The difference from Kuririn to Krillin isn't near as large as the one from H*rcule to Mr. Satan.

true. I won't claim H*rcule is an accurate translation. I do however think it's a woolseyism. An innaccurate Translation that preserves the spirit. Like Translating Kintama into Family Jewels. It's inaccurate, but it preserves the spirit.

I'll also add that if it was filtered to his actual name, i wouldn't have a problem. But it's not filtered to his actual name, so i do

The name filter makes no sense and anything possibly useful from its use is overwhelmed by the negatives from its use. People can't even talk about different Dub names without it bothering them and it frequently generates confusion in topics. Also, why shouldn't a fan be allowed to freely used the spelling or Dub name he wants for a character? This is an international forum after all, I believe.

Not to mention that this is the only forum I use that uses long-lasting names filters for serious use... which I don't believe is a positive thing at all.

I agree, It's kinda odd. I never understood the dub filter either. It seems to be a Dragon Ball fandom thing only. I mean, nobody questions the fact that Satoshi is called Ash in English.

It's like an One Piece forum having a name filter to change "Zolo" into something else, despite being an official translation, for example.

Pokemon is kind of a different beast entirely, since 99% of the character names are completely different between English and Japanese. And I can say from experience that there is a sect of the English Pokemon fandom that uses "Satoshi" and other Japanese names, usually because they watch the anime in Japanese.

Kanzenshuu originally started out as a community of people who mostly watched Dragon Ball in Japanese. But obviously a lot has changed in the 11 years since the forum installation was first created. I've previously stated that I'm not fond of the filters anymore. And I think the admins do plan to remove it at some point.

I don't think the filters here were ever meant seriously either. I mean, changing "Her'cule" to "Hercule" rather than simply "Mister Satan" is obviously a joke. Arguably it's not terribly funny and causes more trouble than it's worth, but it wasn't designed as anything serious.

Translating Kintama as "family jewels" is accurate though; both mean testicles. It's not some super-mega-as-literal-as-humanly-possible translation, but there's no sense in which it's inaccurate. I halfway understand the point you're getting at, but that's really not the right example to use.

True. It was just the only example similar that I had.

If it was a joke, it would be something temporary. I've seen some other forums do that, change a word for a few days or weeks. Now, that's funny, there's a few laughs, and then everything goes back to normal. There's nothing funny about it in this forum because it doesn't seem to be temporary.

Well, I just slogged through this thread, and while I was more or less indifferent to the reasoning behind the filter before, I see where it's coming from now. I see no problem with it.

I support the name filter. I wonder why Bulla isn't filtered to Bra?
