Do you think of the color scheme for a character’s clothes and body when drawing them in black and white?

Yeah, that’s right, but I don’t do it consciously. When I’m applying the color, I think “It was more or less this color”. However, with people that I’ve already drawn in color before, I generally don’t go back and check, so sometimes I end up using different colors than I did before. (laughs)
It's really as simple as he colored characters from memory rather than referring to his old drawings. It isn't just Bluma's hair, either. A lot of characters would change color over the years, like Dodoria being yellow or Kibito being blue on the Kanzenban covers.

Yeah this sounds about right haha 😅
He literally just colored characters from memory mostly
I wonder why he didn’t recheck the colors though 🤔 maybe bc he was having fun with his guessing game of the colors lol

I think he’s implying here jokingly that Bulma just simply dyes her hair bc “with women it’s very common place”
Although he’s mostly joking he’s got a point there and it would make perfect sense in universe why her hair keeps changing colors

My head canon hair color for Bulma will always be turquoise though bc that’s the first hair color we see her with and it was used for the entirety of the original anime trilogy of DB/Z/GT

I don’t get why it’s so important that Trunks has the same hair color as Bulma. If anything, giving him purple hair while Bulma has blue hair helps make the reveal that he’s her son less obvious. If you want to argue that there needs to be realistic genetics in Dragon Ball of all things, you can just say that Trunks inherited his purple hair from his grandfather.

I find it especially baffling that Toei tried to have it both ways by giving Future Trunks blue hair while leaving Kid Trunks’ hair purple like it’s always been. What was the point?

I always saw Brief's hair as more white/gray, like it only became that color due to his age. Sometimes it's bluish.

Well, the obvious answer is because that's the intent.

Nothing is spoiled. His hair is as much a giveaway as his jacket. And the reveal that he's from the future (and therefore anyone's son) is done in the very same chapter where he's revealed to be Bulma's son.

The visual concept for Trunks is that he's basically supposed to look like Bulma turned into a boy but with Vegeta's eyes.
The first part is obvious when seeing any artwork with Bulma and Trunks together, and it's even more obvious when their haircuts are alike like in the Boo arc.
The second part is directly stated in dialogue.

So if you take Bulma and turn her into a Vegeta-eyed boy, purple hair stays purple and blue hair stays blue.
To me, it's part of the visual concept that they have the exact same color as you're supposed to basically be able to think "that's Bulma as a male warrior" when looking at Trunks.

I love that the color manga kept that guideline, to the point that the Super manga even gives Kid Trunks blue hair to match his future self and his mother, something that Toyotaro had already understood on the covers, and something that the Super remaster/remake will apparently fail to do judging by the trailer. But I get it: the designs have to remain the same because they're the ones available in the various side products like games and they must remain relevant with the release of the Super remaster/remake. You don't want to have Kid Trunks with blue hair in the new version when it's the classic lavender hair that's featured on the various games and figurines right now.

Anyway, I'm on the team that Trunks and Bulma should have the same hair color, as intended by the author. But when they don't, well they don't, I'm not gonna be rubbed the wrong way everytime there's a screen of purple-haired Kid Trunks, it just becomes usual with time even though I do enjoy the Super manga colors showing him with blue hair even as a kid.

It may have been the intent, but Toriyama intended lots of things that didn’t ultimately stick. As for Trunks’ jacket, Capsule Corp is supposed to be a massive company. Trunks wouldn’t exactly need to be related to Bulma to be associated with the company.

I’m not even saying you can’t give them the same hair color. I just think it’s dumb that Toei tried to have their cake and eat it by keeping Kid Trunks’ hair purple and not bothering to address the discrepancy. In terms of the argument that they kept his hair the same because that’s how the character is represented in games and merchandise, the same applies to Future Trunks. Everyone was used to him having purple hair for over 20 years.

This one does. Even when he plays around with the colors, he consistently has them both with the same color, because that's the intention.

Same with the hair color. And without the knowledge that he came from the future, there's zero reason to assume Bulma is his mother.

So one way or the other, nothing is spoiled.

This. The discrepancy is entirely on the anime's side of things.

Exactly ! I like that it was originally way more subtle that they’re related with only the blue eyes being the same
Plus the blood relation is already there like you said with Trunks having his grandfather’s hair color so there was literally no need to change it !
The new fans who have only seen Super so far aren’t stupid bc it’s obvious enough already with Kid Trunks so changing Future Trunks’ hair color was completely pointless!

Even if they changed his hair so people can tell them apart it’s still a stupid reason bc it’s obvious enough with the age and height difference! 🙄
Like I said the fans aren’t stupid !
Even 5 year olds can tell them apart !

Is the canon explanation just that Future Trunks dyed his hair or that his hair just darkened when he got older ??? 🤷🏻‍♀️
It bugs that heck outta me bc it literally makes no sense !
They kept Future Trunks’ from Z’s hair the same color in all the post Super video games so why not just keep it the same in the series ??? I just don’t get it 🤦🏻‍♀️

Most of the time it looks like a light lavender or light lilac to me but yeah depending on the lighting I guess it does look a bit more light blue sometimes

I personally never saw Trunks as a male version of Bulma
I see him more as a blend between Bulma and Vegeta in terms of looks with him having his own personality being like neither one of theirs
If anyone is a Bulma clone it’s Bulla / Bra

Sure original Z Trunks has Bulma’s eye color and straight hair type but that seems to be the only thing they have in common as their personalities at least Future Trunks’ personality is completely different than Bulma’s vain and selfish one

I think the Vegeta genes show the most imo with Trunks sharing the same skin tone and Saiyan power and abilities

Also no offense but I’m tired of blue haired anime characters in general bc there’s just too many imo
I like there to be more variety with hair colors even if characters are related
Mix it up a bit you know ?
For example they could have given Bulla or Trunks black hair instead like Vegeta or given either one of them blonde hair like their grandmother
Like maybe blonde for Trunks and black for Bulla ?

Anyway I vastly prefer Trunks’ original lavender/lilac hair color not only bc I think it looks best on him but bc it’s a more varied hair color with the Briefs’ family gene pool of hair colors

The canon explanation is that Future Trunks ALWAYS had blue hair, since Bulma asks young Trunks if the boy inside the machine has blue hair, showing that it's how she remembers Future Trunks.

Plus, the flashback of Future Gohan's death shows that Future Trunks already had blue hair back then.

So there's no hair dye or natural change of tint over time, there's just "Future Trunks actually had blue hair even when Future Gohan was still alive in his timeline and we just failed to show it all along Z", followed by the same "whoops, he actually had blue hair" for Kid Trunks once he appears in Super Hero (a mistake the manga doesn't make since Kid Trunks has blue hair right from Super's start).

And games just shy away from "correcting" designs the fans are used to, they would never make Z Trunks having blue hair despite it being logical because it would contrast with the players' memories, much like they'll never make DBS Trunks' hair purple since it doesn't match the look fans are used to, no matter what's more logical or illogical.
Fans are already upset when they choose to use Shintani's style rather than good-old-Z style for various characters, so going as far as changing some colors would cause quite an uproar, no matter the logic involved or not.
The last thing developers want (and perhaps something they are simply forbidden to do by the rightholders) is to update a look in anyway and make it NOT match with what you can see in some episodes of the source material.

Now if I were Toei, I would have taken the opportunity with the new "DBS Blue" version of the show to correct the mistake of showing Kid Trunks with lavender hair, which would have brought full consistency within Super with all Trunks having the intended blue hair all along Super, and match the fact that "DBS Blue" tries to a bit closer to the manga.
But again, I think the reason is just that side products like games feature lavender-haired Kid Trunks, and they want designs to stay relevant even when the new version of the series comes out. So again, Kid Trunks will likely switch to blue hair suddenly when he gets to high school.

Sure that’s the in universe explanation of Toei trying their damn hardest to explain the hair color inconsistency
“Can’t tell the 2 Trunks apart ???
Well , now Future Trunks has blue hair also bc Toriyama just felt like changing it AGAIN!”

Since WHEN though was it ever officially stated by Toriyama that Trunks’ hair was originally intended to be blue in Z anyway ???

In almost all the colored manga artwork Trunks hair is some shade of purple
It’s only on Volume 32 (Volume 16 in English) that it is a shade of blue and like 2 artworks that Toriyama was clearly just experimenting with the colors as we all know he’s infamous for

It wasn't meant to be blue in Z, it was quite obviously meant to be purple just like his mother, with only a few exceptions showing them as blue.

However, at some point, Toriyama stopped making Bulma's hair purple and - perhaps influenced when having to create artworks for select anime products and checking references - started to consistently make Bulma's hair blue, showing it was now how he considered the character to be in his mind, how he accepted that feature as part of the character.

And the thing is, when he started making Bulma's hair blue, with perhaps only one exception prior to Battle of Gods, he started to consistently make Trunks' hair blue as well: in his mind, the thing is simple, Trunks has Bulma's hair. When switching Bulma to blue consistently, he switched Trunks to blue consistently.

He updated his vision of how Trunks and Bulma's hair should be, but the anime apparently had to wait for several artworks to confirm it wasn't a one-off mistake but indeed how he consistently saw the characters now, similarly to Kaio Shin.
Shin had undoubtedly purple skin back then... but undoubtedly, consistently pink skin ever since the Perfect Edition, so they took their time but ended up correcting it for Daima too.

Took them decades to notice that Kinto-Un (Flying Nimbus) is purple rather than yellow in Toriyama's head too given how it's purple 95% of the time in his artworks, but it's only in Super Hero that they thought "whoops, perhaps Kinto-Un should actually be purple... and Kid Trunks' hair should actually be blue and Krilin's eyes should actually be white like the other characters and Piccolo's circle patches on his skin shouldn't be pink, all of this finally fitting with the author's vision of things, sometimes having been so for decades".

It seems the anime staff has trouble updating looks and retroactively changing them when the author does, Toriyama has to hammer in the fact that now he sees the characters like that with several artworks before the anime staff "oh, perhaps we should update it like the author does when he designs the character like this ten times in a row..." (the "ten times" being exaggerated here).

Meanwhile, the manga doesn't shy away from correcting things as needed from one series to the next or even from one arc to the next.
