Why do fans love Brolly so much?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Why do fans love Brolly so much?

This has always bugged the heck out of me. I've never understood the appeal of the character, but he seems to be extremely popular in the US.

The same reason Shadow the Hedgehog and Venom are populer. Emo angst filled god like creatures who have a mysterious pasts that just keep on whining about there own problems. Kids like angst and power I guess. Not to mention cool in the U.S most of the time is how "X-TREAME" something is therefore a large muscle bound moron who keeps shouting like he's part of NIN is bound to get the "X-TREAME" group of fans on his side.

Eh... pointless anti-emo hatred aside, people are fans of Broly for the same reason people are fans of Doomsday from Superman; he's pure rage and indestructible power and can't be killed... except y'know, for the two times in which he is killed ^_^;; (also like Doomsday!). He's like Chibi Buu, except instead of an annoying pink brat, he acts as an anti-thesis to Goku. Also, in movie 8, he has the most detailed backstory out of every movie villain.

Just to piss me off and take away from my ability to sleep at night. Broli fits every stereotype non-fans try to make about Dragonball Z, and then enhances it.

I think one of the podcast episodes said it best when they were talking about Trunks. He was a guy who wasn't around for that long, so when he actually left, people wanted to see more of him for the sake of finding out his story. Then again, Trunks actually does have his story explained, but I think by that time, his mysterious-ness already raked in a lot of fans.

But, I think in Broly's case, Duo's answer works best (sadly).

And to add another example into the mix, Matt from Death Note actually seems to have quite a number of fans (for some reason, I keep finding avatars of him). Though I think his reason for popularity is more like Trunks'--he was a cool, apparently badass, mysterious guy who wasn't around that long.

I don´t care for Broly, so I´m different than most American fans. However, I will say regarding NeptuneKai´s comment about Shadow, that Shadow actually has a PERSONALITY - Broly´s just a screaming idiot. Angsty characters can be interesting, but most of the time they´re just annoying. Especially when for some reason they are godly.

The best answers were already given, but out of ALL the DBZ characters I've shown to my roomate (Sailormoon fan), she instantly liked Broly the best. I guess his normal state is kind of attractive........... Er, anyway, I kinda liked how he got to go against all the other Super Saiyans. That kinda scenario is pretty appealing.

I pretty much agree. I can't stand Broli anymore. Granted I liked the 8th movie, but I'm sick & tired of the character already.

Well to me he was sort of like a myth. All my mates (including myself) believed there was actually a Brolly saga, which you can't really blame me considering there were three movies after him, yet there were no reviews on the web etc. So when I finally saw him in some grainy clip (movie 8 were Goku, Gohan and Trunks power up to SSJ) he became even more of a legend because of his huge musk-cles.

I like Broly because, well, he's the most thought out villain in the movies. He's got the most backstory and history and he's actually deep enough that the majority of fans think he's shallow. Plus, he's insane, and insane is cool.

I like Broly because of the concept of him. His appeal to me is derived from Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan. Not that I don't like the other two movies, it's just that his action sequences are backed up with a great origin rather than revenge/survival plots. The whole idea that he and his father are two saiyan survivors and outcasts (like Goku) is pretty cool to me. Alslo that he was ironically regected as well as survived because he is the super saiyan of legend is a cool concept.

The reason why Broly is not one of my favorite villians is because he is one of those insane, speachless villians that started to become popular in the Dragonball universe. This leads to repetative fighting and no named attacks. I like my villains to be smart and have an evil plan, Broly is just too crazy and destructive for no reason exept for the fact that he wants to kill Goku. I also disliked that in Broly: Second Coming they changed his green hair to gold. The fact that the legendary super saiyan has a differend super saiyan hair color is a cool idea to me also.

So all of the intense action, muscles, and explosions aren't what I like about Broly, it's his story.

Because....his power is maximum? O_o

I honestly have no idea. I personally can't see the appeal. He's just a huge bulking menace, with zero personality.

I like him (check my forum name) because he doesn't give a fuck about anything except killing things and reaching whatever goals he has (killing?). He's big, strong and makes things go boom. A kamehameha to the face doesn't phase and he makes Vegeta have panic attacks.

Panic attacks that make Piccolo carry him around by his hair and drop him. I know I couldn't have been the only one singing Piccolo-san Daisuki at that point...

That, and I guess I like his non-SSJ character design. He's a pretty boy. He's oppressed and pretty. And he looks so sad. That's all you need to get fangirls.

Me, I don't like the movies for Broli. I like them for Kuririn singing, rescuing his wife, and dressing up as Piccolo, Videl dressing up in a fluttery pink dress and getting the hell beaten out of her, #18 getting her money's worth, Future Trunks using Masenko, Trunks and Goten being Trunks and Goten...

People love power and lots of it. Be it power in business or in pure muscle power or even the kind of power to get people to do what you want. Broli is power to the Max and more. You don't even have to be a hardcore fan to be a Broli fan. When we first meet him he's a wuss and he needs to have a crown to control him because he is insane to the point of being a danger to himself and others. Then he all of a sudden loses said crown and gets the idea that Kakkarotto is his enemy. He keeps trying to kill Goku and then keeps on coming back. My little pet theory is that nobody wants to have this asshole's blood on their hands. Or perhaps, his is sort of a legendary kind of guy since he took so long to die in the series. In short he lives too long for his own good and cheats death which is another reason why fans love this musclebound freak.

Muchas gracias.
