...although you seem to be referring to Geneon USA and Geneon Japan here, which are indeed separate companies (well... were separate companies.) Geneon's USA branch was a subsidiary owned by the Japanese company, not just an American office of the Japanese companies.
There is no company named Geneon Universal Entertainment anymore.
No, my point is a bit of the opposite in fact. Since the US branch never did ANY DBZ work under the Geneon name, calling them by it (while still also referring to Pioneer) adds confusion into the mix, especially for members who don't keep up on this stuff.
I was going with the thought that it was common knowledge by now that Pioneer became Geneon.
And Geneon Universal Entertainment still exists... But damn it, the name changed AGAIN. Just last month! Now they're "NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan". But they're still alive.
I can understand your point that it's confusing for people not in the know, though. But it's going to be confusing no matter what, and I don't want people to think Pioneer and Geneon are two different companies. I feel like it would be annoying to people and redundant for me to have to copy and paste some long explanation how Pioneer became Geneon became Geneon Universal became NBCUniveral...

Generically, sure. But being that they never were involved with DBZ in the Geneon era, referring to Geneon at all seems a b it weird.

Still alive, sure, but not Geneon anymore.

Then just don't mention Geneon. Minus a footnote that years after their their involvement with DBZ ended they changed their name from Pioneer to Geneon, the name Geneon doesn't need to be involved in a DBZ/Funimation discussion at all.

I guess it's kind of important to note that none of the non-Ocean dubbed films saw a Canadian TV broadcast. Funimation's releases were carried by retailers up here though.

I never once picked up a fansub in the era of VHS fansubs. I'm pretty sure my first ever viewed subs was from my first ever DVD purchase for DBZ (third to last Buu Saga release, my first DBZ DVD and uncut release) back in...was it 2003? Somewhere around then. I know I didn't see any fansubs until after I started reading the US Shonen Jump at its start, and it was during the era of internet subs...probably started with the advent of Youtube. So yeah, I saw the movies as Funi released them.
Frankly, I'm still hoping they'll find the excuse for a redub of the original some years down the line, when they think they might be able to justify it to a younger audience.
As for why Ocean didn't do it, I agree with it being cheaper as the reason. Those would be additional rights, and perhaps they weren't sure if the movies would make up for the cost of it.
