I don't find it weird that Goku is smiling. Even if he's about to get his butt handed to him, Goku would love the challenge of it all, especially if he thinks that this is just a fun fight instead of a threat to the world.

I'm happy that it's kind of sounding like the others may very well get a chance to actually fight instead of just getting smacked around as filler time until Goku...shows up...wait, crap. That DOES kinda sound like what's happening...I hope Toriyama and the new director are able to make it more exciting than that though.

Also, quick question for Herms or anyone else who can vouch for the accuracy - I was reading through the tail end of the last volume of the manga last night, and I got to the dialogue between Goku and Bulma when they meet up just after the ten year timeskip. Bulma accosts Goku for not meeting up with everyone, and Goku says something along the lines of 'Hey, we just met up five years ago.' like that's no big deal. Is it having been five years since Goku has seen everyone sound about accurate? If so, I'm really sad that this movie went with the Bulma's wedding thing instead of the Gohan/Videl wedding option, because FIVE years would be exactly around the time of Pan's conception based on my guesses. So they really did miss a big option of tying things together here.

Bulma accosts Goku for not meeting up with everyone, and Goku says something along the lines of 'Hey, we just met up five years ago.' like that's no big deal. Is it having been five years since Goku has seen everyone sound about accurate?

Ah yes, that bit...that conversation's kinda weird in Japanese. Goku says they "just" met up 5 years ago, and Bulma basically says 5 years is a long time and that even then, despite everyone getting together Goku didn't come because he was training. So...did Goku come or not? If not, why'd he bring it up? Did he remember that had been a get-together back then but forget that he didn't attend? Did he not come at first but was eventually forced into it or something? The Funi subtitles have it this way too, but Viz has something about Goku stopping by in between training trips. No matter how I look at the Japanese dialogue I can't see that interpretation, so I think Viz was just changing the dialogue into something that made more sense than the original.

Ahh, okay. That really does sound weird then, because why in the world would Goku even think to bring up the last meeting if he didn't attend it? And yeah, it was something about him visiting everyone between training trips. Hmm...I honestly can't say I blame Viz too much for changing things a little bit, to make it make more sense. I'm against the change just from the standpoint of it being a change, but hey, if it helped...

I still think this is a huge missed opportunity on the writer's parts, but I'm still curious to see where the movie goes with it's party parts.

Maybe he's smiling, maybe he's not. People will interpret it differently until we get a better shot of Goku's face there, if we do at all.

I remember the scan with that screenshot from the magazine that Kei posted on twitter had a higher resolution. It still had regular magazine grain though, but from what I could tell from it, Goku wasn't smiling. His mouth was open in an O and it looked like he was more confused than anything else.

I wouldn't be surprised if he was smiling at some point in that match though, challenging fights like that are right up his alley.

It's really hard to tell, but I think he's not smiling, although I wouldn't be surprised if he is
It can look like he's smiling because of the wrinkle around the mouth Toriyama draws sometimes, I think, like so..


So, since the image is so small, it sorta looks like his mouth joins the wrinkle, making it look like a smile when you zoom-in.

Actually, this movie shouldn't be the last time they meet up, 5 years before the End of Z, otherwise Bulma should be round and pregnant ready to give birth to Bra, or already with infant Bra in arms. I do believe this could be just before that: 4 years after Buu, 6 years before the End of Z. This is why I'm crossing fingers that Bulma is going to give Vegeta the news that they'll have a new bundle of joy during the party + Videl/Gohan announce they are getting married.

Yeah, they could still tie it all together right if they really wanted to I suppose. I'm hoping they do, because there's actually a lot in this ten year time span, that they need to have right if they want it to fit as seamlessly as they're proposing it to fit.
