Exactly. Most of the character names and some of the in-universe objects were changed to their dub version:

Dragon Balls = Bolas de Cristal
Kame Sen'nin = Tartaruga Genial
Chichi = Kika
Tsuru Sen'nin = Corvo Genial
Piccolo = Coraçãozinho de Satã
Freeza = Freezer
#16, #17, #18, #19 and #20 = C-16, C-17, C-18, C-19 and C-20

Freeza to Freezer *was* in the Spanish translation, and I believe the androids were referred to as A-[number]. The rest was just the Portuguese translators trying to match the dub.

Kinto'un = Kinton (not Nuvem Mágica)

This is in the spanish translation.

Saiyajin = Saiyanjin (not Guerreiro do Espaço)
Super Saiyajin = Super Saiyanjin, (not Super Guerreiro)

Spanish translation uses 'Saiyanos' and 'Supersaiyanos'.

Mr. Satan = Mr. Satã (not Hércules)
Majin Buu = Monstro Bu (not Bubu).

Spanish translation uses Mr. Satán and Monstruo Bu.

We've also got cases of "perdoa!" instead of "desculpa!", excessive cursing (the Spanish curse a lot more than the Portuguese) and overuse of the future tense, which is rarely used in Portuguese, among just general awkwardness. Overall, it's readable, it was through it that I read Dragon Ball in its entirety for the first time, but yeah, it is pretty awkward. It's one of the reasons I'm looking forward to the continuation of Viz's Full Color Comics: so I can add them to Asa's 18 volumes and have a complete collection again.

Yeah. The problem isn't that it was translated from Spanish, because the Spanish translation is actually extremely accurate; the problem is that the Portuguese translator was completely incompetent.

Yeah, I don't know about that. All I can tell you is that I own 5 kanzemban volumes of the Spanish release (which as far as I know did not get an updated translation, in case you're wondering), and the translation is extremely solid.

The translation isn't updated from the Spanish tankobon. In fact, it's got a few typos the tankobon didn't have. The only change I remember is that the Kanzenban uses the Spanish term "Bolas de Dragón" while the Tankobon called them Dragon Balls, leaving the English term.

I'm not doubting the accuracy of the Spanish translation, most people I know have Spanish manga translations in very high regard, it was just pure laziness on the part of the Portuguese branch of Planeta DeAgostini. Their thought process is clear as day: "Well, let's put these out. We're obviously not going to translate from Japanese, who the hell can understand that crap? We'll just grab the Spanish version, it's "the same thing". Let's just ask Olga [that's her actual name] to convert the words into Portuguese, no need to hire an actual translator, and we're good to go."

It was cancelled. A shame, since it was a pretty good edition. We were actually lucky we even got volumes 17 and 18 at all.

I would not recommend it. If you can only read in English and Portuguese, this edition is by far the best. The translation is better than Viz's (even though it's based upon it), the paper quality is comparable to that of the VizBigs, the quality of the printing is top notch, and it's 100% uncensored. It's not perfect, but it only has minor annoyances, so, in my opinion, you'd be losing a lot more than symmetrical precision by passing these up.

Sometimes stuff like this really bothers me so much that I can't have it on the shelf because it looks unsatisfying to me, hell, it wasn't until 2014 that I finally owned a copy of Dragon Ball Z: Tenkaichi Tag Team because it took me a while due to wanting it with the original and not the "Essentials" (sellers on Amazon that are selling under the original cover are shipping Essentials' copies because I asked a couple of them around that time).

I might go with the Spanish Dragon Ball release (if the spines aren't messy) because I can read whether it's English, Spanish or Portuguese so it doesn't matter as any of the three fit for it.

Too bad female Saiyans aren't really brought up very much except for Son's mother and such.

More or less. They look good when aligned, but they have one problem: the paper is a bit thinner than in the Japanese edition, so the image formed with the spines isn't finished. To compensate for this, Piccolo Daimao and Vegeta appear in the back cover of volume 34.
