Dub Music: Are You A Fan?
Personally..... yuk. Dragon Ball Z was not meant to be listened to with heavy synths and screaming guitars. Although I actually relatively enjoy the music, it just doesn't suit Dragon Ball. If I watch in English, I only do with original music.

You know I always kind of tuned the dub music out back when I used to watch it on Toonami. The only piece I remember (because I thought it was interesting) was the Vegeta VS Android 20 music. Its really identifiable--sounds like creepy circus music. (Though if its good or not is debatable.)
The only dub music that really, REALLY got on my nerves was this ridiculous song that interrupted the middle of Movie 8's final battle. I remember not being able to even hear the VA's over the band, and that was obnoxious.
So for the most part, for me, dub music = mostly forgettable. Not necessarily good or bad, just "meh".

I like it. I mean they could've used less cheap instruments, but eh. Some music was good. Some was God awful. None fit the series if you're looking at the original Japanese version. But the dub was garnered around that atmosphere. I mean you can't blame a guy for liking it. That's how I watched the show first, that's how I saw it for years, and that's how I like it. The Japanese version overtakes it by a lot, but I always did say I look at it as two different versions telling the same story. Just because one is better than the other, doesn't mean you HAVE TO like one and HATE the other.

I like a lot of it in the Cell/Buu saga. But nothing else really. I still prefer the original Japanese music. It's just better and more befitting of the series. Especially those intros like Chala Head Chala or We Gotta Power.
In fact, I am always baffled why they couldn't just dub those intros like they did with the original DB. They are waaaay more professionally written and recorded than that crap Funi threw over the intro credits. Not to mention they just sound better.

Yeah, but they changed the crappy intro music more htan once. And after that time had passed. Soooo yeah, they could have changed it to the actual music IF they wanted to. Obviously not.TheGreatness25 wrote:They made DBZ long before they made DB. I mean really, back in the day, no Anime kept the original music really. Sailor Moon (I think, pretty sure), Street Fighter movie, all those shows made their own music.
It also baffles me they decided to go with the old music in DB's dub and then for GT they decided to make the most awful music in the world for it. That intro literally made the show WORSE.

They wanted all three shows to have their own spin I guess. For DBZ, they TRIED consistency. They tried to make a smooth transition from the old Saban dub to their newer one but... that plane crashed and burned, so they just stopped trying to imitate and took the reigns and made the show into their own image. Dragon Ball was a mystical pure story more than the "oh my God crazy action cartoon", so maybe that's why they decided to keep the original music. To retain that mystic feeling. GT was just.......................... Yeah the music was horrendous. Catchy ending theme, but other than that......................... Yeah the music was horrendous.

"Yo yo yo, it's the Grand Tour son, and we're kickin' it mad cool. And this Pilaf dude is totally a fool. We gots mad skill cuz now the Dragon Balls gots black stars. Those silly villains never seem to get very far. Cuz Goku yo, and his friends, they be up in their grills. And they gots the Nimbus so they like don't need wheels. Goku, Trunks, and Pan be flyin' into space. And makin' every villain into a big disgrace. Yo son, there's Vegeta, but he be lookin' mad fly and different. And Goku built his own place so yo son, he don't need to pay rent!"
I believe that was the original planned theme, but they decided to cancel it on the count of the no-name rapper overdosing because he would have to do this.

Sailor Moon attempted to stay similar to the original opening. Different tone and waaaay different lyrics, but *almost* identical.TheGreatness25 wrote:They made DBZ long before they made DB. Japanese Opening
Dub Opening
Same case happened with Speed Racer. Went for similar sounding opening, only with different lyrics.
Tenchi Muyo TV kept the same opening as the Japanese version, just had it translated. All of the background music stayed the same. Same goes for Neon Genesis Evangelion and other stuff that was on VHS at first in the US.
In fact, once Toonami started to pick up more anime, DBZ was the odd one out since it was the only one using its own dub music. Even Sailor Moon later on used the original BGM.

I think the dub music is horrible.
The majority of the dub score consists of nothing but extended synth notes that occasionally break into a character theme when something happens.
Seriously, I could pop in any dvd and find a scene where the "music" just wails incoherently in the background "Whhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrhhhhh" "Whiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnz" "Bvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvt"

I really like the dub music used in the Artificial Human / Cell Arc and the Garlic Junior episodes. The rest of the Bruce Faulconer stuff was sorta "meh" to me.
Shuki Levi's music was okay, but a little forgettable. Still, it probably fit the original tone more than Faulconers.
Pretty much anything after that was crap. Menza's GT score and Johnson's music for the UUEs were just horrible.

Liked some of Shuki's music, being a MMPR fan. But most Faulconer's is very forgettable and just doesn't fit my view of how DBZ should sound.
I do have a soft spot for the Cell arc music, especially because I love Legacy of Goku Two. Goku's SSJ3 transformation music was good too.
Other wise, Faulconer "Still sucks!" (EX reference there)

MMPR's music was actually written by Ron Wasserman. In the series credits, it credited an "Aaron Waters" but Mr. Wasserman was the guy singing all those songs.Forgotten Hero wrote:Liked some of Shuki's music, being a MMPR fan.
To bring it back to partway on topic, I always had a suspicion that Wasserman also composed this early DBZ music, yet it was credited to Levy, similar to the whole Faulconer thing.

The dub music I like, but it certainly makes the series seem more over-the-top serious. I also like the Japanese score it makes some of the more serious parts a little more mellow. I think the dub has a wider range though.
The Japanese score helps me connect the DBZ story to Dragon Ball story better.

I am Japanese and grew up with the original DBZ, but I like some pieces Bruce Faulconer composed. For example, in the episode 92 (77 in old dub), the scene Vegeta appears in Goku's mind is better when it's with the dub music. I dislike Mark Menza, though.
I also like musics used in the Ocean Group dub(Mega Man cartoon). Especially this one is impressive.

For your information, the Albanian dub has some dub musics as well.
