ALERT: Dragonball volumes 1-2 March 2008 printings are uncut

Post by JulieYBM » Sat Sep 06, 2008 7:34 pm

I was at my local B&N and I was running through volumes one and two and I noticed in volume one Bulma was not covered in bubbles and in volume two her middle finger was left in tact. If there are any other edits I can check for let me know as I bought them!

Isn't that the way they always were? I thought the bubble-covered Bulma and the middle-finger edit were only in the VIZBIG edition.

Nope. It was for...was it for all the Tankobon run after the graphic novel size, or the second/third run of the tankobons? I'm thinking the second or third run-through was censored.

Ah, OK. It's really hard to keep track of all the different releases of the English manga. It's good to know that the uncensored version can still be found in stores, though.

I'm confused now, actually. I was fairly certain that at least one run of the tankobon was censored. And I'm pretty sure all the releases have the Popo lips thing, don't they?

Correct, all waves of the manga had Mr. Popo's lips removed. If I'm not mistaken though, the Bulma bubbles scene and the middle finger scene were censored from the second printing of the manga onward. I'm not entirely sure, though.

Well, look at that. I just checked my store's tankobon copy, at it IS indeed unedited. Meaning, I'm totally switching my stupid edited releases for this.

Sweet.

If the logo on the spine looks like this, then it's unedited. I think that stays true up until volume 15 of DBZ.

Then it's all edited, no ifs-ands-or-buts about it.

Then the logo changes to the "Viz Media" thing that they still use today, which is slapped on all the edited manga volumes. Volume 15 is when they started censoring the material, with the removal of the middle fingers, swear words, and stuff like that. Later, all of Dragon Ball and volumes 1-15 of DBZ were reprinted and re-released with the current "Viz Media" logo, now with minor edits like nudity covering and stuff like that.

Actually, I used to have volume two with the "Viz-cat" on the spine and it was censored. One of the Rabbit henchmen had their lips altered. They also changed Oolong's dialogue when he's talking about Mai and Soba's guns to where they are now "laser blasters".

I phrased my post wrong. I should have said "if the logo looks like that, then it's from the original printing, where there were less edits than ever." I think Viz was always erasing "black people lips," but other than that I don't believe there were any edits to the art aside form that. Everything else was just dialogue edits. Can somebody back me up on that?

Are you sure it isn't Volume 18 or something? I have DBZ Volume 16 and 17 with the VizCat logo.

I know volume 15 was when they started censoring. Perhaps the VizCat logo went on longer than I thought, but volume 15 of the original printing is where the non-black-people-lip artwork edits start.

Actually, the only volumes of the tankoubon that have edited and unedited editions are:

-Dragonball vol. 1 (Fourth Printing) unedited
-Dragonball vol. 2 (Third Printing) unedited
-Dragonball vol. 3 (Second Printing) unedited

As far as I know all of the further volumes that have things that would generally fall into the "must edit" category are edited.

So... Wait... What?

Viz has got to be trying to confuse us on purpose at this point.

Yall are forgetting Volume 9's Bra!
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
