Is there a reason why the Ocean Dub didn't dub all 13 films?

Post by dbboxkaifan » Fri Jan 10, 2014 9:07 am

I've been watching my DBZ Rock the Dragon Edition and I can say I enjoyed the Ocean Dub as much as the original Japanese version but sadly they only dubbed the first three films why is that? :(

I tried FUNimation's old dub and Kai dub but I just can't get used to those voices no matter what, so it's either Japanese audio or Ocean Dub (1-53 eps / 1-3 films).

Again, the "Ocean Dub" was always FUNimation from 1996-1998 (up until the alternate TV dub was created/started-up years later in... what, 2000? 2001?).

So everyone DID get an exact continuation of where FUNimation left off... because they started back up with DBZ Movie 4 once they actually licensed more material. Sure, it wasn't really "uncut" even in the English dub's uncut track and the music was all replaced for a while, but it was the same company picking up with the same movies right where they left off, and you still got the Japanese version on there.

If you're asking why AB Groupe / whomever it was fully in charge of the alternate English dub... well, they just didn't license them. Who knows why? It was clearly a cheap production to rush out the door as quickly as possible, and the movies are likely more expensive to license, so it all adds up pretty quickly.

Aw that's a shame but it's better having 1-53 eps / 1-3 films than nothing at all.

Thanks, VegettoEX.

Wasn't AB Groupe responsible for the Big Green movie dubs?

As far as I can tell / am aware, AB Groupe is kinda the overall big-time rights holder for most of Europe, and then they dish out certain productions to other folks. I've been led to believe that they had SOME control/say in getting said alternate English DBZ dub created, even if it was completely hands-off and vaguely-supervisory.

One thing that really bothered me about movie 4's dub and everything afterward was that I expected the movies to be dubbed with the same amount of care that the first three were -- the original BGM, accurate scripts, etc and I remember being really, really disappointed with movie 4's DVD finally came out. I can only assume that having better scripts and the original music was something Pioneer had done rather than FUNimation but I've always wondered who made the final decisions on that matter.

The Funimation dub of movie 8 was pretty accurate.

Didn't many fans see the movies after 3 way before Funimation got them? I mean, the fansub tapes were circulating for years because Funimation dragged their feet with the movies.

There are a whole bunch of movies I haven't even heard dubbed, because why bother? I saw them a long time before Funimation licensed them, and by the time they did, I knew better than to watch DBZ dubbed.

Because it still was the same company, why was their approach to handling the movies so far removed from their older philosophy of them being uncut and accurate?

You mean FUNimation? I dunno. I mean, I guess it's the same reason why their current TV efforts (the first two seasons) were so different from those movies. And I don't know what that is either, other than guessing Pioneer convinced them to go more for the hardcore anime home video market (which would make some sense considering those were also the only subtitled releases at the time too). By the time they picked up dubbing the movies again, season 3 had been an unmitigated success, so I guess they figured, "Yeah, let's keep going in that direction!"

I saw all of the DBZ movies subbed and uncut before Funi dub them. I do remember being kinda mad at the Movie 4 dub for screwing up things.

The first three movies weren't their doing. Like Vegetto EX mentioned about the Ocean dub of the Androids arc onwards -with AB Groupe holding the supervisory position while a company with a sub-license did the actual work- Funimation sub-licensed those three movies to Geneon (their DVD distributor before they went all in-house) who tend to produce much more faithful dubs Funimation at the time.

I guess I should mention that Funimation DID dub the THIRD movie back before the Geneon dubs. Isn't it on the Rock the Dragon set? I thought I remember reading they had the Geneon dubs of Movie One and Movie Two, and then the FUNi dub of Movie Three.

So it was Pioneer/Geneon that had the final say then? I mean, are you saying Pioneer contracted FUNimation to provide a dub for these movies? To me, this is kind of weird and confusing since it was FUNimation who had the rights to Dragonball including distribution rights. So, with that said, how could Pioneer influence FUNimation then?

Yeah basically Ocean never dubbed them initially because of the voice switch in the series to Funi's inhouse cast. Then they potentially had another chance to be dubbed by Ocean later on when AB Groupe had the Westwood dub of the Android-Kid Buu sagas made. But instead of that they chose to make a dub even cheaper than the already cheap Westwood and Blue Water dubs which turned out to be the infamous Big Green dub.

AB Groupe basically screwed the franchise up in the UK completely with increasingly poor dubs, a lack of merchandise and toys that were irrelevant(We had toys of movie villains and Buu saga characters that hadn't aired in the UK at the time). And it's because of AB that the English versions of the videogames could never use Kikuchi's music as they held the rights to that music in Europe and they would charge a ridiculous amount for it to be licenced. AB are truly the anti-christ of the DB franchise.

And then lists people in charge as people from Geneon...

AB Groupe had the rights to the Big Green versions, right? I'm pretty sure they aired those, which is most likely because it had the original music and not the music that they would have to pay Funimation to use.

This is a supposition, but the most likely reason AB Groupe made the alternate dub in the first place was likely because of the music royalties that Funimation gained from their own music. AB Groupe probably felt they could've gotten a bigger chunk of money, so they made their own version with their own score.

Fansub VHS tapes were pretty cheap and I didn't have a job, either. These fansubbers weren't' doing it for the money. They were doing it for their over inflated self-importance. I mean, passion for the show!
