New Special: Canon or Not?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

Easy. This special was made to generate feelings of nostalgia. It works because we know the characters and they are, for the most part, the way we remember them.

The live-action film, on the other hand, is trying to make it's own continuity. It doesn't have a past to play off of, it's a new work. Like many live-action adaptations of video games and anime, it's looking to go off the beaten path by quite a bit and we're mostly very much pessimistic. So far, Fox hasn't really shown us anything that screams "DragonBall" to many fans.

That's another discussion for another thread though.

I feel the series has been slipping further and further into mediocrity with each new addition to the "canon," this new special was no different. It's like it didn't even try to have a plot.

I just strongly feel Freeza was the time to end the show.

I don't know what people have against Vegeta having a brother. It's very cute and seriously. Very Toriyama. To me, anything Toriyama comes up with is canon. In my eyes, Yamcha playing Baseball to make money is canon.

Agreed. This Special is not intended for the common fan...Namely the common American fan who thinks "ZOMGZ DBZHARDCOREACTIONTEHR0KZ0RZBRUCEFAULCONER!1!1!1!1"

It's for people to enjoy a feel of the old days (Pre-Piccolo Daimao) with the end of Z Cast.

Alright, well I guess all I can say is it didn't appeal to me. I had fun watching it almost entirely because of the animation. The animation was great. Everything else, unfortunately, was below average. I wouldn't go so far as to say it was as bad as an episode of Dragonball GT, but close.

1. It smacks of retarded fanfiction.

2. "There are no other Saiyans!"

... Unless there's something y'all aren't telling me, we have waaay different definitions of 'fanservice'.

Seriously though, it doesn't matter whether anyone wants to accept this as cannon or not, as it is purely fan service created by the man himself, Akira Toriyama.

I think that may be why I enjoyed this angle so much. It takes all of those stupid "Vegeta's sister" mary-sues and just throws it back in your face in a veritable feast of delicious irony.

1. Hello. I'm Raditz. You're big brother. And your from an extinct alien race of space pirates.

2. It would seem that Tarble was basically sent off to pretty much die. Being exempt from the Saiya-jin race.

Some people mistakenly think it only pertains to things of a sexual nature, but fan service is basically anything added or made solely to please fans.

I think people take things a little too seriously, if you're going to complain about this in terms of canon, you're also going to have to complain about all of the movies.

It was a fun little throwaway special with some cute ideas, nothing more.

1. I can't believe it, but Radditz was actually more convincing than Vegeta's brother. And he actually had more than 3-4 lines of dialogue. Plus, it didn't come completely out of the blue, because during DragonBall everyone knew Goku wasn't normal.

2. Akira royally screwed up the whole "legendary super saiyan" thing. Once every 1000 years my ass. He also screwed up the "Only 4 saiyans survived" thing.

It is definitely not a "throw-away special." It's the ultimate fan orgasm that deserves multiple viewings.

1. And Vegeta's normal?...At this point we know wacky things happen. Toriyama likes to pull things out of the blue. It's his style.

2. What does that have to do with what I said? =/

Well I'm glad you enjoyed it, Gozar, I just wish the special made sense on some level.

Just because it drew stuff out of the air doesn't mean it didn't make sense. As I said, it's very Toriyama. This screams his style.

The vast majority of the DragonBall movies must have confused the hell out of you, then :P

And for all the people shouting "Vegeta said there were no other Saiyajin!", did Tullece, Broli and Paragus make your heads explode or what? :P

I don't see the movies as canon.

And I'm not a fan of them either.

...so, wait...

You don't like the DragonBall movies because they stray too far from the original series.

...am I the only one seeing the irony here?
