Kinda curious where the... well, I guess "curiosity" behind Toriyama and other dubs comes from. As others have pointed out, it's always been somewhat obvious to me that he was so incredibly hands-off, that he likely never had much of an opinion of much. And by "much", I mean "anything at all ever".

Part of me sees it as hardcore dub fans wanting justification for liking what they like ("If the author was OK with it, that's good enough for me!"). I can speak from personal experience that after digging further into questions I've received from English dub fans, that's what's boiling down underneath in many cases. I would never paint that globally across all dub fans, though (English or otherwise), but it's definitely floating around in the back of my head when I read things like that.

I'm sure a lot of it is just general curiosity, which I totally get and respect.

And I'm totally on-board with breaking out "recluse" from "dedicated worker". The two may (and likely do) cross, but they're not inherently one-in-the-same.

... The fact that the last part of your question is in quotes makes me afraid that somewhere, some internet whackjob claimed he did in fact say this. Probably in those words.

Addressing your first point, I don't see why dub fans have the need to justify to others why they like the dub. Honestly, they're fans so who cares? "Oh, they haven't seen it all in Japanese, they must not be as hardcore as me!" Psh, big deal. Fandom is different for everyone, some people prefer to hear it in their native language...don't chastise them for it. And I know people are gonna argue "It was meant to be in Japanese!" Well, yeah, that's the audience he went for, Japan. But he sold rights to get it translated and out to fans around the world.

Your second point I totally agree with too. Yeah, they may not get out at lot if at all some weeks working on the serialization, however they don't go into the business because they don't like getting out of the house and interacting with people.

That's exactly the issue, though. At certain points when I am personally asked certain questions about the English dub, when I actually question back further to see what they're really getting it, it all comes back around to looking for approval. Whether it's a voice, a script, a music change -- whatever it is -- it's ultimately someone looking to get a "Yes, it was good, and you're cool for liking it!"

Rarely am I asked by super hardcore English dub fans whether I like something just out of their sheer curiosity -- if they are that hardcore about it to ask such a hardcore question and know how hardcore I am and what exactly I do and don't like... well, what exactly are they hoping to get out of it? I could (but won't ^_~) share some of the e-mails we receive to the site address and podcast addressed to me specifically that go on and on and on and on about how much they love some certain little thing about FUNimation's production, and then ask for me to basically turn around and give my seal of approval.

You don't need it.

And what I was getting at was that I see a lot of that with folks asking if Akira Toriyama ever gave his blessing about something with the English dub. It would be the ultimate sign of approval. It's no different than someone asking if Toriyama ever specifically chose a voice actor for a character, or specified which form of Buu was the strongest. Did Toriyama say it? Was I just justified in my line of thought? GOLDEN.

I will of course say yet again that I'm not here to paint a broad stroke across all of fandom and anyone who's ever been interested in what Toriyama has to say about some little (or major) thing. Sometimes we're just curious. I sure am. That's cool. I give my approval. Toriyama probably does, too.

It's the great ideas and discussion like this that's brought me to this site over the years. I couldn't have said it better myself.
On that note, I grew up watching both the Japanese and English dub...can I get a stamp of approval? Hahaha
