You know what? This is quoted for truth, even though we're discussing the dub comparison. The English voice actors do make him sound villainous, but I must say once more that Drummond's voice did seem to adapt well to the change in character.MajinVejitaXV wrote:Horikawa is pretty awesome. This clip is pretty interesting to me because I haven't seen either dub version of that scene. First, I'll say the clip isn't totally legit, because there's a huge difference in the audio quality of the Ocean footage and the FUNi footage, like the FUNi footage came from a pretty crappy rip or something else happened to it.
Honestly, after having not seen either, I find both pretty distasteful. Once I discovered how awesome the Japanese version of the show was, I stopped watching the dub on TV sometime pre-Buu saga. Seeing this footage from the end of the series, it's just really disappointing to me to hear the same recycled Faulconer bgm in the FUNi dub and the Ocean bgm isn't any better.
To be on topic, I'll say that I while I do think the FUNi dub is better overall, Drummond will always be the English-speaking Vegeta that I remember from my days of watching the entire Saiyan saga several times through on Saturday mornings (and always getting my hopes up that this time through they would continue on to the new episodes (before I knew how TV worked)
)
Also, I was particularly grossed out by the Ocean dub at 2:54 in the clip (where a few characters let out a yelp at Vegeta's transformation) -- usually I would just laugh and chalk it up to a bad dub, but it was too offensive to even do that. I was relieved to see that FUNi left that part silent at 7:35 in the clip.

I for one will admit the Ocean version is very good, but still, FUNimation's dub is what I came to love the series with. Thanks to the kinda crappy dialogue and bad script, I prefer the original Japanese over even that, nowadays. But FUNi's dub still left an impression.
Put simply, when I imagine a conversation between Goku and Vegeta, it's Monsieurs Schemmel's and Sabat's voices I'm hearing in my head. 'Nuff said.

Yeah I suffer from the same "problem". Still I too love the Japanese cast and slowly the "damage" is being undone. However I still like the current dub cast (well most of them). I cannot justify that in any objective way because it simply comes down to opinion. I will state for the record though that the original cast is superior in every way according to my opinion (and it seems the majority here).SSj Kaboom wrote: Put simply, when I imagine a conversation between Goku and Vegeta, it's Monsieurs Schemmel's and Sabat's voices I'm hearing in my head. I'm still fond of my ol' Ocean dub (Both the Funi/Saban and UK/Canadian versions), Brain Drummond is still the man for me (the clip posted is an example why), and Brad Swaile was simply awesome as Teen Gohan and of course there are the other legends like Scott Mcneil, Ian Corlett, Saffron Henderson, and hell I still have a soft spot for Kirby Morrow' Goku (Watches Jerseymilk give me the evil eye
).
While I respect and enjoy the Japanese cast for their generally top-notch performances, and are undoubtly the best overall cast, I just have more affection for the Ocean cast.
With all that said, I'm more of a manga man, so I'm probably not as hung up on the voices as others.

"Problem?" "Damage?" I never said that. I don't mind associating their voices with the characters, even though I've come to watch the Japanese if given the choice. Only real reason for that is because the script is bad in the dub, not because I prefer one set of voice actors over another.Maphisto86 wrote:Yeah I suffer from the same "problem". To be fair, would many of you guys understand the Japanese version without subtitles. I like the the Ocean Group, so I lean more to them, maybe because they dubbed Gundam Wing.

Fully? No, but I can discern a decent amount. Besides, a great deal of the impact of voice acting comes from emoting and from believability, things which transcend actual language barriers.sharkdude0709 wrote:To be fair, would many of you guys understand the Japanese version without subtitles.
Horikawa sounds like an arrogant bastard with a hair-trigger, whereas Drummond (while enjoyable on other levels) can sound like a cartoony villian and Sabat sounds like he needs to ditch the Marlboro Reds.

Even if many of you guys like Sabit's voice, the translations are way off. The Ocean group had better translations and voice actors. Drummond has very many good qualities as does Sabit. Also did anyone forget about Ian Corlett? His interpretation of goku is great and doesn't scream as bad as Schemmel.
