Super is being localized under similar arrangements. I'm not talking about every other anime ever, and on a more personal note, I'm not a fan of you consistently taking me out of context on this forum. If you feel it necessary to act that way, please leave me out of it. Thanks.huzaifa_ahmed wrote:Uh...if that were the case, then 99% of anime wouldn't be localized. Non-Japanese TV only has so much space for anime, & yet there's still hundreds of anime being localized
I think the gripes you've had with me are basically on this subject, & again, I apologize if I've said rude & untoward things to you, Jinzoningen MULE. I really appreciate your honesty & passion on the property, & I hope we can get along.
