Yeah but what do you think about the fact you can't (really) see it in theaters anymore?Dreamworks is alright, though I prefer normal animation,
I think they were getting a little too repeatitive with their 2D stuff though, and liked the fact that they really began experimenting with 3D fighters in the late 90s and early turn of the century. Stuff like Power Stone, Spawn, Heavy Metal, Rival Schools 2/Project Justice, Tech Romancer, Plasma Sword, etc, etc. Notably with Power Stone and Spawn as they were very diffrient from the norm, and really showed that not every fighting game has to have a horizontal perspective, or that you could developer fighters with more of a fun factor in mind rather then technical aspects (balance, etc)and Capcom does some good stuff, though I prefer all their older arcade games anyways.
But note The Spirits Within was made from scratch, and was the best computer technology could produce in terms of graphics at that time, and now that technology or engine (to my knowledge) goes completely wasted. The Final Fantasy movies were good, but as you said, hyper realism.
Well what I want or my design is from scratch too, but I'd try to get as much out of it as possible after "done" (and I say it like that because I don't think I'd ever look at it as being completely done) because it just seems like a big waste. When it's created from scratch, I can kind of tell and feel it, and I generally have more appreciation for the artwork.
I mean there's a diffrience to me between reusing and recycling. For instance Pedro brought up the situation with Morrigan's sprite. Now that's something that either needs to be tossed out entirely, because of how outdated or unfitting it is, or it needs to be touched up. When I say touched I mean they'd need to go back into the old sprite sheets and add more details, more frames, better coloring, etc, etc. I've actually seen people do some really amazing sprite edits with that old crappy sprite to the point where it actually looks new, and this is just one example of recycling (using the exact samething again) vs reusing or updating.
It's like the way I look at it is that if more companies upgraded/updated games/engines from time to time (more specificly with series) we'd get better games every once and awhile, rather then doing everything from scratch as much as possible and ending up with half assed results. Like look at the Resident Evil series. Capcom did 1-3, Survivor, and the original (N64) version of Zero on the same engine, with various upgrades of course, before moving onto the REmake engine that they used for the GC versions of RE and RE0, though I'm not sure if RE4's engine is completely from scratch or an upgraded REmake engine. I mean to me to me that's a great example of how to do things, and as you can see it worked out very well for them.
Also I wonder would you be able to tell the diffrience between a engine from scratch and a upgraded one unless specificly told? Like you say you apprecieate things made completely from scratch more, but how do you know what is or isn't?
