Re: Why is Broly so over-hyped?
Honestly all of these explanations makes sense to me and it completely changes the first film for me now.
What I always found interesting is that Broly never killed his father. He's supposed to be a super maniac but he has calm moments. Something about his calmness when awoken by his father. It wasn't like "why the fuck did you wake me up?!"
I've always liked Broly because he's always been portrayed as the "true" Super Saiyan. When he transforms it's a almost painful transformation. The sky actually turns a different color, lights shoot out of his eyes and mouth, meanwhile his skin actually rips apart with an explosion surrounding him. It's a pretty badass transformation. Unlike the other villains, the Z-Fighters couldn't put a single dent in him. The closest they got was when Goku kneed him in the chin. My guess is that turning Super Saiyan is possible for all Saiyans, however Legendary Super Saiyan is the "true" form.
I think the reason why he hates Goku is because he's associated Goku's crying with the stabbing.
I've always liked his LSS form. Though I wish we could see him achieve "standard" Super Saiyan 3. Cooler might be the second most popular movie villain, hence 2 films. However Broly got 3, though Bio-Broly sucked big time. It's a shame, a clone of Broly would be an interesting ally to have if he was good.

Broly did kill his father. The only reason Paragus was relatively safe up to that point was because he kept Broly under his control with that tiara thing.Bacon Skittles wrote:Honestly all of these explanations makes sense to me and it completely changes the first film for me now.

Re: Why is Broly so over-hyped?
Broly was basically the DBZ equivalent to Venom: the bigger, stronger, faster, tougher, nastier/cooler looking evil counterpart of the hero with the psychotic laugh, the meme-worthy lines, impressive feats and high spots, and strong booking that got him over many impressionable fans.
Re: Why is Broly so over-hyped?
Broly's first fight was so one-sided it was hilarious. The beat down he gave the Saiyans + Piccolo was something that me and my cousin watched repeatedly, both dubs, both subtitles, in slow motion, at chipmunk voice speed (my favorite)...it was entertaining.
With the power of the rewind button, we discovered that I had somewhat more accurate recollections of the things we watched. The thing about that was what my cousin did misremember was that it was more fun than what actually happened. I think most people are like that and just about willfully forget simple actuality in favor of more pleasing constructs.
As for downplaying the achievements of other characters in favor of making Broly look good, trampled toes be damned, the human brain just seems to work mostly on comparisons. Everything has be be compared. Post-game riots and console wars would not be a thing if we were not programmed to make one thing the measuring stick of another. So many reviews are "x meets y" or "x is a better/worse y". Combine that with not wanting to be wrong and Broly-boasters are that much more obnoxious and willing to post redundantly.
Broly is so over-hyped because he makes an incredible impression, people would rather not bore themselves with facts or details, and expressing any favor for anything is bound to spark a competition that will eventually get out of hand. If not for that, he would just be regular-hyped, as seems to be the whole point of his movies.
What's more hyped than a literal legend?

That which is, is bound to be
That which is not, may never be
In this sense, no things are free
Wether they may or may not be

I would also like to add to the 'he leaves an incredible impression.' bit, if you look at all 3 movies, Broly hasn't been bested once in 1v1 combat. It always takes a group effort to dispatch him. This combined with his pretty terrifying demeanor and stature really do make him leave a large impression on people.Gorrilian wrote:Broly's first fight was so one-sided it was hilarious. Going on hiatus. Too much stuff in RL to deal with for me to keep up with posts here for now. Was fun, hope you all have a nice day and future! Volt signing off.

Mainly the West's admiration of toughness and the age old stereotype that gruff = tough. If you showed someone a picture of Doomsday and then a picture of The Phantom Stranger and asked "who's stronger?" Most would probably pick DS. A good example would be Street Fighter. Akuma/Gouki is generally thought to be the strongest even though it's implied Oro is stronger.

Re: Why is Broly so over-hyped?
I really like Broly but not for the same reason as most of his fans. I'll admit that it was pretty fun watching a powerhouse beat the tar out of the others and watching Vageta carping his pants. However, I think Broly has the potential to be an interesting character. Clearly the guy has got some serious depression issues and Goku drove him insane as a baby, giving him childhood PTSD (and that's not even mentioning the fact that he was stabbed and left to die). DBAF seemed to be doing a good job at taking his characters into a good direction before it was abandon.
Also, I thought Broly was the legendary SS due to the fact that his power could keep rising infinity without changing forms or anything?
