I'm in that boat as well. I don't hate the Broli movies (actually, Movie 8 is the worst of them all, in my opinion...) and I really enjoy Movie 11 for Goten and Trunks and a variety of other things. I just...man, I don't see anything unique at all about Broli. Dr. Wheelo, Tullece, Cooler, Garlic Jr, they all had more personality than him. #13 kicked the thirteen shades of shit out of everyone flawlessly too, but hardly anyone talks about him.Ozma15 wrote:Me, I don't like the movies for Broli. I agree for the most part. I like all of the Broli movies, but not really Broli. This is the same with movie 13. It's my favorite movie, but Hildegarn is just a kinda boring villain.Duo wrote:I'm in that boat as well. Stemming off of what you've mentioned, I think that's part of my problem.Ex-Dubbie369 wrote:I agree for the most part. I like all of the Broli movies, but not really Broli. This is the same with movie 13. It's my favorite movie, but Hildegarn is just a kinda boring villain.
Hildegarn is nothing. He's just a giant monster, brought to life out of a crummy totem-pole/statue thing. He's not really the focus of the story, and is nothing more than a plot element with which to examine and discover the other characters.
But not Broli. He's the focus. We're even given a rather fleshed-out back story from which we're supposed to get a feeling of sympathy, and begin to identify with him a little bit. But he's just so... bland. They build all that up, and then smash it down with... a guy who... smashes... down... things.
I think it would have been interesting if Broli started having mental breakdowns during the courses of the movies (OK, not so much 11). Something like a dual personality, where he would occasionally snap "out" of his crazy self, come back to normal with an innocent look on his face, and maybe not even realize what he's been doing...? I mean, he's pretty warped... I could see that logically being a story progression for him.
Long story short, he's The Hulk 2 from Japan, and young boys like seeing things be smashed. That's why he's popular.

Well, in Movie 8, he wasn't THAT crazy, at least compared to his movie 10 self. He was nuts, sure, but a sadistic, and dare I say, a bit clever sort of nuts.

Well, he does start to lose control and attack Goku (and everyone else) when he's sleeping in Movie 8. It's not exactly a split personality thing, but I would have liked to see more of that in the other Broly movies instead of more of the smashy-smashy.VegettoEX wrote:I think it would have been interesting if Broli started having mental breakdowns during the courses of the movies (OK, not so much 11).
