I think that they waited this long to get TO the Daizenshuu shows that they're doing this because enough people pestered them for so long for it. If they had released it much earlier it would have been more likely a "It has DBZs name on it lets sell it!" deal - which wouldn't necessarily bode well for further Daizenshuu.

Because the DBZ heyday in the states is dead (its off television, the manga is done, though being forever rereleased) that they released a random ass DBZ book would HAVE to be by popular demand. Otherwise there's no sense in it. The popular thing to do would be to release something for Naruto or Bleach instead.

Therefore, if this is being done for popular demand, the liklihood of a second Daizenshuu perfectly hinges on how well the Daizenshuu sells.

In short, Viz heard cries for the Daizenshii long enough, and consistant enough that they finally released one. Now we have to prove to them its worth doing more by paying for it.

Do they have that first Daizen in the bookstores like Borders? I go there a lot and haven't seen it.

Incidently, does anyone know when Glenat released the French editions of Daizenshuu 1 and 7, and where that was in releation to the manga and anime's release in France?

Is that why they waited 10 years after introducing the series before releasing a single daizenshuu?
They? Funimation did start operations until DBZ ended. Plus, Anime wasn't really around back then. Funimation bring over DBZ was really a pioneering factor to the anime phenomenon.

Cartoon Network pushing the show to number one status was more a factor, and also them pushing anime as top priority programming.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

Oh ok, I don't really know anything about Viz's history.

Yeah pushing it on to Toonami was a big factor, but I think basing your entire operations, at on point, on a single property is more important.

Yes. I picked it up yesterday, from Borders. It may be an early release though.

I'm in the generation of fans that started with Toonami, so I totally empathize with the feeling of having "missed the party", experiencing disappointment, and wanting to experience it myself. But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

Yeah, that was bad response to Raki there...

But you are right, DBZ did make Anime mainstream.

I think Sailor Moon and other anime helped to do it as well. DBZ didn't do it by itself.

No, I really think DBZ did it on its own. Sailor Moon, I think, made it acceptable for Girls to jump on the anime train. But a lot of girls already loved DBZ anyway.

But this only my opinion, so you are just as right or wrong as I am.

I always thought it was Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, and Pokemon together that launched the super-rise of 'anime being more widely known in the mainstream.' :?:

I'll be honest though, I had barely any clue what anime was when I first started watching them. I knew all three series were from Japan, but that didn't seem to factor into it.

Anyway, I bought my Daizenshuu earlier today and I LOVE IT! I want Viz to release all the other volumes now too.
On hiatus.

lol, this is the happiness I like to see. All because of Dragonball. :P

Anyways, I've been rereading my Daizenshuu like once a day.
I've also read that Shenlong Times, on Kanzentai, like a bunch of times.
Maybe they'll release all the Shenlong Times in one printing, I hope.

Got my book the other day, and I have to say, it's a lovely package. It's great to have all these high quality images and examine how Toriyama's style evolved over the decade. Good purchase indeed.
