Unfortunately not at all uncommon among Japanese franchises, at least the TWO about which I care most: Dragon Ball and Godzilla.Vegeta th3 4th wrote: Fri Mar 14, 2025 6:59 pmIt's such a shame that a franchise this big can only be properly experienced through a fan project.Dragon Ball Ireland wrote: Fri Mar 14, 2025 6:47 pmI would be okay with them, if the video tracks were just Funimation's raws or colour corrected Dragon Box, like the Seed of Might releases.
I'm sadly unsure which has fared worse on home video, actually.
The Dragon Ball releases that crop the image are atrocious, but recent Godzilla releases have done the opposite, and include TOO MUCH of the original image, and as such on every single shot transition (not SCENE transition, SHOT transition) you can see the splice lines from when the film was glued together. It makes night time sequences seizure-inducing. Also, Toho has gone about trying to erase the dubs from existence, and at least the Funi releases contain multiple audio options. However, Godzilla does have one BANGER release, being the Criterion release of the original film, which has a ton of features, the best transfer of the movie ever, and a lot of care put into it (sadly, Toho swooped in and jacked up every future Criterion release of the Godzilla franchise).
In either case, fan restorations are the best option, sadly.
