Of course we now know the real story and it's all thanks to DB Minus. So, why are people so mad if it doesn't affect the manga?Rocketman wrote:We already knew the real story. - doesn't affect the manga any more than bog or faff does.fexus wrote:But he himself doesn't know that. Re: Poll: What's worse, EoB or DB Minus?
It was a joke.
Being ostracized for his inferior strength and, as a result, purposely sent to a weak planet, yet growing up to become one of the absolute strongest beings in the entire universe, partly because of the skills he learned and people he met on Earth, is deliciously ironic. Changing this into a sappy story about how mummy and dada wanted to protect him buries all of that to the ground.

He is inferior in strength. That doesn't change. Getting sent to a weak planet Earth doesn't change. Getting ridiculed because of his lower status doesn't change. Getting stronger partly because of the skills he learned doesn't change. Proving that he can still be strong on Earth doesn't change. The irony never changed. The only thing that change is that he got sent because of his parents and even that is only known to his parents. Still not seeing a problem.fadeddreams5 wrote:It was a joke.

I thought the irony was that people underestimated him because he is a low level saiyan sent to a low level planet but he still manage to beat them. The point is that he was sent to a low level planet to destroy it because he was a low level saiyan (and a baby to boot)... but it's changed to him being sent cuz his parents wuved him. That really throws the entire "low-level reject" aspect of the dramatic irony into the air.fexus wrote: I thought the irony was that people underestimated him because he is a low level saiyan sent to a low level planet but he still manage to beat them. That's one of my biggest issues with Minus. That was a truly great aspect, that Goku was sent to destroy Earth, but instead ended up its protector, and now he's a Superman rip-off.fadeddreams5 wrote:> Sent to conquer Earth because it's a weak planet and he's a low level saiyan.

Re: Poll: What's worse, EoB or DB Minus?
Again what do you mean it throws the entire "low-level reject" aspect of the dramatic irony into the air? As I said again and again, he is still a "low-level reject". People still underestimate him because he was sent to earth. That didn't and wouldn't change. There is still irony in the way they treat him. You guys are really going hysterical over nothing. I think you guys are really trying to push your opinion as fact. You know what, I'm glad they change it like this. It rejects the notion that all Saiyans are the same war mongering dumdum that people are expecting. Instead they manage to add more character to the one dimensional badass Bardock.DBZAOTA482 wrote:The point is that he was sent to a low level planet to destroy it because he was a low level saiyan (and a baby to boot)... but it's changed to him being sent cuz his parents wuved him. They didn't add any depth to Bardock. They made him even more generic. TV Special Bardock was a complex character, Minus Bardock is not.
You still don't get it, do you? The point is that he was a REJECT. It made Goku a much more tragic figure.

To ask what's worse is implying that both are bad to begin with, which I don't think they are. Besides, I don't believe they are even comparable.
Although I'll say that Minus was disappointing and uneventful.

Re: Poll: What's worse, EoB or DB Minus?
Toriyama probably didn't put as much thought in it as you guys. It's easy to brush off some details because the minus manga is just a sidenote anyway. The main point behind it was introducing Gine with her Meatstick clobbering skills.
Besides Goku probably was already planned to go to a week planet, Bardock just stole a pod to make sure it happened a little sooner.

Oh and this is based on what? Your opinion. To me TV special Badrock is the generic one. He didn't have any character in him. He is just a thing that kept the story going which in itself is pretty boring.Doctor. wrote:They didn't add any depth to Bardock. They made him even more generic. And he is still a reject. Looks like you're the one who doesn't get it. You know what the story in Minus is much more logical if you think about what happen. He was safe because his father felt the danger that's coming. In the TV special what happened? It was all a coincidence.

Re: Poll: What's worse, EoB or DB Minus?
Yes, the irony changed. Goku was sent to Earth to destroy it and ended up being its greatest champion and savior, which is pretty much an anti-Superman story and immensely ironic. With minus, Goku is sent to Earth mostly so that he can be safe and escape a possible terrible fate, which is no longer an anti-Superman story, it's actually the Superman story, and a great deal of irony is lost due to that. That's just lame...fexus wrote: He is inferior in strength. That doesn't change. Getting sent to a weak planet Earth doesn't change. Getting ridiculed because of his lower status doesn't change. Of course it's an opinion, why do people have the need to say "that's you opinion, man" whenever someone else disagrees with them? "In my opinion" is always implicit in every post regarding literature, nobody's view on a certain subject is objective.fexus wrote:Oh and this is based on what? Your opinion. He's not a reject. His parents loved them. He's a reject for other Saiyans, but not to his parents, which was what made Goku a tragic figure. Instead of coming to Earth because he was weak and nobody cared for him at all, he comes to Earth because his parents want to spare him, and only him, of the fate they're gonna suffer, how cute and cuddly.

Re: Poll: What's worse, EoB or DB Minus?
If I were to take a neutral stance on Dragon Ball Minus, on one hand I would say that it is certainly more logical and makes a whole lot more sense from an in-universe perspective than the TV special. And on the other hand, well, Gaffer Tape explained everything that was wrong with Dragon Ball Minus pretty damn well.

Re: Poll: What's worse, EoB or DB Minus?
Now we're going to this Superman nonsense. If you think that making it an anti-Superman story would make it good, that's just your opinion. A show like Dragon Ball can in fact stand on its own without having to be an antithesis of the Superman story or origin. Just because he has an origin story almost the same as Superman doesn't make the story bad. And there's a lot of irony in this story. Making one specific irony obsolete doesn't suddenly make the Minus lame.rereboy wrote:Yes, the irony changed. So, you just read "Superman" and ignored the point of my post? Being an anti-Superman story or not wasn't actually the point, you know? As I told you, since Goku was not sent to destroy Earth, but to be safe, irony is lost. That was the point.fexus wrote: Now we're going to this Superman nonsense. And, yes, it makes Goku's story much lamer and that's my opinion. Like you have just been told, that is obvious and people don't need to be stating "imo" all the time.
Or maybe you should realize that people shouldn't have to add "imo" at the end of all of their sentences for you to understand that they are talking about subjective things?fexus wrote: If it's an opinion make it look like an opinion. I read all of the post and again there's a lot of irony in Dragon Ball losing one when there are people that never made the connection in the first place and thinking it became lame because of that is pretty horrid.
