I agree with you. I always thought this was the general consensus. But while I'm glad it came out I wouldn't mind it if we got a new translation/kanzenban release. :P
If only it were profitable. :(

That odd speech pattern was only in DBZ Volume 1 and 2.
And in the end of Dragonball (in which I cannot remember the volume number).

It just stands out so much that it's one of the only things that really comes to mind when I think Viz and DBZ.

My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

Yet when Frog did it you all awarded the terrible translation a medal.

I'm just sayin' man. :P

I didn't. Because of things like that, I can never play Chrono Trigger (or Super Mario RPG, or the entire Final Fantasy series) in English again. The name "Ted Woolsey" alone makes lava burst from my skull.

But then I don't read the Viz version of the manga either, nor do I really want to. Though I still recommend it to people, since it's far better than the alternatives if you're not willing to learn another language.

Not even the recent DS version? Or is it some residual, er, Woolseyness that stops you?

I wonder how many people are familiar with the Asterix translations. I always thought they were held up as an example of a translation that went for capturing the spirit rather than the exact words, and did it excellently. It's full of name puns, like DragonBall, but they are usually translated into English, and sometimes even improved. For instance, in French Obelix's dog is called "Idéfix", which roughly means obsession. In English, it becomes "Dogmatix", which captures the original pun and actually improves on it by getting the word "dog" in there. Other times though they completely change names and add jokes, and yet the translation seems to be fairly universally praised. Why? Is it just because the changes were, by and large, funny compared to FUNimation's "punching up"?

I don't mean to sound weeaboo-ish, but it's things like this that make me wish I was Japanese. You know, critically acclaimed games like the Mother series only being released over there, being much more lax about censorship, further improved technology, etc.

I actually like some of the Big Green voices such as King Kai's voice and Broli's voice (when he doesn't go over the top).

From what I've gathered, I would hate that too. Too many references to the old translation, and according to a friend who also knows Japanese, they even changed a couple things that were right in the first place. And even the SNES version didn't translate "Maou" two different ways.

Maybe he should strive to be American instead so he can watch all our sitcoms and reality shows more easily. He'll just have to deal with being obese, uneducated, bigoted, living in constant debt, no affordable health care...

I mean, come on. You just used stereotypes to mock an entire country and another forum member. For no reason.

Fetishizing/glamorizing another country because of their entertainment is a pretty good reason to be made fun of. "I wish everything about my entire life was altered so I could play Earthbound 2: Whiskey Bent" isn't ridiculous?

Rocketman, is it possible for you to take part in a conversation and respond to folks without being a complete asshole beyond all acceptable levels of basic human empathy, compassion, and understanding just once? Just once...? For me? So I don't have to just ban you for good and not be a total hypocrite about saying how we supposedly uphold decent standards of politeness and community around here?

I am so completely over your constant bullshit rudeness that I don't even care about putting it out in the open public as one final ultimatum in this completely unprofessional way.

You have worthwhile things to say that are said in absolutely worthless ways. I'm done. I am so completely done with it.

Depending on which ones you are talking about.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

Yes. In Dragon Ball case, the scanlations avaiable online are far from being accurate.

I second that although I lean more to the latter since Rocketman took it like a little boy being scolded by his mother.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.
