(Hence, IIRC, "Nimbus", "Tri-Beam" etc. stay as-is since they appear in Dragon Ball, but "Special Beam Cannon" and "Destructo Disc" revert to their original names of "Makankosappo" and "Kienzan", since they're only introduced post-Dragon-Ball).

If so, it'll probably be "Android", since that's set up in Dragon Ball with "Android #8". If they're trying to keep consistency with their dub of GT too (anyone who's seen it, did "Spirit Bomb" become "Genki Dama" or stay as-is? That'll probably be the first clear indication of whether they're doing this), then it definitely will be "Android" since Android #17 and #18 both appear in that.
Yeah, they used "Spirit Bomb" like in GT. Which I don't really mind since that one was actually a half-decent translation.

If they're retitling things based on how cool they sound, IMO Spirit Bomb sounds cooler. Genki Dama sounds like something you'd find on the bottom of your shoe. Likewise, Makankosappo sounds cooler than "DERRR SPECIAL BEAM CANNON."

Kianzen and Distructo Disc both sound cool to me. :?

It's Kienzan by the way. And I think they're only changing the attack names if the pre-established dub names aren't related to the Japanese name at all. Or if they used a different name in Dragon Ball.

While it's true Artificial Human would be more accurate overall, odds are they're going to use Android. If anything because the Japanese use that as their translation most of the time anyhow.

I personally don't like artificial human at all. While jinzoningen might work in Japanese, a literal translation of "artificial human" is needlessly verbose in English. People just don't talk that way. It sounds way too much like an awkward Babelfish translation.

Not completely. Mahoromatic used the term in its english version and it flowed well with the script all things considered. It's not that it wouldn't "work" in Kai if they were to use it for the dub, they just probably won't.

Agreed. I've never once heard someone use the term "Artifical Human" as a way of referring to an Android or Cyborg.

In Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, I believe Ed or Al referred to Homunculi (people made through alchemy) as "artificial humans" when they were talking about them as kids.

Saying something is an artificial human as a descriptive works fine. "What's a cyborg?" "Oh, it's an artificial human." What I find awkward is using it as somebody's name. Artificial Human 18 sounds like somebody ran Jinzoningen 18 through Babelfish and called it a day.

Just gonna throw this out there: even though science fiction stories try to differentiate between robots, androids, bioroids, cyborgs and what have you, in real life the terms aren't as strictly defined as people think. Very basically, an android is a humanoid robot. But what's a robot? The first time the term "robot" was ever used was in a play, where the robots were organic, artificially constructed servants. Technically speaking, one could argue that anything that is artificially made, can interact with its environment and can be programmed to complete specific tasks could be considered a robot.

If you think about it, 17 and 18 probably fit that description from Gero's point of view. Even though he made them from normal humans, he certainly doesn't think of them as those humans. They're his creations, #17 and #18--the two human teens were just parts. He built them for a specific task and assumed he'd be able to control them. It makes sense to me that he'd consider them just another two of his Artificial Humans/Androids.

His Daizenshuu entry says that he was made from a human base.

I think both androids and cyborgs can be called robots, but android and cyborg is not interchangeable.

In fact, the kanji for Homunculus used in the manga is jinzo-ningen (with homunkurusu written next to it in katakana). :D

Speaking of that manga, I need to read the two latest chapters!
