Future Trunks is pretty much a bad fanfiction-esque character to me.
Some random kid, with a
sword, who came from the
future, comes and one-shots the previous major villain, only to reveal that there will be much more powerful villains.
On top of this, he's the son of two characters who you'd never expect to be together, he's completely unique for his race, and he's a Super Saiyan (which was impressive since only Goku was at the time).

Yeah, I have to admit I don't like this either: I feel Chi Chi and Roshi have been flanderized nowadays. I remember when Chi Chi was infatuated with Goku and wanted to do anything to please her fiance, and now...it's just money, school books, etc.
Roshi has been hit the hardest: he was always perverted, yes, but he also had a very wise and kind side to him. Now it's just boobs this and puffu puffu that all the time.
It's like TOEI is trying to destroy what credibility they have left. It's like watching rape to me (no offense).

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

I'm just about done with the concept of reboots and making shows that were products of their time and impactful "new and sexy" and in line with modern tastes and sensibilities. Let stuff stay in their era and give today's kids their own shit to watch.
I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about

The question is: was the idea fanfiction-eque before or after DBZ introduced it? I'm sure it's not the first time that someone from the future warned a past hero about impending doom. However, I feel that DBZ using the trope -- and the series being as popular as it is -- made it so much more prevalent in other media that no one can use it and have it taken seriously anymore.

Don't forget his beautiful hair and eyes. That said, as mentioned above, I wonder if all of this was "fanfiction-esque" before or after Future Trunks was even a thing. We say that now cause it's been overdone (e.g. Xicor). But it's very possible that all of those fan creations are directly inspired by Future Trunks in the first place.
Also, Future Trunks had so many great moments, it's hard not to like him, even if he didn't really contribute to anything grand in the saga itself besides warning them.

I do like him. He's one of the very few characters that never got on my nerves. But he just appears literally out of nowhere, barely talks about anything outside the plot, barely does anything useful after his introduction, spends an entire year with Vegeta yet their father-son relationship is more or less the same (mostly due to Vegeta's massive jerkassery at the time though) and then returns to his future, never to be seen again.
He never develops, and it's kinda understandable considering that he appears for one arc only, and that the only characters who talked to him on a personal level are Bulma and Kuririn IIRC.

You need to develop your sense of humor because you are taking it too seriously. And yes, humor is pretty much always making fun of something, which is why it only works when people aren't taking stuff too seriously. Really, which comedian would be funny if we took every joke he makes completely seriously? That comedian telling a joke how his wife is a pain? How dares he to speak ill of his wife! That comedian saying some stereotypical thing? How dares him to be stereotypical! Some comedy showing some guys falling over? How dare they make fun of a potentially serious injury! Roshi liking women too much and being way too interested in young women? How dares he to be a perv and not respect women!
Nothing remotely comedic survives with that outlook... It only survives if people don't take it seriously.

That's not the problem (if you knew me you wouldn't be saying this). I'm fine with making jokes at the character's expense I just don't want them to be defined by these jokes. It's one-dimensional and lame, especially when they used to be incredible in the original (or coulda been in Chi-Chi's case, at least).
Then again I might too hasty judging only by the first episodes though. Maybe future episodes would at least get their more appreciative qualities across so we don't have to deal with more insolence from the casuals... but knowing TOEI's history with them... it's doubtful.

I said what I said because you linked it to rape and because it's not even anything different from anything we've seen in Dragon Ball regarding the characters, but you know best.

Roshi groping girls is really tired and old by this point.
Especially when they were tone-deaf enough to jam it in like "the shockwave from Vegeta's suicide makes Roshi grab 18's tits!! LOOOOOOOOOOOL"

Yeah, I hate that by the end of Z, that's what he was basically only around for anymore. It's even worse in Super when he makes a random appearance at the end of the first episode, just to ask Goku for money, that he shouldn't even know he has, so he can buy porn DVDs.

Remember when Roshi used the prize money from the 21st Budokai to treat Goku and others to a buffet? Nah, me neither.

Funamentally, but have you ever saw Roshi randomly appear to spend someone else's money on Porn DVD or Chi-Chi ever expressing desire to send Goten "to the best school with the best teachers" despite never showing any prior signs to caring g hat much for his education?

To be fair, they at least threw Roshi a bone in RF. You can say that's the only character they treated right in that entire film.

What are you talking about? Roshi rarely wastes an opportunity to be a perv, whether it's just watching women on the TV, asking them naughty stuff just after he says hello, trying to grope them, etc. What makes you think that that's not consistent with him thinking of buying dirty DVDs thanks to the fortune of one of his friends?
And Chichi has always wanted to give a good education to Gohan. Why wouldn't she want the same for Goten? With that much money, she can even give him the best education, which obviously she would want.

Same thing with Chi-Chi. It'd be fine if she wanted Goten to have a decent education so he doesn't turn a fool but really... the best schools with the best teachers... did she even want that with Gohan (all we know is she put heavy priority in his education)? It just does not need to happen (especially with how she was like to Goten in the Boo Saga). Also what about the mortgage on the house, the groceries, the whatever bills, etc. ?
With Gohan, this relatively cuddled life made him] standout from the cast of fighters where most of them live to fight along with making him relatable to the audience especially ones around his age and it was understandable from a financial standpoint. Goku doesn't do shit around the house, they have to rely on her father's inheritance (which certainly wasn't gonna lost), and they don't seem to have much.

Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan is a dumb name for an alright looking transformation.
I like Super Saiyan 4, might even go as far as to call it my favorite form. It just looks so original and contrasting from the others.
Dragon Ball Super shouldn't be retelling the movies since they aren't old and people can just buy the DVDs, not to mention that I can't help but feel they were shoehorned in there.

Roshi never expected that the dinner would cost him all of the prize money, and Roshi offered to buy them dinner because he was the one who secretly defeated them and stopped them from becoming champions, so he wanted to do something nice for them. Just because Roshi rarely misses a chance to be a pervert, doesn't mean that he is a jerk that won't offer dinner to his friends/disciples in those circumstances, especially if he doesn't expect to spend all his money in the dinner. Obviously, Roshi's moment in Super was for the humor angle and it was perfectly in line with his humorous moments in the previous series.

They just got a incredible amount of money. According to Jaco, 1 Zeni is about 1.5 Yen, so 100.000.000 Zeni would be 150.000.000 Yen, which is about 1.210.000 american dollars. They are basically millionaires now, they could have all that and more, so why wouldn't she want the best for Goten and why do you assume she wouldn't want the best for Gohan if she could afford it with no problems?

Vegeta is a lame one-note character that is no where near the status of a "badass".
