There are some excellent choices on there, but most of them are in the wrong spots. Goku's a great character, but adult Goku in Z is not as good as his younger self in the previous series. Also putting Naruto, Ichigo, and Kenshin so high up, Luffy and Lupin so far back, and even including Shinji are some bad choices.

Not popular... IN AMERICA!
Bah! Kenshiro should be on the list. He is after all the quintessential martial arts manga character and came way before the likes of Dragon Ball.
Glad to see Kenshin and Spike Spiegel so high up.

IGNorant without IGN! Man, I don't get to use that line enough.
Oh wow, people still say that?
I thought people stopped being that lame a long time ago.

Perhaps so... My point has been debunked it seems.

However, I still don't see how you could consider Pikachu one of the best anime characters of all time... He's more of an extension to Ash than his own full-fledged character.

Pikachu exsists in all forms of the Pokemon franchise, even the parents know Pikachu. Be it the games, the manga, or the anime, Pikachu is the mascott for the Pokemon franchise. I really think Pokemon would be nothing like the money monster it is today if it wern't for it's cute, yellow mascott.
Besides, Ash is a cunt.

Of course, by my count only 6 of the characters on the list actually originated in anime (Shinji, Totoro, Lelouch, Jubei, Rei, and Spike). The rest appeared first in manga, books, or video games. So maybe I’m being too much of a stickler.

Considering it's IGN, it's lucky that the list is even this good.

(I don't see the problem with adding Shinji Ikari, unless you're one of those folks who likes to be an internet tough guy and rip into the kid. If he was some loudmouthed badass, it would entirely miss the point of the show. I think he's an interesting character.)

I prefer Satoshi/Ash. Everything comes too easily to Red. Ash is that dopey special needs kid you want to root for. I feel like Red doesn't need my support.

Ain't they the same person pretty much? Or do folks look at game characters different than their anime selves with different default names?

They're different characters, as are all the manga character based off the game protagonists.

Then again, given that the game character doesn't really have a personality in the first place, I assume it's one of the other characters named "Red" they're talking about... and since they're writing in English, and the English Internet Pokemon community has, for some reason or other, decided that the only Pokemon manga that exists is Pocket Monsters Special, I would guess they mean the "Red" from that series.

Red is also the official name given to the player character from Red Blue and Green, and the male protagonist from the Fire Red and Leaf Green remakes.

Yes, he's recognizable, popular and memorable, but he isn't really a "character" so much as he is a mascot. The only time he ever showed any personality is in the first episode.

That would be like me saying that Toucan Sam or Tony the Tiger are some of the best animated characters of all time, when they are simply there to sell a product.

I like Haruhi quite a bit, but you have to have a tolerance for her type of character.

Actually, though, Haruhi is more of a parody of that "type".

Well, only three other Pokemon manga besides Special got to the U.S., none of which star any other "Red." There's hardly any solid information on all the other Pokemon manga. I'm sure finding scanlations of them would be a bitch.

21. Vegeta
First Appearance: Dragon Ball Z Episode 11, "Trouble on Arlia," 1989
Well, technically it's episode 2. Unless you go by when his first speaking role is, then it's episode 5.

Yes, I mentioned that. One letter before the stuff you quoted. I just assumed they meant the Special guy, since the game guy doesn't really have a personality.

That would make slightly more sense if not for the fact that the game character is also named Red, as mentioned.

Scanslations probably don't exist for most of the other series, but a whole ton of them has been translated into English in Singapore, and can be found on Ebay with extremely little effort.

Have to say I never really liked the whole naming characters after the color of the game thing. Especially when you get to generation 3 and 4 as you could only name the girls that seriously.
