References to Dragonball Z in other shows?

I don't know if this counts or not, but in the Drum Island arc when Chopper is in his first fight, he enters "Brain Point". In this point he makes a pose by putting his two front hoves together and looking through the gap it makes. The point of this technique is for him to find his opponent's weak spot but in the fan sub Luffy keeps screaming out something along the lines of:
"HE'S GOING TO SHOOT A BEAM!"
After that I by chance saw that seen in a scalation, and in it Luffy mentions something along the lines of:
"He's going to shoot a beam like Ultraman", suggest that's the angle Oda was aiming for (assuming it's true. I can't read Japanese and haven't read the original version). However when I saw it in the subbed ep I couldn't help but think DBZ, and we all know how much Oda loves DB.

Don't you mean the 42 volume Dragon Ball Manga? Same I suppose that's if he ever watched the DBZ anime, but from what I'm understanding he very much adores the Dragon Ball Manga (and it's artwork) by Toriyama (though I could be wrong). I'll just leave it as my opinion as to not start getting off topic or to mean any unintentional harm. DB? DBZ? DBGT?! Meh, same thing.Caracal wrote: We all know how much Oda loves DBZ.
But since we are talking about DBZ references in One Piece. There was this one episode of One Piece when one of the Priests in Skypiea (I can't remember his name) that Luffy, Sanji, & Usopp were fighting. He summoned a "Ball Dragon". I'm left under the impression that Oda was making somewhat of a clever reference to Dragon Ball.

Yeah that was the same interview I read too, it's like all over the internet. Oh by the way, Skypedia's awesomeCaracal wrote:You're completly right. I've just fixed my post. And I once read a joint interview between Oda and Akira, and Oda was partically worshiped Akira. It's in the first colour book which Viz has released.
Anyway I can't say I've seen Skypedia so I can't comment on that.

Now back to the topic, I know this is an Obvious One Piece DB Reference (& I believe it came out on one the US Shonen Jumps & The Color Walk), it was a title cover where you see the main One Piece Characters in chinese clothing & Luffy's holding a Noyibo, which I thought was awesome.
Let's see...then there is Boken Oh Beeto(u?)!! (Translated as Adventure King Beet!! or as we know it otherwise as Beet the Vandel Buster), there's not much of a reference, but Belltoze (Beltorze, as they call him in romanized Japanese & suprisingly, in the Viz version of the manga...which is cool) looks like a Omega Shenlong (or, correctly, Yi Xing Long, I believe) copy. It's like the manga artist just took his design & smackdabbed it as the main villain. Oh well, I guess it made sense that Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru was one of the character designers for the TV series

It's called Abra-Catastrophe.Steven Perry wrote:What's the name of this film? Are there any screenshots? I'm building up my "References to Dragonball Z" folder. Gettin' pretty BIG!cheesedoodlez wrote:In addition to that for a brief second during the beginning of this fight in the crowd you can see what looks like Roshi, Oolong, Puar cheering on.Azure wrote:There's a fairly odd parents ( film length) where Timmy gets sucked into the T.V, the last stage he ends up in a Boudokai like arena where he fights Vicky
And one DB reference that I noticed immediately when I was it was an image of Snowstorm (Snowcat) and Irontread (Demolishor) doing a fusion in Transformers: Superlink (Energon). I submitted that to DB in the world on Dragon Ball Arena, so check there for more concise details.

P.S. On the subject of the "Jap" thing, here is the single most offensive use of the term:

Okay, I think I've found something. I came across this in a magazine (as an advert), but don't have a scanner. The product is called "Manga putty", and you can spike your hair up. The person wearing it looks similar to Goku... He was wearing his arm bands and all. So, I had a look for the website... http://www2.garnierbeautybar.co.uk/manga/index.asp
Click on "Manga Rul' Z"
The 7 floating balls (with stars) aren't a coincidence, are they?

Actually I view that as being more of a nod to "Journey to the West" rather than DragonBall. Although I know little about JttW the image strikes me as having more in common with it.Sebastian (SB) wrote:Now back to the topic, I know this is an Obvious One Piece DB Reference (& I believe it came out on one the US Shonen Jumps & The Color Walk), it was a title cover where you see the main One Piece Characters in chinese clothing & Luffy's holding a Noyibo, which I thought was awesome.
Anybody ever heard of a chinese show called ' My Date With A Vampire ' ? It's a live action series that had spawned two sequels, and number 2 featured a load of battles that were just like Dragon Ball Z. You see them flying around the city of Hong Kong and kicking eachother through buildings and such. There were also characters that transformed. The main character would get green eyes, and his hair turned white, and his face imprinted with strange markings. Unfortunately, the show was made back in 2000, and the visual effects back in those days in Hong Kong are not as good as you'd want them to be.
Try searching the series up in youtube, and possibly you will find a clip of a battle scene?

Cool! I found something today! When I was watching Megas XLR on Toonami, I noticed this monster doing a spirit bomb/ final flash attack. I managed to find the episode on Youtube.

Oh yeah, and Megas XLR is the funniest crap ever.

Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo has a good amount of DBZ references, though the references are oddly different from the ones in the manga. I'll post some scans of manga references later, but I don't have any pictures of the references in the anime.
In the anime, there was a trio of characters who, while they were cast in shadow, looked like Freeza in his chair with his two lackies, Zarbon and Dodoria. Out of the shadow though, its this cute creature thing (was it a mouse?) in a floating chair, with a girl as Zarbon and a guy-looking thing as Dodoria.
Also, recently (like, last week's episode), the character "Rice" (yes, that's his name) just suddenly did the second pose of the fusion dance. I was like,
wow! It was just completely random, just as everything in Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo is.

Once I was reading a chapter of Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo in Shonen Jump and Bo was holding this painting with Krillin, Piccolo and Goku but Goku's head was cut off and Bo put his head in that spot putting his hands in the position of doing a Kamahama-ha.veshira wrote:Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo has a good amount of DBZ references, though the references are oddly different from the ones in the manga. And then he screamed, "Vegeta!" and fell off a train. Yeah, I have that.GokuSoul wrote:Once I was reading a chapter of Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo in Shonen Jump and Bo was holding this painting with Krillin, Piccolo and Goku but Goku's head was cut off and Bo put his head in that spot putting his hands in the position of doing a Kamahama-ha.

And what's even better about this special was that DBZ was acurately parodied. What I mean is it just kinda captures the essence of the show, which makes this special even funnier. Some of the screenshots are practically copied right out of the manga, like when Vicky (in a Piccolo outfit) begins to "power up" with the lightning bolts in the backgorund. Ah, that Butch Hartman...The Lecherous Muten Roshi wrote:Whoops. You're right.
