True, but a lot of major changes happened shortly after the timeskip.Duo wrote:Those happened after the five year divide. Not sure what you mean by "transition quality" here when you say none of the changes compare. The 23rd Budokai was pretty much a direct continuation of the Piccolo arc so I don't see how splitting it there would have possibly made more sense. Yeah, Goku suddenly got a lot taller, but that's hardly enough justification. When "Z" begins, we're immediately thrown into a completely new story with all these new revelations. The main character of Dragon Ball then proceeds to die like 5 episodes in. It was a major change.Duo wrote:Those happened after the five year divide. I don't disagree, but I prefer the divide between the other two arcs if a separation has to be made in the first place. There are a lot of visual and symbolic changes that take place leading into it, and I just like it better. Also, given that the american fanbase started with Z, I would have preferred if we could have gotten to know Goku and Piccolo as non-Aliens before battling the Saiyans. The Saiyan arc is so much more enriching if you know the character lore going into it more.

I don't think Z would have been a success if they started at the 23rd. That arc just plain doesn't work without watching the King Piccolo arcDuo wrote:I don't disagree, but I prefer the divide between the other two arcs if a separation has to be made in the first place. And I don't think the Saiyan arc works that well without the prior stories, but everybody already had to get past thatjcogginsa wrote: I don't think Z would have been a success if they started at the 23rd. That arc just plain doesn't work without watching the King Piccolo arc

Re: What phrases/opinions/things bring out your irate fanboy
I get irate at the injustice Broly constantly faces. Let's be honest, Broly is the strongest character in the franchise. If he appears in a new movie, Beerus will punch him, but he won't ****ing flinch like usual. He'll eat that rabbit before yelling "KAKAROOTTTT", going on a rampage, and spending 45 minutes kicking everyone's asses. But he'll lose after Goku plucks a piece of his eyebrow or destructo disks his balls off because it ain't never a fair fight against Broly...
jk. I don't really get mad. But it is funny cause he's depicted as invincible every single time before losing to bullshit.

"Dragon Ball once became a thing of the past to me, but after that, I got angry about the live action movie, re-wrote an entire movie script, and now I'm complaining about the quality of the new TV anime. It seems Dragon Ball has grown on me so much that I can't leave it alone." - Akira Toriyama on Dragon Ball Super

The "Z" dividing line is appropriate for a few reasons, but the main one is: the introduction of Gohan. He was basically Z's protagonist for 80% of the story. The other 20% being everything from Goku fighting Freeza to Cell absorbing No. 18. As well as the Buu arc's final battle.

Herms wrote:The fact that the ridiculous power inflation is presented so earnestly makes me just roll my eyes and snicker. Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

Hell, even more so when you consider that one of the anime staff's possible titles for Z was "Dragon Ball: Gohan’s Big Adventure".RandomGuy96 wrote:The "Z" dividing line is appropriate for a few reasons, but the main one is: the introduction of Gohan. I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

Dragonball Online, when it was a thing, had in it's history that the PTO attacked Earth for revenge on Freeza. But a twist, PTO believed that Hércule killed Freeza. Oh and the still living Z Fighters still gave a shit about anonymity for whatever reason and dressed up as Super Sentai/Power Rangers when they went to defend the Earth. I didn't know what ticked me off more, that the aliens were idiots, that Hércule got claim to another victory in what was the most crowning moment in the entire series, or that fearing the celebrity life somehow became a thing back in the Cell Saga, and wreaked havoc in life choices when defending the Earth. I went through the five stages of grief afterwards.

I kind of prefer DB over DBZ and Naruto over Shippuden, on that note: I still like DBZ and Shippuden, though, respectively.DBZAOTA482 wrote:DBZ to DB is like what Naruto Shippuden is to Naruto.

These people exist ?Theophrastus wrote:There are also people who hate the Funimation One Piece voices and insist that the 4Kids pirate rap is the best OP for the series and nothing else compares. "His name is Bills. Beerus is wrong."
That second one gets me. The first one is just strange. Because like, One Piece was like the DBZ dub and fans hated it and threw a fit. It's like, if it's DBZ, that's okay. But no other anime can be changed.

It's possible that they weren't actually serious (at least about the rap), but I have seen people express those views on another forum I visit, yes.
The main complaint about the Funimation cast being that it shares too many actors with the DBZ dub cast (Chris Sabat as Zoro, Sonny Strait as Usopp, Eric Vale as Sanji, Colleen Clinkenbeard as Luffy, Brina Palencia as Chopper...though Clinkenbeard and Palencia were cast in One Piece way before they became associated with DBZ via Kai).

''Goku was meant to be a scumbag, AT didnt want to portray Goku as a good guy''
''Vegeta doesnt get anything, Vegeta deserves better''
''AT sucks on character development, he destroyed Gohan's character''
Tho I gotta admit I like the eng dub better than JP dub.

100% agreement! There's a difference between poorly developing characters and forgetting about them/turning them into a power scale for the villains.SansrivaaL wrote: ''AT sucks on character development, he destroyed Gohan's character''

Things that irked me irrationally yesterday at the DBZ Red Carpet:
- People pronouncing Gine as "Jain."
- People who read the manga with "Jain" but have no clue who Jaco is.
- People who say "Akira pulled a George Lucas when he rewrote his old Bardock story."
- People who refer to Akira Toriyama as "Akira."
- People who won't stop yelling "Mardi Gras Freeza" in a crowded theater while a movie is playing and doesn't understand why everyone's paying attention to the movie instead of him.
I think that last one is just "rude people in a theater." The rest are stupid things that bother me more than they should.

Oh god, really?! Why on earth do people think it's acceptable to talk during a film let alone yell fucking jokes so everyone can hear. I'm mad just reading about it. During the premiere of a film, too. Goddamn.Kendamu wrote:People who won't stop yelling "Mardi Gras Freeza" in a crowded theater while a movie is playing and doesn't understand why everyone's paying attention to the movie instead of him.
