I agree with hleV, because what he's saying goes in line with Goku's life goal which is to become as strong as possible. So with that in mind he would want to try out fusion with someone who could give him the best possible results... Which was no one in the afterlife.

That would make sense if fusion was permanent. But it isn't. It lasts half an hour. Goku would get to try it, see if he has mastered it and what it feels like. And in the future, if some other guy closer to his level reached the afterlife he could try with him. There's really no reason not to try it.

If Battle of Gods told us anything, Goku doesn't necessarily like having to borrow or share power when he doesn't have to.

It would've been enough for the Metamorians to just tell Goku that he learned the technique by seeing him do the dance correctly. So yes, it's indeed a baseless assumption that Goku would definitely try Fusion in the afterlife had he been able to.
