That doesn't change the fact that the Manga is the source material (if you want to go even more specifically, the Japanese manga, and even more so we can go to the chapters released in Weekly Shonen Jump during the original run, but that's extremely nitpicky). The anime is derived from the manga, which is the source material. The anime will never be the source material by merit of it coming from a source.TheMightyOzaru wrote:It's true, since the material in the original Funimation dub doesn't match the original Japanese anime, it doesn't match the source material since the Japanese anime is the source.
For instance, I don't care how much you like the original TMNT cartoon that started back in 1987, the Mirage Comic series started by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird back in 1984 is the source material (it's also by far the best material in TMNT, and probably not too appropriate for kids, but that's besides the point).
It's called the source material because it all started from some point. For Dragon Ball, it was the manga; for TMNT, it was the Comics; for Mobile Suit Gundam, it was the 1979 Anime (though one could argue the novelization by the series creator and the manga (MGS: The Origin) by the character designer are both superior works, as they were allowed to be done by one creator, rather than having to try to ram ideas through a company's vision and fighting early cancellation).
I'm not sure if it is, but even in Japan, you quite often get men with deep voices back during Dragon Ball's run. Anything Akira Kamiya voiced for instance (Kenshiro had an amazing voice). Tohru Furuya didn't have the deepest voice, yet when he voiced young teens, they still sounded more masculine than Goku most of the time. Luckily for Furuya, he seems immortal with eternal youth granted to his voice, so I won't complain there.Tyro wrote:I've never been outside the US so I don't know what may or may not be true for another country, but I would agree that men are "supposed" to have deeper voices than women. But while Goku may sound womanly to some, maybe he sounds natural to children in Japan? Maybe being more high pitched is reflective of his innocent nature? If JPN Goku sounds like a woman to people around the world then I humbly retract my statement.
You say "in real life" but I think it's important to frame this as an anime thing. We've all heard tons of voices, from the highest pitched to the deepest, like FUNi Piccolo, that I think wouldn't sound natural to some degree, but they definitely sound badass on screen.
As for Funi Piccolo, yeah that was unnatural...then again, he was a green alien who formerly called himself a Demon, and was voiced in a way that made him sound Demonic in the Ocean Dub. For his Kai voice, he's actually kept it mostly close to his natural speaking voice (kinda in his Zoro level). Though, screams and such do go back down a bit.
And GM, don't you mean the King of Pop? People made fun of Michael Jackson's voice on occasion (though when it came to music, he was purely amazing).

If you're talking about the story or franchise in general, then, yes, I would agree with you. The original manga is the source, and the animated version is an adaptation. However, we're talking about dubbing. And in terms of dubbing something into another language, the source material is whatever is being dubbed. So, yes, the anime IS the source material in the context of this conversation.Mewzard wrote:That doesn't change the fact that the Manga is the source material (if you want to go even more specifically, the Japanese manga, and even more so we can go to the chapters released in Weekly Shonen Jump during the original run, but that's extremely nitpicky). etc...
To use your own example, while TMNT's original source material is the comics, there was another comic series that was spun off from the television series. It had nothing to do with the original comics. So while the original comics are the progenitor of all future TMNT products, in this case, this particular comic did not use "the source" as its source material. The TV show was its source material. To continue even further, there was a wide range of action figures in the '80s and '90s of TMNT. Most of them were largely based on the comics. However, there was a specific line of Toon Turtles that sourced the cartoon. There was a Movie Star line that imitated the look of the feature films. In those latter two cases, they certainly weren't using the original comics as their source material.

It's high but the voice works for that age and build. People's voices change, well into adulthood.matt0044 wrote:And a boy tends to hit puberty around 13. Your point?ABED wrote:Does Nozawa make Goku sound young for his age? He's 23 at the beginning of DBZ.

So I'm not understanding - I'm ignorant because I don't like the female voice actor of Goku? I think DBZ is one of the best dubbed animes, most of them are terrible and I prefer the Japanese voices, DBZ is perfect.
Re: The general American fanbase really annoys me.
DBZ is not even close to one of the best dubbed animes. I love the English voices. But the first dub and remastered dub are bad. DBZ is not even close to a perfect dub. If it were then they wouldn't have created so many problems. I ain't much of an anime fan, but i'm pretty sure anyone on here who is an anime fan can list 20 dubs with better acting and accuracy then the dbz dub. The Kai dub is miles beyond the Z dub in acting and accuracy and even then it's not perfect or have spectacular acting.Axiom wrote:So I'm not understanding - I'm ignorant because I don't like the female voice actor of Goku? While music & voices are opinion based, and I won't argue with you on that, the FUNi dub of DBZ has a terribly inaccurate script (plot holes, out-of-character moments, completely different back-stories, completely made up facts), and the voice acting is also terrible at times. These two are facts.Axiom wrote:So I'm not understanding - I'm ignorant because I don't like the female voice actor of Goku? James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

One of the best dubbed anime? Not to disrespect your opinion but as an anime geek, I have to tell you DBZ english dub isn't even in the top 100. That's barely a hyperbole so that's saying a lot. A good dub is good voice acting and some-what accurate script. Only example of this for the franchise is Dragonball english dub as DBGt voice acting was hit and miss at times and DBz kai was a good translation. To be one of the best dubs you have to have these:
Accurate script.
Good - outstanding voice acting
Original Music
Accurate Voice acting(Imitating the original audio. Rather than being a good voice)
Less than 4 bad voices
Funimation Dbz failed at all of these. Not even close to perfect.

Re: The general American fanbase really annoys me.
Dragon Ball Z's dub is good if you're watching it the same way you'd watch Voltron or Samurai Pizza Cats and only one of those is intentionally bad. From a serious viewpoint, though, DBZ has a horribly inaccurate dub with green voice actors and replacement music that doesn't even fall into the same universe in terms of themes and tones. Whether you or I like that dub or not is irrelevant. It is definitely not one of the best. It almost completely fails in the sense that it did not take a foreign show and present it to an American audience. Instead it took that show, changed up a bunch of things (including characterization, backstory, and motivations), and gave us a new product that keeps the same basic storyline as the original foreign show. That does not fall into the "best" or "perfect" categories outside of ironic enjoyment of nostalgic television.Axiom wrote:So I'm not understanding - I'm ignorant because I don't like the female voice actor of Goku? The thing is, there's nothing wrong with liking something like the Dragon Ball Z dub. I enjoy the everloving crap Samurai Pizza Cats with no shame attached. I'm just not about to say that it's a good dub of Kyatto Ninden Teyandee because, based on the original characterizations, motivations, backstories, music, and voices, Samurai Pizza Cats doesn't even try to be close to its source show. They're completely different products that just happen to use the same moving pictures. So, let's not pretend for a single moment that Dragon Ball Z's dub (outside of a few movies) remotely resembles a "good dub" of the original Dragon Ball Z.
