Dub Music: Are You A Fan?

I love it. And I really like the style Falconer used during the Buu saga, where he also remixed a few songs.
And not only that, but there was a wide variety of themes and a lot of specific ones, too. Hell, even the Destructo Disc had its own theme.

Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

I'm not as familiar with the Japanese music as I should be, but from what I've seen both are good. My qualms with the dub are in other areas, like the script.
The one thing that really bothers me is "Unmei no Hi" being replaced with the typical ANGRY music.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
The only song from the dub that I really like is the SSj3 Goku theme from DBZ movie 12 (it's also the Gogeta theme).
You can listen to the song here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Al3472CTOvo
I also really liked the English opening track to Sparking! (Budokai Tenchaichi), but I don't konw if that counts. I have the .mp3 of it if anyone wants it...
I also really like the dub of Makafushigi Abodencha.

I personally happen to be a big fan of Bruce Faulconer's work, especially the music in the Cell Saga. It was made so well to the point where if someone says Dragonball Z to me, I think of the music from the Dub first.
As for DB, I really didn't find anything special about it. I don't really recall any songs that stuck out to me.
As for GT, "Step Into The Grand Tour" wasn't so bad, though I would've preferred Faulconer. Besides that, I only like the music that plays when the episode title is shown.

Not a big fan of the FUNi dub music in general, though the score used in the Saban dub was halfway decent, mainly because it sounded orchestrated to an extent.
As Captain Awesome pointed out, it's very distracting watching a fight scene or even just characters talking and hearing synths wail and go "Whhheeeeehhhh" "Nnnnrrrrrrhhhhh" "Bluuuuuueeeehhhh" in the background.
Hell, that's one of the main reasons I even bought the Season Sets, so I could watch the dub with the original score. I can watch the show with my friends who like the dub, and I don't have to be assaulted with bad synth.
The American music used for the movies and TV specials were only good for one thing: They got me into some of the bands. I thimk Sum 41 has no place in DragonBall, but dammit, I got a hold of "Makes No Difference" as soon as I finished watching the Bardock special.
I think if FUNi went the route with DBZ that they did with their DragonBall re-dub, we would've all been better for it.
In my view, I think Faulconer is better suited to composing video game music. They use synths all the friggin' time.

Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.
So basically, to you guys, only orchestrated music counts as good music for DBZ?

Please tell me that was a joke intended to reference a Kevin Smith film, itself parodying New Jersey manners of talkings, and was mis-spelled in the process.jjgp1112 wrote:So basically, to use guys, only orchestrted music counts as good music for DBZ?
Furthermore, let's not turn this into another "I like this" and "I like that" argument thread. No real reason for it, and it doesn't seem to be what the original thread author intended. Keep it dub-only.

On the whole, I don't like the dub music, aside from a couple certain tracks that I like. The "SSj3 Powerup" theme works really well in a couple places it's used, and for some reason, I came to like the guitar-filled, overly-dramatic score for Fusion Reborn. Aside from that...

I like the dub music in the Legacy of Goku games...if that counts.
Mainly because repetitive synthesized music kind of belongs in a 16 bit game so it's definitely more at home there then it is in the anime in my opinion.
I don't think I'd mind the dub music as much if they ditched the pointless background noise tracks and added some silence only queuing music when necessary. It's definitely ear grating when two characters are just standing around talking and I have to hear this infernal repetitive "Stand-by for a fight" music. Really it isn't even music it's kind of like if I kept playing a few chords on my guitar over and over and over again.
Edit:(( Oh shit everyone brought up these points already, my bad))

Not at all. The earlier SNES & PS1 DBZ games had synthesized soundtracks, and sounded fantastic. Mainly becuase they actually had catchy melodies and actual rhythm.jjgp1112 wrote:So basically, to you guys, only orchestrated music counts as good music for DBZ?
And I'm not entirely bashing the dub music. Like I said before, the Saban stuff sounded very professional to me, and I enjoyed it overall. The FUNi/Faulconer music had a couple good cues to it, but overall it was incessant, rhythm-less droning. But the GBA games that used that soundtrack capitalized on those few good Faulconer cues and managed to turn it into a pretty good video game soundtrack.

Wow thx man, you honed in pretty specifically on my work!!! =DCasual Matt wrote:I really like the dub music used in the Artificial Human / Cell Arc and the Garlic Junior episodes. The rest of the Bruce Faulconer stuff was sorta "meh" to me.
Shuki Levi's music was okay, but a little forgettable. Still, it probably fit the original tone more than Faulconers.
Pretty much anything after that was crap. Menza's GT score and Johnson's music for the UUEs were just horrible.

Re: Dub Music: Are You A Fan?
I have to disagree, personally if it wasnt for "The History of Trunks" and Funimations use of Dream Theaters Scene from a Memory, I would have never gotten into Dream Theater. Aside from my personal experiences I thought the opening of "Home" was perfect for Goku's death scene.jda95 wrote:Personally..... yuk. Dragon Ball Z was not meant to be listened to with heavy synths and screaming guitars. Although I actually relatively enjoy the music, it just doesn't suit Dragon Ball. If I watch in English, I only do with original music.

25 seconds in is when the song starts.
As for the anime itself, some of Bruce's work was good some of it got annoying. I will forever hold a place in my heart for "Rock the Dragon" no matter how good the orginal openings were.
one mans opinion though

...Wait what are you doing? Are you still reading this? I finished what I had to say, why don't you move on to the next post?
