Half of the character could be saved as long as Martsers gets the feel and the personality of Piccolo Daimao right. It seems like he's be made out a lot like Voldermort, but Marsters has said that he knows the character so I'm still giving him some hope.

Then again, Marsters did say that he told his make-up artist how to change a few things so that he actually looked like Piccolo...so I'm not sure what he ment be that. :?

So they officially announced that Weaver is replacing Krillin ? They SAID that or is that just your honest opinion ?
I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.

They don't really need to say it if in the actual story Krillin is Goku's best friend, but in the movie it's someone else. :P

I'm not denying that Tien was an intricate and necessary part of the manga, just that he probably won't be as needed (if needed at all) in this movie, therefore not inclusing him in the movie won't be as much as a loss as not including the parts of the story that he would have been needed in. Whereas in Kuririn's case, if they do make a sequel they will surely feature Goku going Super Saiya-jin; so not having Kuririn will be quite a problem since they will keep the scenes that he was a major part of.

They (Twentieth Century Fox) never said it, it's just that he seems to be replacing Kuririn's role as Goku's handy, little friend.

Kuririn was Goku's best friend in Dragon Ball. Kuririn is not in the movie. Weaver is set as Goku's classmate and friend, in a story where Goku is supposedly an unpopular kid in high school.

Therefore, one does not have to really have to put too much effort into figuring out that no Kuririn + someone else being Goku's best pal = replacement.

There's no sense in trying to justify anything. This movie is VASTLY different from the source material and it's plain as day to see the amount of changes that were made.

Hell, I'm beginning to think we're arguing about Smallville: The Movie or Spider-Man, since this is what this movie's starting to shape up to be.

Oh ok. So I guess Krillin won't be in any sequel and this Weaver guy is going to take his place because he is replacing him. :?

What happened to Teto? I thought he was going to be Goku's best buddy. I swear to god Teto better be in this whole fucking flick or I'm going to help DTX destroy 20th Century FOX!

Seems like it changed to Weaver. That or that was just some name passed around the net. The actor wasn't changed.

Can they really copyright/trademark/whatever "Goku"? He's a character from an old literary work - it'd be like copyrighting "Dracula".

That other Saiyuki manga got away with calling their Sun Wukong character "Son Goku" in it's English translation too.

From what I've heard, they can't copyright "Goku" in and of itself, but if there's a character in another work who acts and/or looks a lot like DB's Goku, and he's named Goku, then it's violating copyright.

I don't know if I care for that change, Teto was a very important name to me, back when I lived near the beach my dads best friend was named Teto, he would always give my sister and I advice about extreame sports. I thought this movie was going to be a very nice nod to him but instead we get this Weaver fellow...well I'm questioning my ticket purchase now.

Has to be a pretty damn identical character, then - I'm free to "create" a monkey-human hybrid character who's super strong and fights with an extending stick and call him Goku as much as I want.

"Action kids in play position, ROCKET POWER!"....

Anyways, I can't help but think this "Teto" character is going to the butt of many jokes here if he is indeed in this movie.

I think that's because that would be a take-off of "Journey to the West", which is in the public domain (AFAIK). You'd have to do something that's a clear swipe from Dragonball's Goku.

Every time I hear "Weaver" and "DragonBall" used together, I keep picturing Sigourney Weaver battling 3rd-form Freeza.

I'm pretty sure a couple people (myself included) have mentioned that possibility; it just got ignored because people can't bitch about it. It's pretty likely too, what with certain comments from Marsters about Piccolo "undergoing some changes" and how much he praised the look of the character. He's a big enough fan so that he wouldn't say that if he was uninformed. When you've been sealed inside a jar for the last couple millennia, it's not exactly gonna be great for your complexion.

Also, to quote someone from another forum who, rather than crying and acting like his life was over right off the bat, decided to take a bit of a closer, more analytical look.
ahem. just to be clear on this. there are only 2 piccolo screenshots, one with pretty bad lighting and one with reddish light. so let's just be cautious while commenting on his color.

so, here are a few considerations... (yes, i've got nothing to do)

This pic had bad lighting and they took the screencap while piccolo was in the wrong position...
Image
this is what it should look like with less light.

now, it seems that he has antennae which he keeps attached to his skull
Image
the too-much-bright-shiny light on his bald pate hides the details.

and here i've taken out the red light and unsticked the antennae from the head
Image
i guess he will stick them to the head while fighting... at least i suppose it works this way.
Hahahahahahahaha!!!!! Oh man it looks like an unripened watermelon had sex with the bad guy from this Island Earth.

Based on the pics I've seen of people adding antennas to Piccolo, I'm kinda glad they didn't add them to the Live Action Piccolo.

I just about pissed myself laughing at that. Thanks for sharing.
It's not like Krillin's being singled out. So far, there's no Upa or Baba or Turtle or Red Ribbon Army or Pilaf or Launch or Tao Pai Pai or Tenshinhan or Bulma's parents either, to name a few.
Apart from Tenshinhan, are you really putting Kuririn on the same level as those characters? Seriously?
