For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
My stores volume six was edited but luckily I found an uncut version for a buck at the library once so I'm good ('course it was in the bigger format so my collection is all off set).
For future references I need to know if there are edits in volumes 3-5 and 7-11 and 13-14.

The "cat-VIZ" releases, save for Popo's lips, were uncut in the tiny SJ tankobons. At least,I always thought.

A while ago, I put every single known fact (at the time) about the English Viz manga, edits and all, into a thread on FUNimation's forums. I'm pretty sure it's all correct. A bunch of the edits were originally reported on these forums, so I recorded those, added ones that I had personally found, and compiled them into a list (naturally, I gave the Daizex forum members credit for the edits they found, which was a lot.JulieYBM wrote:For future references I need to know if there are edits in volumes 3-5 and 7-11 and 13-14.

I have Dragon Ball 1-16 all with the "Viz Cat/Bat/whatever" logo, and all of Bulma's nudity is left intact. Including the boob shot in Volume Nine at Baba's place. I did notice in volume two the "Lazer Blasters" line, but whatever.
My Z Tankobon is a mixed bag of viz Cat and Viz Media Logos. The only Edits I really find odd is when Guns are changed to "Lazer Pistols" in later volumes. Where they actually drew weird add-ons to the guns and added "Zap" sound effects. Why? What is the point. Videl getting her face smashed by a huge guy and blood all over the place, fine, but NO GUNS!
Also, I didn't even notice the Popo lip edit until someone mentioned it a long time ago, I guess I am blind.

While the list is great and informative, it's a tad bit inaccurate in some parts. I can't speak for all of them, but not all of the original Viz Graphic Novel run is 100% unedited. The edits you listed here for the third wave of Z Volume 2:MagicBox wrote:bkev wrote:The "cat-VIZ" releases, save for Popo's lips, were uncut in the tiny SJ tankobons. ...are all present in the very first printing of Dragon Ball Z Volume 2 from November of 2000, as well as the fact that Mr. Popo's lips are blacked out as well.Tankobon #18 / Dragon Ball Z - Volume 2
In chapter 12, Piccolo's threat to Gohan is changed from "I'll bash in your skull!" to "I'll slit your throat!".
In chapter 14, Gohan's genitals are painted away in the panel where he turns back from a Giant Ape.
The Saibaimen are renamed. "Saibaimen" is a play on words, and keeping the name untouched leaves the pun difficult to detect for English speakers, so Viz decided to try and translate it. Now, since "Cultivated Men" (Saibai = Cultivation) doesn't sound so catchy, they decided to use "Cultivars" instead.
Also, bear in mind that the Viz release for Z did NOT have a 13+ rating--let alone any rating whatsoever. That was something they did only for Volume 1-10 of DB, which I would assume means those are completley unedited. Z had no such warning.
Also, I don't know if this was changed in the original Graphic Novel print of Z Volume 1, but Piccolo's "Light of Death" goes all the way back to the original comic book-ish releases from the late 90s. I doubt they would have changed it to "Makankosappo" for the Graphic Novel release and then change it back to "Light of Death" in Volume 2, but since I don't own that volume, I can't say for sure. 2 is the only Volume of that run I own. I really wish I picked more volumes up back then, ESPECIALLY the Dragon Ball volumes, but these were REALLY expensive at the time of their release (15 bucks a pop was their original price, as opposed to the $8 price tag they carry now.) and I was only about 11 when they came out.

So, I'm going to order DBZ Volumes 18-26 for my birthday. Is there anything I'm missing in the "fourth wave" that I would have gotten in the "third wave". You make references to middle fingers and nudity being edited out, but it seems the middle fingers were edited already in the "third wave" and there's no nudity in the late-Cell and Boo Sagas that I can recall.

Are you talking about volume 9? If so, than Daizenshuu EX's Manga Reference Guide is missing some information.NeptuneKai wrote:I'm looking at my issue and I see tits n' all.SSj_Rambo wrote:That volume never had an uncut release.bkev wrote:Fine, remind me I unnecessarily capitalized... >_>

I hate to bring this back up but now I have Volumes 1, 2, 4-6, 9, 12-13, 15-16 now uncut and I was just wondering if there are any printings of volumes 3, 7-8, 10-11, and 14 I should avoid because of edits? I believe three and seven and eight are the only one's at risk but I figure it's best to be safe so I know which printings to be on the lookout for.
Thanks,
Jacob
