What would the general consensus be if Dragon Ball GT was announced today?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

It's easier when you consider GT, unlike Dragon Ball, was the result of multiple people involved in making it.
Series' composer Aya Matsui probably (HOPEFULLY) wrote most the actual story and the creepy-ass Pan shit came from one of the male higher-ups/writers. Or at least, that's what I hope.
I assume the creepy shit was added by the specific episode writers in charge of each episode. I believe that it was Morishita Kouzou who said in an interview that when the series was first being conceptualized they came up with a half year's worth of stories to do first, and I would assume that that was basically amounting to "Matsui will oversee the writers, but let them do whatever they want." Like, Morishita seemed like a pretty misogynistic producer, so I really wouldn't be surprised if Matsui basically didn't have any say in nixing the lolicon bullshit that the male writers wanted to toss into there. Matsui only wrote Episodes #1-3, #7-10, #13, #16 and #21-22 herself before taking maternity leave, so my guess is that and of the grosser material was devised by the male writers or on orders from Series Director Kasai Osamu.

This does, unfortunately, mean that Matsui wrote that exhausting trans panic episode, though.
There are no good people here then. Only the "Lesser evils".

"Listen, if this dumb motherfucker doesn't go 'Well, I could end the threat right now... But I won't, because I'm a Saiyan!" once in this entire show, then I will unironically declare GT better than Z."

I assume watching Super first would've only intensified that feeling.
Imagine my happiness when I saw him declaring in GT that spending time with his family was more important than fighting.
Anti-Toriyama? Yes, I don't give a shit. GT Goku all the way, baby.
Ill even go a step further and say that GT Vegeta is a better interpretation of the character than anything Toriyama did after the Buu arc.

I can sort of excuse it, given it was ripping off a previous story (Oolong), but either way, hope she grew out of it and didn't become a J.K. Rowling.

I have my issues with it in the original comic, too, but I was hoping better from a woman to fragratly use gendered violence like that for a gag. Like, this shit is the reason why women like me have to watch how we dress, lest we invite ridicule and less savory forms of harm. It's just exhausting and embarrassing to see a woman basically repeating tasteless shit like that.

My only other major experience with Matsui Aya as a writer is via her work in the AniPoke stuff over the years. I'm very fond of her excellent work on Pocket Monsters: Sun & Moon, and her general writing of female characters throughout that franchise, although it doesn't seem like she ever had to write queerness directly to my knowledge.

After doing some Twitter research I found that on 2022.02.26 Matsui replied to—and follows—transgender politician and former actress Yoda Karen. This makes me feel more comfortable about Matsui having either learned and improved since 1997. Matsui appears to be a fan of queer stories, so this is pretty exciting, and also explains the Sapphic vibes between Mao and Suiren in Pocket Monsters: Sun & Moon Episode #59, which was written by Miyata Yuuka.

Behold! Actual good news!

(According to her Twitter bio Matsui is remarried and has a child with disabilities, so she seems pretty deadset on not being ashamed of things that might be considered cultural taboos to be open about).

Lets be honest, Aya Matsui was fired because EW WIMMIN..
Do you have any tangible proof of this or is this just wild internet speculation? Since you're prefacing it with "Let's be honest", I'd think you have something serious to back up that claim.

Dont forget when Goku saw a goddamn sewer fan, and thought "Curses! I cant escape my enemy by destroying that fucking fan with my power that can destroy mountains even at base saiyan level"

I used to like GT but now I like it less and less. The only kind thing I have to say about it is that Telefuturo aired GT for the first time in Paraguay before Cartoon Network did...and on hindsight that was not a good thing.

Do it like everyone else: Say you like the ideas, but hate the execution.
I like GT's overall story and ideas for the franchise, but the episodes and the content on them themselves are hit or miss, especially after Baby.

I would say there is one scene that is amazing idea, amazing execution.Freeza sees Gohan as an adult, remembers how much he stomped on Gohan as a kid and then adult Gohan DEFEATS HIM WITH ONE SINGLE PUNCH

EDIT: Wait, no, that wasnt GT. False Alarm, sorry everyone.

Also, back in the day, when we were ignorant children with no access to the Internet, we had no idea what the concept of "canon" was.
We didn't know Dragon Ball was being written by a certain specific person instead of a whole company and what that meant for the show.
It would get lambasted from the get-go for the simple fact Toriyama wasn't writing it (and no, I don't consider the reaction to Daima to mean anything, because a lot of Daima's initial hate reeked of "It's GT again, so it's gonna suck.")
Many of had access to the Internet as a kid. I knew about GT during my early days of being a Dragon Ball fan and knew about the bad rep it had fans. I feel like GT would be just as much dislike now as it was back in the 90s. Considering the show had issues with the writing and Goku being the main star for everything.

Right, I feel like people forget (or were too young to remember) how prolific and widespread the internet was in the early 2000s just because we didn't have the internet on our phones yet. I was reading summaries of the Boo saga and GT before either made their debut to American television.

I'd wager the reason you see so many hardcore dub fans using SSJ, despite it making no fucking sense as far as the Funimation dub goes, is because that abbreviation was fucking everywhere in early 2000s internet and they had that shit engrained in their brain since they were 9

It's also probably one of the reasons power level discourse has had a stronghold on the fandom, those list were everywhere on Dragon Ball Z fansites in the aughts

The Internet was a thing and it was influential during the early 2000s, but on a much smaller scale. The growth of social media, Reddit, YouTube etc has made it easier to push certain narratives. Like I was aware in 2004/2005 GT was somewhat divisive and loved as the other two series, but only vaguely. The criticisms were far more tame than what I've heard being said about Super in this far more interconnected world we live in.

Hell, I don't remember hearing much complaints about the once maligned Star Wars prequels at the time, it was only a few years after they wrapped up that the vitriol was much more noticeable, and of course we all know how things went down with The Last Jedi (which I personally loved).
Do you have any info about international non-English broadcasts about the Dragon Ball anime or manga translations/editions? Please message me. Researching for a future book with Dragon Ball scholar Derek Padula

Dragon Ball GT was unpopular if you entered into Dragon Ball spaces to discuss Dragon Ball. The Star Wars prequel trilogy was unpopular within Star Wars circles, as well. Social media expanded the interconnectivity of the internet, so it really isn't a surprise that by the 2010s you were see sentiments from specific fandom spaces now becoming a part of a homogenized pop culture discussion space that spread across the major platforms.

If GT we’re announced today, I imagine it would’ve gotten a more extreme reaction compared to Daima, although I guess it might depend. In this hypothetical scenario, did the Dragon Ball franchise more or less go dormant after the DBZ anime ended?

At his core Zamasu is good like Shin, though I guess you could say he was so fastidious that it backfired. But you know, for this "Future Trunks Arc" you had to depict Zamasu and Trunks' inner conflict, right? If this was back when I was drawing the manga myself then I doubt if I could have done it. I mean, I'm not very good at depicting the characters' psychology on the page. So this all came together because now I only have to think up the story. [...] On my own, I doubt I would have been able to express Zamasu's fall to the dark side.

Super is hardly hared and GT is hardly held in high regard.

Like memes like this one

are the norm. Outside of niche internet forums Super gets probably the most love out of the non-Z. More GT fans are coming out the woodwork but the common opinion is still "GT sucks lol"

I know no one here wants to hear about my obsession with tv deals and broadcasts. But its pretty telling most tries to reair GT have resulted in the channel souring on anime entirely and dropping it. Nicktoons, which used to air Kai a ridiculously high amount of times to pretty much giving up on anime entirely after ONE RUN OF GT. Even Grupo Vierci dropped it from Telefuturo, so now all Telefuturo does is air Z and when Z is done then air Super and when Super is ok you all get my point now. And then came La Tele which aired OG Dragon Ball 3 times per weekday morning and then aired GT and suddently the block started getting cut(One GT airing per weekday morning too) until it ceased entirely. The only day it airs now is Saturday and I think it just airs Dreamworks cartoons now. (The Dreamworks cartoons also aired with the anime block.)

We can all argue until we are all blue about GT's worth and quality but the reality is Even total newbies to anime/Casual audiences LOATHE IT. And a show that cant attact new viewers IS DEAD.
