Yeah, but didn't Buu reign destruction across the universe a long, long time ago in the story? You'd think the god would have heard of him...but even if he has, it doesn't matter if he's heard of Buu if he hasn't heard of Buu's defeat, and that event was pretty isolated. Good point.
Buu destroyed 100+ planets around 5 millions years ago. It's possible that Bils most likely never heard of him.

I highly doubt it. Gogeta is a Toei creation and I doubt AT would ever use him in anything.

Since we know the villains aren't named after alcohol now, would Whis and Bils still be an accurate approximation for their names?

Herms noted that in response to a comment in an update, actually.

Since we don't know what the name pun is, there's no "right" or "wrong" just yet. They're still valid romanizations/adaptations of the kana as-is.

Maybe have Whis ( who is impressed by everyone's reluctance to give up) tell Bils to spare them as he (Bils) prepares to deliver the final blow to Goku.. I know thats a bit cheesy but heres why I think it would be pretty cool if said events took place in the movie:

1. It rarely happens .. Sure Goku has lost fights in the past but most of which were by luck. Roshi beat him because his legs were longer, Ten beat him because Goku hit the ground first and Tambourine beat him because he was hungry? I believe (back when Goku being hungry affected his performance in battle). The only ones who beat Goku fare and square are King Piccolo, Tao PaiPai, and technically Vegeta but in the end Goku always came out on top. I think with everyone actually losing this battle it would potentially leave room for character growth.

2. In a sense Boo was the God Slayer, so whats another "God" showing up going to mean to the Z fighters by this point in the story when they had dealt with someone much more dangerous before? Bils winning the fight will actually make being a God in the DB universe mean something.
Soooo Bils actually does end up beating Goku!! So do I get points for calling it?! lol nah I'm joking but seriously I fucking called that shit... kinda 8)

I'm thinking that Goku will probably not be fighting at full power when he loses the first time.

Which would be super lame.

That's my biggest concern. That we'll just get a half-assed fight again.

Oooh, let me guess. Goku and the gang are out camping/carnival/shopping/circle-jerking when the new enemy appears and ruins their fun. Usagi Yojimbo beats the crap out of everyone, but at the last moment, Goku finds a hidden reserve of power within him, or combines his power with others', and defeats Buck O'Hare with one attack. Then a coda where everyone laughs at something or Vegeta and Piccolo end up standing (or sitting) around looking stoic, if a little beaten up. Or both.

Cue forgettable ending theme over clips of the movie.

He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

Yay

But I doubt the fight will be half assed. Goku is a smart man when it come to fighting, he knows when to hold back and when fighting is just down right pointless.

Maybe Gogeta will make a return and we'll actually get a decent fight between him and Bils.

I'm skeptical of the plot description. We've seen "Goku loses?!" before.

I don't care if the entire movie is a big gay orgy. It's DBZ Movie 14... with Toriyama involved. :o

Something tells me there will be someone new as far as the "good guys" go. By that I mean a new form of a character. A new fusion...? Something. Although for some reason I feel like it could be Vegetto SSJ3 (and, yet again some new way to split the Potara fusion will be found... again).

What I don't understand is why Freeza keeps coming up. There's always so much emphasis lately on the character's legacy. Chilled, Aba/Kado, and now for some reason he is the reason why Bils is interested in Goku. No, not because of an epic battle of galactic proportions that took place a few years previous, but because of... Freeza. :?

Well, it's used as a plot device multiple times in the Buu arc. I can't imagine Goku legitimately losing a fight and dying/being knocked unconscious. Not in a film with a finite space where the lead character needs to shine. Not at the beginning of the movie. I'm confident the description is purposefully misleading.

Has there been any word at all on the running time of the movie?

Would have to say, I'd be disappointed if it was just another 45 minute "movie" in all honesty.

Oh you know, against Piccolo Daimaō, Cell, Slug, Coola, Metal Coola, the Artifical Humans, Broli, Janenba, etc. It's a fairly standard plot point, and one that's sometimes hard to avoid -- Goku loses, must train more or get energy from somewhere else, and defeats stronger opponent. However, I have a feeling that this move is actually going to have some twists and turns to it, and not be so straight forward as previous movies. I could be wrong, but I'm hopeful.

Officially, no. But there has been much discussion throughout this thread of people comparing it to One Piece Film Z, which is set to be over 100 minutes (if I'm not mistaken).

This has come up before. It's a stand-alone movie whereas the previous films were screened as part of a double feature, so I doubt that it will be anything less than 80 minutes minimum.

Well, in most of those cases (Daimao, Cell, Coola clones, Androids, Janenba) he really did lose. I thought we were talking about being told he'd lose and instead he asspulls his way to victory instead.

It's a pretty foregone conclusion that Goku loses... up until he wins.

As Mike said, since we don't know, there's really no right or wrong. However, I've recently come around to the hypothesis that both names are based on different katakana spellings of the word "virus":
  • ビールス (bīrusu) --> ビルス ("Birus")
  • ウイルス (uirusu) --> ウイス ("Uis" / "Wis")
Both simply remove one character from the middle of the word to arrive at the name, so it seems pretty convincing to me. That said, it's still just a guess, with no official confirmation. Make of it what you will.

The 40-to-50-minute films were all back in the days of the Toei Cartoon Festival / Toei Anime Fair, when three or four works from different series were shown together. They couldn't have anything longer than that without testing the patience (and the bladders) of their audience.

The Toei Anime Fair was laid to rest after the dismal showing of Summer 2002, and standalone One Piece films released since then (with the exception of the 3-D film) have been at least 90 minutes long. (To contrast, the first three films, released for the Spring 2000, 2001, and 2002 Toei Anime Fairs, each clocked in at an hour or less.) There's no reason to expect that the new Dragon Ball film won't be longer, even though we can't say for sure just how long it will be.
