Something that shows how powerful he is but keeps the mystery around.
Yes, that would be the best for Whis, because we have not really seen a true deus-ex-machina moment in DBZ, maybe the appearance of Old Kai can be counted as one, but he really was only useful to unlock Gohan's Ultimate/Mystic power.

He's probably referring to the Bardock special. Zarbon was the one who first recommended destroying Planet Vegeta because the saiyans were rapidly growing in strength.
It was actually Beerus disguised as Zarbon #StayWoke
Herms wrote:The fact that the ridiculous power inflation is presented so earnestly makes me just roll my eyes and snicker. Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

I'm beginning to hear rumors that this movie was cancelled. I doubt the rumor to be true but that's a scary thought.

Hardly. The movie is costing a drop in a bucket to produce and is from a franchise that produced cheap, undying trash like Dragon Ball Kai. It's not going to be canceled.

Why would it be cancelled? The movie already finish the voice acting and they already plan to market the movie. I would imagine Toei is almost close to finish animating the movie soon. There's still lot to be done before April.

Do we have actual confirmation that it has been voiced? It's possible that the performances in the trailer are simply for the trailer.

Even if they couldn't secure enough animators to complete the film on schedule, the absolute worst that I could imagine happening would be a nominal delay. I doubt this would really happen.

Oh, it wouldn't miss the release date. They'd just have shitty animators scribble out their cuts quickly and if we're lucky keep the genga long enough to make corrections for the home video.

This is kind of a weird to thing to say, but I get the feeling that this movie is going to really surprise us, in a similar way to how BOG did.

Everything about it just seems too generic right now; bringing back an old villain, new transformation, lots of fighting, etc. I'm expecting a big twist from Toriyama that really defies everyone's expectations. It's still early days, but I'm looking forward to seeing what they have in-store for us in the new year.

I agree, and hope that we're right. This could be very good, or another generic movie similar to the first 13.
Torishima's praise is keeping me hopeful.

No doubt the script will be lovely. I expect Nakao will have the most fun he has had in twenty years. Yamadera and the other actors will have a blast, too. The other hundreds of component to the film, however, are a crapshoot. A terrible, terrible crapshoot.

I'm all for this. The Z-era is basically built around assumptions of power with few actual feats of strength to back them, there's no way out of it at this point. To let Whis deliberately keep that going as a running gag is fine by me. What would Whis really give us? Dragon Ball characters have not fought relative to how strong we're supposed to believe they actually are since the Cell arc at the very least.

This too. This movie is a fanfiction story, but Battle of Gods, on its barest details, was only so much better, really. If we really are back to truly disposable movies, I'd rather let the proof be in the pudding; it would not exactly be new, nor surprising if Battle of Gods was a one hit wonder.

I'm holding out hope on that Torishima approval for now. That and Toriyama's enjoyment with messing with popular fan expectations. Both those things make me feel this movie's story will be more entertaining than the unfinished trailer leads one to believe.

Also, Jump Festa partly-DB panel is this coming weekend. In my NJ timezone that's 2:40am to 3:20am Saturday morning. My hopes for interesting info coming out of that panel are tremendously high. *_*

And not to forget, but VJump comes out this week, and depending on how big the news that's inside it is, we could potentially see stuff as early as tomorrow morning (though I don't expect it until probably Wednesday or Thursday).
On hiatus.

This movie cancelled? I don't see it... with the money already spent on it and it being so close to release...just can't see it.

Not to mention it is a 100% money maker for TOEI.

So close but yet so far! If someone comes out tomorrow I would be so happy haha. Really wanna know if Goten and Trunks are a bit older or still young. It would be pretty cool to see a teenage Trunks again.

I also really hope to see teenage Trunks (and Goten). I partly think that may be why we haven't seem then yet. Shueisha wants their teenage selves to be a surprise (possibly).

Yeah, it allowed Goku to beat up Majin Buu and placate him into waiting around for a strong fighter long enough for Toriyama to make up/flesh out the fusion narrative.
Than you can call it deus-ex-machina if Goku surprised us with SSJ2? The intervention of Whis might be a the only one by me.

Every SSJ form is a deus-ex-machina especially SSJ2 in the Cell games.

I agree, sorta. But those are true deus-ex-machina category? I think not. Everytime they made it for Goku, Gohan, or Vegeta. But now should be a potential for Whis to show something on his own, the Gods were mocked in the franchise, I hope Whis will show something at least.
